1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 （VD3）, an active form of Vitamin D, is photosynthesized in the skin of vertebrates in response to so.ar ultraviolet B radiation （UV-B）. VD3 deficiency can cause health problems such as immune disease, metabolic disease, and bone diso.ders. It has also.been demonstrated that VD3 is involved in reproductive functions. Female sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are biosynthesized mainly in ovarian granulosa cells as the ovarian follicle develops. The functions of sex hormones include regulation of the estrus cycle and puberty as well as maintenance of pregnancy in females. In this study, we iso.ated granulosa cells from porcine ovaries and cultured them for experiments. To examine the effects of VD3 on ovarian granulosa cells, the mRNA and protein levels of genes were analyzed by Real-time PCR and Western blotting assay. Production of progesterone from granulosa cells was also.measured by ELISA assay. As a result, transcriptional and translational regulation of progesterone biosynthesis-related genes in granulosa cells was significantly altered by VD3. Furthermore, progesterone concen- trations in porcine granulosa cell-cultured media decreased in response to VD3. These results show that VD3 was a strong regulator of sex steroid hormone production in porcine granulosa cells, suggesting that vitamin D deficiency may result in inappropriate sexual development of industrial animals and eventually economic loss.

Objective Multidector computed tomography (MDCT) is now commonly used for the evaluation of coronary artery disease. Because MDCT images include many non-cardiac organs and the patient population evaluated is highly susceptible to extracardiac diseases, this study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of extracardiac findings in the MDCT evaluation of ischemic heart disease. Methods From March 2007 to March 2008, a total of six-hundred twenty patients, who underwent 64-slice MDCT evaluations for chest pain, or dyspnea, were enrolled in this study. Cardiac and non-cardiac findings were comprehensively evaluated by a radiologist. Results Enrolled patients included 306 men (49.4%), with a mean age of 66 years. Significant coronary artery stenosis was found in 41.6%of the patients. A total of 158 extracardiac findings were observed in 110 (17.7%) patients. Commonly involved extracardiac organs were lung (36.7%), hepatobiliary system (21.5%), thyroid (19.6%), kidney (10.8%), spine (9.7%) and breast (0.6%). Of those 110 patients, 50 (45.5%) patients underwent further diagnostic investigations. Malignant disease was detected in three (2.7%) patients (lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer). Conclusions Extracardiac findings are frequently present and should be a concern in the MDCT evaluation of chest pain syndrome.

The exfoliation of bulk graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))into monolayer has been intensively studied to induce maximum sur-face area for fundamental studies,but ended in failure to realize chemi-cally and physically well-defined monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)mostly due to the difficulty in reducing the layer thickness down to an atomic *** has,therefore,remained as a challenging issue in two-dimensional(2D)chemistry and physics *** this study,an“atomic monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)with perfect two-dimensional limit”was successfully prepared by the chemically well-defined two-step *** atomically reso.ved monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)was also.confirmed by spectroscopic and micro-scopic *** addition,the experimental Cs-HRTEM image was collected,for the first time,which was in excellent agreement with the theoretically simulated;the evidence of monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)in the perfect 2D limit becomes now clear from the HRTEM image of orderly hexagonal symmetry with a cavity formed by encirclement of three adjacent heptazine *** to bulk g-C_(3)N_(4),the present g-C_(3)N_(4)monolayer showed significantly higher photocatalytic gen-eration of H2O2 and H2,and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction *** addition,its photocatalytic efficiency for H2O2 production was found to be the best for any known g-C_(3)N_(4)nanomaterials,underscoring the remarkable advantage of monolayer formation in optimizing the catalyst performance of g-C_(3)N_(4).

AIM:To investigate the preoperative factors that can predict neoplastic polypoid lesions of the gallbladder(PLGs) as well as malignant ***:A retrospective analysis was conducted on the 210 consecutively enrolled patients who underwent cholecystectomy due to a PLG larger than 10 mm,as was determined by preoperative trans-abdominal ultraso.ography or endoscopic *** ana-lyzed the medical,laboratory,radiologic data and the pathologic ***:In 210 cases,146 had non-neoplastic polyps(69.5%) and 64 cases were neoplastic polyps(30.5%).An older age(≥ 65 years),the presence of diabetes mellitus(DM) and the size of polyp(≥ 15 mm) were revealed to be independent predictive variables for neoplastic polyps with odd ratios(OR) of 2.27(P = 0.044),2.64(P = 0.021) and 4.94(P so.iated with malignancy with ORs of 4.97(P = 0.005),6.13(P = 0.001) and 20.55(P hose with DM or a large polyp size(≥ 15 mm) should be managed by cholecystectomy.

AIM: We have previously demonstrated that hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is efficiently released into the culture medium in insect cells. The objective of this study is to characterize the HCV core secretion in insect cells. METhoDS: We constructed recombinant baculoviruses expressing various-length of mutant core proteins, expressed these proteins in insect cells, and examined core protein secretion in insect cells. RESULTS: Only wild type core was efficiently released into the culture medium, although the protein expression level of wild type core was lower than those of other mutant core proteins. We found that the shorter form of the core construct expressed the higher level of protein. however, if more than 18 amino acids of the core were truncated at the C-terminus, core proteins were no longer secreted into the culture medium. Membrane flotation data show that the secreted core proteins are asso.iated with the cellular membrane protein, indicating that HCV core is secreted as a membrane complex. CONCLUSION: The C-terminal 18 amino acids of HCV core were crucial for core secretion into the culture media. Since HCV replication occurs on lipid raft membrane structure, these results suggest that HCV may utilize a unique core release mechanism to escape immune surveillance, thereby potentially representing the feature of HCV morphogenesis.

BACKGROUND Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome(PRES)is characterized mainly by occipital and parietal lobe involvement,which can be reversible within a few ***,we report a rare case of PRES that developed after craniotomy for an unruptured intracranial aneurysm(UIA).CASE SUMMARY A 59-year-old man underwent clipping surgery for the treatment of UIA arising from the left middle cerebral *** surgery was performed uneventfully,and he regained consciousness quickly immediately after the *** the 4th hour after surgery,he developed a diso.der of consciousness and *** reso.ance imaging revealed cortical and subcortical T2/FLAIR hyperintensities in the parietal,occipital,and frontal lobes ipsilaterally,without restricted diffusion,consistent with unilateral *** conservative treatment,his symptoms and radiological findings almost completely disappeared within *** our case,the important causative factor of PRES was suspected to be a sudden increase in cerebral perfusion pressure asso.iated with temporary M1 *** Our unique case highlights that,to our knowledge,this is the second report of PRES developing after craniotomy for the treatment of *** must keep PRES in mind as one of the causes of perioperative neurological abnormality following clipping of an UIA.

Subfertility can be caused by acquired or genetic factors. Y chromoso.e microdeletion is one of the genetic factors asso.iating with male infertility.1 Azoospermia factors (AZFa, AZFb and AZFc) have been mapped to different subregions in Yq11.2 so.far, two gene families, RNA-binding motif (RBM) and deleted in azoospermia (DAZ) from interval 6, were proposed as candidate spermatogenesis genes for AZF.3,4 Recent studies demonstrated that microdeletions were detected at a frequency of 5% to 18% in the AZF region of oligospermic and azoospermic men.5-7 With the development of assisted reproductive technologies, particularly intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), these men can now father a child and the genetic abnormalities in defective spermatozoa could be transmitted to future offspring. To examine the possible transmission of the Y-chromoso.e microdeletion to the offspring via ICSI treatment, we performed both cytogenetic and molecular analyses of the Y chromoso.e on both an infertile patient with Y chromoso.e microdeletion and his offspring.

A 55-year-old female was diagnosed with L5-S1 degenerative disc disease(DDD). Initial scores by the visual analogue scale(VAS) were 5(back) and 9(leg) and the Oswestry disability index(ODI) was 32. Arthroplasty was performed. Clinical and radiographic monitoring took place thereafter at one month, three months, six months and annually. At one month, VAS scores were 2(back) and 3(leg), ODI was 12 and ROM was 2.1° by radiographs. At two years, VAS scores were 1(back) and 2(leg), ODI was 6 and ROM was approaching 0. Five years after surgery, the entire operated segment(L5-S1) was so.idly fused. A malpositioned disc implant may impair normal spinal movement, culminating in heterotopic ossification or complete fusion of the operated segment.
