Thermoelectric semiconductors based on CoSb_(3)hold the best promise for recovering industrial or automotive waste heat because of their high efficiency and relatively abundant,lead-free constituent ***,higher efficiency is needed before thermoelectrics reach economic viability for widespread *** this study,n-type In_(x)Ce_(y)Co_(4)Sb_(12+z)skutterudites with high thermoelectric performance are produced by combining several phonon scattering mechanisms in a panoscopic *** melt spinning followed by spark plasma sintering(MS-SPS),bulk In_(x)Ce_(y)Co_(4)Sb_(12+z)alloys are formed with grain boundaries decorated with nano-phase of *** skutterudite matrix has grains on a scale of 100-200 nm and the InSb nano-phase with a typical size of 5e15 nm is evenly dispersed at the grain boundaries of the skutterudite *** with the presence of defects on the Sb sublattice,this multi-scale nanometer structure is exceptionally effective in scattering phonons and,therefore,InxCey-Co_(4)Sb_(12)/InSb nano-composites have very low lattice thermal conductivity and high zT values reaching in excess of 1.5 at 800 K.

INTRODUCTION Decades of research have been devoted to studying the properties of nanostructured materials-e.g.,single crystalline wires,porous materials,polycrystals and laminatesfor applications ranging from heterogeneous catalysts to highstrength structures.1 Interest in nanoscale materials is motivated by their new(and often enhanced)properties,which are attributed to large interfacial areas and high surface defect concentrations.2 Nanoscale catalysts exhibit superior activities due to surface strains,increased population of dangling bonds,and unique surface electronic states established by surface/subsurface atomic interactions.3,4 For instance,bulk Au surfaces are relatively inert but Au nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic behavior.1,3 In a similar fashion,nanocrystalline metals possess exceptionally high yield strengths due to an increased barrier for plasticity mechanisms to operate in confined volumes and in close proximity to interfaces.1,2,5 Unfortunately,fabrication techniques for these materials are frequently resource-intensive and cannot be translated into commercial-scale processing.

Most crystalline materials follow the guidelines of T^(-1) temperature-dependent lattice thermal conductivity(κ_(L))at elevated ***,we observe a weak temperature dependence ofκL in Mg_(3)Sb_(2),T^(-0:48) from theory and T-0:57 from measurements,based on a comprehensive study combining ab initio molecular dynamics calculations and experimental measurements on single crystal Mg_(3)Sb_(2).These results can be understood in terms of the so-called“phonon renormalization”effects due to the strong temperature dependence of the interatomic force constants(IFCs).The increasing temperature leads to the frequency upshifting for those low-frequency phonons dominating heat transport,and more importantly,the phononphonon interactions are ***-depth analysis reveals that the phenomenon is closely related to the temperature-induced asymmetric movements of Mg atoms within MgSb_(4) *** increasing temperature,these Mg atoms tend to locate at the areas with relatively low force in the force profile,leading to reduced effective 3^(rd)-order *** locally asymmetrical atomic movements at elevated temperatures can be further treated as an indicator of temperature-induced variations of IFCs and thus relatively strong phonon *** present work sheds light on the fundamental origins of anomalous temperature dependence of κ_(L) in thermoelectrics.

Reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) is essential for irrigation, water resources management and environmental assessment. The indirect estimation of ETo is based a) on energy budget approach using meteorological data and b) pan evaporation measurements (Epan) multiplied by pan coefficients (kp) adapted to the surrounding environmental conditions. Significant interest is shown for the kp equations, which have to be tested before their use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate six different kp equations, such as those of Cuenca, Allen and Puitt, snyder, Pereira et al., Orang, Raghuwanshi and Wallender for the summer growing season (April to October) of Thessaloniki plain in Greece, which is characterized by a semi-arid Mediterranean environment. The evaluation of the kp equations is performed by two years Epan measurements, using as reference the daily ETo values estimated by the ASCE-standardized Penman-Monteith equation (ASCE-PM) in hourly time step. The results of this study showed that Cuenca’s equation provided more accurate daily estimations. Additional analysis is performed in other methods such as those of FAO-56 and Hargreaves based on the calculation time step (hourly or daily) and their correspondence to the ASCE-PM.

Objective: To assess the use of oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) to predi ct efficacy of insulin sensitization (metformin)-or suppression (octreotide) be cause insulin resistance and insulin hypersecretion may impact pharmacotherapeut ic efficacy in obese children. Study design: Forty-three and 24 obese children, with and without central nervous system (CNS) insult, underwent OGTT. Insulin s ensitivity was expressed as composite insulin sensitivity index (CISI), and secr etion as corrected insulin response (CIRgp). Those without CNS insult received metformin (weight-based dosing) for 6 to 16 months. Those with CNS insult receiv ed octreotide SQ 15 μg/kg/d for 6 months. Body mass index (BMI) and z-score responses were modeled using CIRgp and CISI. Results: Metformin: With CIRgp and CI SI = 1, BMI z-score in white children declined by 0.23 over the first 4 months (P z-score reduction, but with wide uncertainty (P= .24 ). Black children exhibited little response. Octreotide: With CIRgp and CISI = 1 , BMI z-score decreased by 0.23 in the first 4 months (P= .052). Efficacy was d ependent on an interaction between CIRgp and CISI (P= .051). Conclusions: Effica cy of metformin was predicted by pretreatment insulin resistance. Efficacy of oc treotide was predicted by insulin hypersecretion and sensitivity.
