Electrochemically stable lithium-ion and electron insulators(LEIs)for solid-state batteries

Rechargeable solid-state Li metal batteries demand ordered flows of Li-ions and electrons in and out of solid structures,with repeated waxing and waning of Ubcc phase near contact interfaces which gives rise to various electro-chemo-mechanical *** have been approaches that adopt three-dimensional(3D)nanoporous architectures consisting of mixed ion-electron conductors(MIECs)to combat these ***,there has remained an issue of LiBcc nucleation at the interfaces between different solid components(e.g.,solid electrolyte/MlEC interface),which could undermine the interfacial bonding,thereby leading to the evolution of mechanical instability and the loss of ionic/electronic *** this regard,the present work shows that the Li-ion and electron insulators(LEIs)that are thermodynamically stable against LiBcc could combat such challenges by blocking transportation of charge carriers on the interfaces,analogous to dielectric layers in *** searched the ab initio database and have identified 48 crystalline compounds to be LEI candidates(46 experimentally reported compounds and 2 hypothetical compounds predicted to be stable)with a band gap greater than 3 eV and vanishing Li *** these compounds,those with good adhesion to solid electrolyte and mixed ion-electron conductor of interest,but are lithiophobic,are expected to be the most *** also extended the search to Na or K metal compatible alkali-ion and electron insulators,and identified some crystalline compounds with a property to resist corresponding alkali-ions and electrons.

Machine learning of metal-ceramic wettability

The adhesion and wetting between metal and ceramic is a basic problem in materials science and *** example,past materials selection for metal-ceramic composites has relied on random trials and heuristics due to a limited understanding of their adhesion;the large chemical/structural variability that such interfaces can have hinders the identification of the governing *** based on literature data,we have developed a database with~1,000 experimentally measured wetting angles at different temperatures and atmospheric conditions,and come up with a model for the wettability of ionocovalent ceramics(ICs)by metals using a machine learning(ML)*** random forest model uses the testing temperature and~40 features generated based on the chemical compositions of the metal and the ceramic as predictors and exhibits strong predictive power with an R^(2) of~***,this model and the featurization code are integrated into a single computational pipeline to enable(1)predicting metal-IC wettability of interest and(2)high-throughput searching of ICs with the desired wettability by certain metals in the entire Inorganic Crystallographic Structure *** a demonstration of this pipeline,the wettability of a Li-ion and electron insulator(LEI),CaO,by molten Li is estimated and compared with ab initio molecular dynamics simulation *** ML pipeline can serve as a practical tool for methodical design of materials in systems where certain metalceramic wettability is desired.

Porous Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductor Interlayers for solid-State Batteries

Rechargeable solid-state batteries(SSBs)have emerged as the next-generation energy storage device based on lowered fire hazard and the potential of realizing advanced battery chemistries,such as alkali metal ***,ceramic solid electrolytes(SEs)generally have limited capability in relieving mechanical stress and are not chemically stable against body-centered cubic alkali metals or their alloys with minor solute elements(β-phase).Swelling-then-retreating ofβ-phase often causes instabilities such as SE fracture and corrosion as well as the loss of electronic/ionic contact,which leads to high charge-transfer resistance,short-circuiting,*** challenges have called for the cooperation from other classes of materials and novel nanocomposite architectures in relieving stress and preserving essential contacts while minimizing detrimental *** this review,we summarize recent progress in addressing these issues by incorporating other classes of materials such as mixed ion-electron conductor(MIEC)porous interlayers and ion-electron insulator(IEI)binders,in addition to SE and metals(e.g.,β-phase and current collectors)that are the traditional SSB *** particular,we focus on providing theoretical interpretations on how open nanoporous MIEC interlayers manipulateβ-phase deposition and stripping behavior and thereby suppress such instabilities,referring to the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics governing the nucleation and growth of theβ-*** review concludes by describing avenues for the future design of porous MIEC interlayers for SSBs.

Implantable biomedical devices require an anti-biofouling,mechanically robust,low friction surface for a prolonged lifespan and improved ***,there exist no methods that could provide uniform and effective coatings for medical devices with complex shapes and materials to prevent immune-related side effects and thrombosis when they encounter biological ***,we report a lubricant skin(L-skin),a coating method based on the application of thin layers of bio-adhesive and lubricant-swellable perfluoropolymer that impart anti-biofouling,frictionless,robust,and heat-mediated self-healing *** demonstrate biocompatible,mechanically robust,and sterilization-safe L-skin in applications of bioprinting,microfluidics,catheter,and long and narrow medical *** envision that diverse applications of L-skin improve device longevity,as well as anti-biofouling attributes in biomedical devices with complex shapes and material compositions.

Clinical characteristics of asymptomatic Terson syndrome in the patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

●AIM:To investigate clinical characteristics of asymptomatic Terson syndrome and its clinical impact in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH).●METHODS:This retrospective,interventional study included 31 patients with aneurysmal SAH,and the medical records were *** addition to baseline characteristics of the study population such as age,sex,and underlying medical history,multi-modal imaging analysis,including fluorescein angiography(FA),spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),were also *** Coma Scale(GCS),Hunt-Hess(HH)grade,and Fisher scale at the time of admission,and functional outcome by using modified Rankin Scale(mRS)at 6 mo were compared.●RESULTS:Of the 31 patients,10 patients(32.3%)were diagnosed with Terson *** the patients with Terson syndrome did not report visual symptoms at the time of ophthalmologic *** showed microvascular changes of retinal capillaries and varying degrees of disc ***-OCT allowed intuitive anatomical localization of multi-layered retinal hemorrhages and assessment of ellipsoid zone *** patients with Terson syndrome showed significantly worse GCS(P=0.047)and HH grade(P=0.025)than those without,except Ficher scale(P=0.385).There was no significant difference in the mRS(P=0.250)at 6 *** baseline factors,the HH grade was the only significant factor associated with Terson syndrome(B=1.079,P=0.016).●CONCLUSION:In our study,32.3%of the patients have Terson syndrome without visual *** baseline HH grade is significantly correlated with Terson syndrome,and there is no significant difference in the functional outcome between the patients with and without Terson *** syndrome may develop without any visual symptoms as shown in our study,and ophthalmologic screening may be recommended to prevent further visual deterioration especially in the patients with poor HH grade at the time of aneurysmal SAH.

C-terminal domain of hepatitis C virus core protein is essential for secretion

AIM: We have previously demonstrated that hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is efficiently released into the culture medium in insect cells. The objective of this study is to characterize the HCV core secretion in insect cells. METHODS: We constructed recombinant baculoviruses expressing various-length of mutant core proteins, expressed these proteins in insect cells, and examined core protein secretion in insect cells. RESULTS: Only wild type core was efficiently released into the culture medium, although the protein expression level of wild type core was lower than those of other mutant core proteins. We found that the shorter form of the core construct expressed the higher level of protein. However, if more than 18 amino acids of the core were truncated at the C-terminus, core proteins were no longer secreted into the culture medium. Membrane flotation data show that the secreted core proteins are associated with the cellular membrane protein, indicating that HCV core is secreted as a membrane complex. CONCLUSION: The C-terminal 18 amino acids of HCV core were crucial for core secretion into the culture media. Since HCV replication occurs on lipid raft membrane structure, these results suggest that HCV may utilize a unique core release mechanism to escape immune surveillance, thereby potentially representing the feature of HCV morphogenesis.

Development and application of a multi-step porcine in vitro system to evaluate feedstuffs and feed additives for their efficacy in nutrient digestion, digesta characteristics, and intestinal immune responses

In vitro model provides alternatives to the use of live animals in research. In pig nutrition, there has been a tremendous increase in in vivo research over the decades. Proper utilization of in vitro models could provide a screening tool to reduce the needs of in vivo studies, research duration, cost, and the use of animals and feeds. This study aimed to develop a multi-step porcine in vitro system to simulate nutrient digestion and intestinal epithelial immune responses affected by feedstuffs and feed additives. Seven feedstuffs(corn, corn distillers dried grains with solubles [corn DDGS], barley, wheat, soybean meal, soy protein concentrates, and Corynebacterium glutamicum cell mass [CGCM]), feed enzymes(xylanase and phytase), and supplemental amino acids(arginine, methionine, and tryptophan), were used in this in vitro evaluation for their efficacy on digestibility, digesta characteristics, and intestinal health compared with the results from previously published in vivo studies. All in vitro evaluations were triplicated. Data were analyzed using Mixed procedure of SAS9.4. Evaluations included(1) nutrient digestibility of feedstuffs,(2) the effects of feed enzymes, xylanase and phytase, on digestibility of feedstuffs and specific substrates, and(3) the effects of amino acids, arginine, tryptophan, and methionine, on anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-heat stress statuses showing their effects(P < 0.05) on the measured items. Differences in dry matter and crude protein digestibility among the feedstuffs as well as effects of xylanase and phytase were detected(P < 0.05), including xylo-oligosaccharide profiles and phosphorus release from phytate. Supplementation of arginine, tryptophan, and methionine modulated(P < 0.05) cellular inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. Sleep Posture Classification Using RGB and Thermal Cameras Based on Deep Learning Model

Sleep posture surveillance is crucial for patient comfort,yet current systems face difficulties in providing compre-hensive studies due to the obstruction caused by *** posture assessment remains challenging because of the complex nature of the human body and variations in sleep ***,this study introduces an innovative method utilizing RGB and thermal cameras for comprehensive posture classification,thereby enhancing the analysis of body position and *** method begins by capturing a dataset of sleep postures in the form of videos using RGB and thermal cameras,which depict six commonly adopted postures:supine,left log,right log,prone head,prone left,and prone *** study involves 10 participants under two conditions:with and without ***,the database is normalized into a video *** subsequent step entails training a fine-tuned,pretrained Visual Geometry Group(VGG16)and ResNet50 *** the third phase,the extracted features are utilized for *** fourth step of the proposed approach employs a serial fusion technique based on the normal distribution to merge the vectors derived from both the RGB and thermal ***,the fused vectors are passed to machine learning classifiers for final *** dataset,which includes human sleep postures used in this study’s experiments,achieved a 96.7%accuracy rate using the Quadratic Support Vector Machine(QSVM)without the ***,the Linear SVM,when utilized with a blanket,attained an accuracy of 96%.When normal distribution serial fusion was applied to the blanket features,it resulted in a remarkable average accuracy of 99%.
