Herein,the evolution of long-period stacking ordered(LPso)phases in the as-cast Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.6Zr(wt.%)alloy are investigated via transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and atom probe tomography(APT).The TEM results reveal that two types of LPso phase(a bulky interdendritic phase and a plate-like matrix LPso phase)are formed in the as-cast *** of the LPso phases are confirmed to be of the 14H type,with a smaller proportion being of the 18R ***,the APT results reveal that the composition of the interdendritic LPso phase is closer to that of the ideal 14H phase compared to the matrix LPso phase,and both the interdendritic and matrix LPso phases exhibit a Gd/Zn ratio of 2.5,thereby indicating a deficient Zn content compared to the ideal 14H phase(i.e.,1.3).In addition,the influence of the LPso phases on the deformation behavior is investigated at different compressive plastic strains using electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)analysis to reveal twinning and slip behavior during *** results indicate that the LPso phase induces additional work hardening in the late stage of deformation via the suppression of{1011}compressive twinning and the activation of non-basal slip systems.

A New Infrared Atmospheric sounding Interferometer Channel Selection and Assessment of Its Impact on Met Office NWP Forecasts

A new set of Infrared Atmospheric sounding Interferometer （IASI） channels was re-selected from 314 EUMETSAT channels. In selecting channels, we calculated the impact of the individually added channel on the improvement in the analysis outputs from a one-dimensional variational analysis （1D-Var） for the Unified Model （UM） data assimilation system at the Met Office, using the channel score index （CSI） as a figure of merit. Then, 200 channels were selected in order by counting each individual channel＇s CSI contribution. Compared with the operationally used 183 channels for the UM at the Met Office, the new set shares 149 channels, while the other 51 channels are new. Also examined is the selection from the entropy reduction method with the same 1D-Var approach, Results suggest that channel selection can be made in a more objective fashion using the proposed CSI method. This is because the most important channels can be selected across the whole IASI observation spectrum. In the experimental trial runs using the UM global assimilation system, the new channels had an overall neutral impact in terms of improvement in forecasts, as compared with results from the operational channels. However, upper-tropospheric moist biases shown in the control run with operational channels were significantly reduced in the experimental trial with the newly selected channels. The reduction of moist biases was mainly due to the additional water vapor channels, which are sensitive to the upper-tropospheric water vapor.

Reciprocal inhibition of expression between RAV1 and BES1 modulates plant growth and development in Arabidopsis

Distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in Yellow Sea sediments

To investigate the distribution, abundance, and species composition of dinoflagellate cysts in the Yellow Sea, surface sediment samples were collected at 37 sites, including the Korean dump site. Twenty-one di- noflagellate cyst taxa were identified, with the assemblages dominated mainly by Spiniferites bulloideus, Operculodinium centrocarpum, and cyst of Alexandrium catenella/tarnarense type. A high frequency of O. centrocarpum in the Yellow Sea was observed for the first time, and it is likely that this can be attributed to the dynamics of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass and the Changjiang （Yangtze） River runoff. Total cyst concentrations ranged from 23 to 48 442 cysts/g dry weight, and high cyst concentrations were recorded adjacent to the dumping site. This result suggests that anthropogenic activities such as ocean dumping s- timulate the growth of dinoflagellates in the Yellow Sea, which in turn leads to high levels of dinoflagellate cyst production.

Clinical applicability of gastroscopy with narrow-band imaging for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori gastritis, precancerous gastric lesion, and neoplasia

Standard vs magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric precancerous conditions

BACKGROUND Advances in endoscopic imaging enable the identification of patients at high risk of gastric ***,there are no comparative data on the utility of standard and magnifying narrow-band imaging(M-NBI)endoscopy for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori(***)infection,gastric atrophy,and intestinal *** To compare the diagnostic performance of standard and M-NBI endoscopy for *** gastritis and precancerous *** In 254 patients,standard endoscopy findings were classified into mosaic-like appearance(type A),diffuse homogenous redness(type B),and irregular redness with groove(type C).Gastric mucosal patterns visualized by M-NBI were classified as regular round pits with polygonal sulci(type Z-1),more dilated and linear pits without sulci(type Z-2),and loss of gastric pits with coiled vessels(type Z-3).RESULTS The diagnostic accuracy of standard and M-NBI endoscopy for *** gastritis was 93.3%and 96.1%,*** gastric precancerous conditions,the accuracy of standard and M-NBI endoscopy was 72.0%vs 72.6%for moderate to severe atrophy,and 61.7%vs.61.1%for intestinal metaplasia in the corpus,*** to type A and Z-1,types B+C and Z-2+Z-3 were significantly associated with moderate to severe atrophy[odds ratio(OR)=5.56 and 8.67]and serum pepsinogen I/II ratio of≤3(OR=4.48 and 5.69).CONCLUSION Close observation of the gastric mucosa by standard and M-NBI endoscopy is useful for the diagnosis of *** gastritis and precancerous conditions.

NOAA/AVHRR sea surface temperature accuracy in the East/Japan Sea

Sea surface temperature(SST)retrieved from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR)onboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA)polar orbiting environmental satellites were validated in the East/Japan Sea(EJS)using surface drifter measurements as ground truths from 2005 to ***,the root-mean-square(rms)errors of multichannel SSTs(MCSSTs)and non-linear SSTs(NLSSTs)using global SST coefficients were approximately 0.85℃ and 0.80℃,*** analysis of the SST errors(satellite-drifter)revealed a dependence on the amount of atmospheric *** addition,satellite-derived SSTs tended to be related to wind speeds,particularly during the *** SST errors also demonstrated diurnal variations with relatively higher rms from 0.80℃ to 1.00℃ during the night than the day,with a small rms of about 0.50℃.Bias also exhibited reasonable diurnal differences,showing small biases during the *** a satellite zenith angle has been considered in the global SST coefficients,its effect on the SST errors still remained in case of the *** the diverse use of SST data,the continuous validation and understanding of the characteristic errors of satellite SSTs should be conducted based on extensive in-situ temperature measurements in the global ocean as well as local seas.

Improvement of erectile function by Korean red ginseng （Panax ginseng） in a male rat model of metabolic syndrome

The seriousness of metabolic syndrome is not due to the disease itself but its promotion of other diseases, such as erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We investigated the effects of Korean red ginseng （KRG, Panax ginseng） extract on erectile function in a rat model of metabolic syndrome. We divided the rats into three groups： control, metabolic syndrome＋normal saline （N/S） and metabolic syndrome ＋ KRG. To determine the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in all groups, body weight and various biochemical parameters （e.g., blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol） were measured, and the intra-abdominal glucose tolerance test was performed. To investigate penile erection, the peak intracavernosal pressure （ICP）, mean arterial pressure （MAP） and Masson＇s trichrome stain were evaluated. Erectile function was also investigated by measuring the cyclic guanosine monophosphate （cGMP） levels of the corpus cavernosum. We found that the various biochemical parameters and body weight were similar in the metabolic syndrome＋KRG group and the control group, although the values were slightly higher. The peak ICP/MAP ratio of the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was markedly decreased compared to the other groups. The cGMP level of the corpus cavernosum in the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was significantly lower than that of the other groups. As demonstrated in this model of metabolic syndrome with erectile dysfunction, KRG may improve erectile function.
