Color Doppler sonography and angioscintigraphy in hepatic Hodgkin's lymphoma

AIm： To estimate the characteristics of Color Doppler findings and the results of hepatic radionuclide angiography （HRA） in secondary Hodgkin＇s hepatic lymphoma. mETHODS： The research included patients with a diagnosis of Hodgkin＇s lymphoma with metastatic focal lesions in the liver and controls. morphologic characteristics of focal liver lesions and hemodynamic parameters were examined by pulsed and Color Doppler in the portal, hepatic and splenic veins were examined. Hepatic perfusion index （HPI） estimated by HRA was calculated. was observed. Lesions were mostly hypoechoic and mixed, solitary or multiple. Some of the patients presented with dilated splenic veins and hepatofugal blood flow. A pulse wave was registered in the centre and at the margins of lymphoma. The average velocity of the pulse wave was higher at the margins （P 〉 0.05）. A continuous venous wave was found only at the margins of lymphoma. There was no linear correlation between lymphoma size and velocity of pulse and continuous wave （r = 390, P 〈 0.01）. HPI was significantly lower in patients with lymphomas than in controls （P 〈 0.05）, pointing out increased arterial perfusion in comparison to portal perfusion. CONCLUSION： Color Doppler ultrasonography is a sensitive method for the detection of neovascularization in Hodgkin＇s hepatic lymphoma and estimation of its intensity. Hepatic radionuclide angiography can additionally help in the assesment of vascularisation of liver lesions.

Problems in screening colorectal cancer in the elderly

AIm:To explore the problems in the screening of colorecta carcinoma in the elderly. mETHODS:Three models of colorectal cancer prevention were examined:standard screening,active check-up of suspected cases and summons to have endoscopic check- up for previously diagnosed colorectal *** study was performed among three groups of elderly individuals: Group 1 (167 cases),hospitalized asymptomatic individuals without symptoms in large *** 2 (612 cases): old individuals at home for the aged,out of which 32 showed symptoms of colon disorders;Group 3 (44 cases):elderly people with diagnosed *** a result of 1788 rectosigmoidoscopies,we identified 61 individuals with polyps,out of which 44 patients were over 65 years old. However,only 9 of these 44 individuals agreed to have the endoscopy performed again. RESULTS:One cancer and 13 polyps were detected in Group 1,and two polyps in Group ***,it should be noted that only eleven individuals from Group 2 agreed to have the *** Group 3,there were no relapses of the polyps among the nine individuals who came back for the endoscopy. CONCLUSION:Poor understanding of the screening procedures is one of the greatest problems in early detection of the cancer in the ***,the cooperation is better with hospitalized patients,than with 'successfully old' persons.

Essential oils and functional herbs for healthy aging

As total life expectancy increases, the prevalence of age-related diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease is also increasing. many hypotheses about Alzheimer's disease have been developed, including cholinergic neuron damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter in the brain and cholinergic deficits leads to cognitive dysfunction and decline. Recent studies have linked diabetes as a risk factor in developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The incidence of patients with type II diabetes and increased levels and activity of α-amylase is higher in patients with dementia. It has been shown that aromatherapy with essential oils from the mint family can improve cognitive performance in Alzheimer's disease patients. Selected monoterpenoids from these essential oils are reported to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, both in vitro and in vivo. Terpenoids are small, fat-soluble organic molecules that can transfer across nasal mucosa if inhaled, or penetrate through the skin after topical application, enter into the blood and cross the blood-brain barrier. Recent evidence supports the idea that the common constituents of essential oils also inhibit α-amylase, a starch digestive enzyme that plays an important role in the control of diabetes. The mint family is a fragrant plant family that contains most of the culinary herbs found in the mediterranean diet. The mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest diets in the world, and is found to be beneficial not only for the heart but also for the brain. Herbs used in this diet are rich in antioxidants that can prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals. However, our study shows that they also contain biologically active compounds with potent α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. Cross-Sectional Survey on Complementary and Alternative medicine Awareness among Health Care Professionals and Students Using CHBQ Questionnaire in a Balkan Country

Objective： To conduct a study on attitudes, knowledge, and use of complementary and altemative medicine （CAm） therapies in Serbia. Available data about CAm therapies in the region are scarce, opinions lacking from health sector. Balkan region countries had a delay in issuing national policies on CAm therapies. methods： The questionnaire used was based on previously validated CAm Health Belief Questionnaire （CHBQ）, formulated as 5-item Likert type scale, adjusted for local environment. Health care students and professionals were evaluated. The questionnaire comprehended 10 closed questions on attitudes, knowledge and use of CAm therapies. This survey was conducted in eight cities of Serbia, January 2010-July 2011. A total of 797 participants was included. The second group of participants was 145 healthcare professionals （50 academic staff, 64 clinical staff, 19 pharmacists, 6 other clinical branch specialists and 6 nurses）. Data were collected by an interview. Examinees could acquire maximum of 70 points, 35 representing neutral attitude. Restdts： Students of dentistry （54.65 ± 6.07） were better informed on CAm therapies than medicine students （50.26 ± 7.92）. Pharmacy students （51.16 ± 7.10） accepted low-scientific CAm. Pharmacists scored better than university professors （55.12±6.55 vs. 50.29± 9.50）. Primary health care professionals had better awareness than pharmacists in dispensing pharmacies. Both groups of participants preferred use of vitamins over any other CAm therapy. Conclusion： These pioneering efforts in the region exposed weaknesses in CAm attitudes of current and future health care professionals. Nevertheless, awareness on alternative medicine treatment choices is growing among Balkan prescribers. Supportive legal framework would facilitate dissemination of CAm medical practices.

Anticancer activity of diterpenes and steroids from Eunicella singularis against two- and three-dimensional breast cancer cell models

Objective: To investigate the anticancer activity of two diterpenes [palmonine F (C1) and palmonine D (C2)] and three steroids [cholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (C3), stigmasterol (C4) and 5α-cholest-5-en-3β-ol (C5)], isolated from the mediterranean gorgonian Eunicella singularis, against mCF-7 breast cancer cell line. methods: This study was performed on standard monolayer two-dimensional (2D) model to evaluate apoptosis by means of AnnexinV-FITC/PI flow cytometry and on three-dimensional (3D) spheroid model using Celigo imaging cytometer for spheroids size analysis. Results: Results indicated that both diterpenes and steroids exhibited an important apoptotic activity in a concentration-dependent manner with EC50 values of 13, 49, 30, 66 and 65 μg/mL for C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5, respectively. Treatment of mCF-73D cell model with C1–C5 induced growth regression of spheroids in a concentration-dependent manner similar to the clinical anti-breast cancer drug Taxol;over ten days of incubation, growth rates were mpounds at 200 μg/mL. Conclusions: The present study indicates that the two diterpenes C1 and C2 and the three steroids C3, C4 and C5, isolated from Eunicella singularis, might be used as anti-breast cancer candidate drugs for further development.
