A review of shear strength models for rock joints subjected to constant normal stiffness

The typical shear behaviour of rough joints has been studied under constant normal load/stress （CNL） boundary conditions, but recent studies have shown that this boundary condition may not replicate true practical situations. Constant normal stiffness （CNS） is more appropriate to describe the stress-strain response of field joints since the CNS boundary condition is more realistic than CNL. The practical implications of CNS are movements of unstable blocks in the roof or walls of an underground excavation, reinforced rock wedges sliding in a rock slope or foundation, and the vertical movement of rock-socketed concrete piles. In this paper, the highlights and limitations of the existing models used to predict the shear strength/behaviour of joints under CNS conditions are discussed in depth.

This paper presents a Model-Based Design(MBD)approach for the design and control of a customized manipulator intended for drilling and position-ing of dental implants accurately with minimal human *** performing an intra-oral surgery for a prolonged duration within a limited oral cavity,the tremor of dentist's hand is *** a result,wielding the drilling tool and inserting the dental implants safely in accurate position and orientation is highly challenging even for experienced ***,we introduce a customized manipulator that is designed ergonomically by taking in to account the dental chair specifications and anthropomorphic data such that it can be readily mounted onto the existing dental *** manipulator can be used to drill holes for dental inserts and position them with improved accuracy and ***-more,a thorough multi-body motion analysis of the manipulator was carried out by creating a virtual prototype of the manipulator and simulating its controlled movements in various *** overall design was prepared and validated in simulation using Solid works,MATLAB and Simulink through Model Based Design(MBD)*** motion simulation results indicate that the manipulator could be built as a prototype readily.

Combining ability and gene action studies for yield and fibre traits in Gossypium arboreum using Griffings numerical and Haymans graphical approach

Background For the purpose of utilising hybrid vigour to produce possible hybrids with a suitable level of stability,the knowledge of gene activity and combining ability is a crucial prerequisite before choosing desirable *** present study was carried out with six parents crossed in full diallel fashion and generated 30 F1 *** hybrids were evaluated in two replications in Randomized Block Design at Department of Cotton,TNAU for combining ability and gene *** analysis was carried out according to Griffing’s method-I(parents + F_(1) + reciprocals) and model-I and Hayman’s graphical approach by using INDOSTAT *** Analysis of variance for combining ability indicated that mean square values of GCA,SCA and reciprocals were highly significant for all the traits except for the uniformity ***763 and K12 showed highly positively significant GCA effects for most of the yield traits while PA838 and K12 for fibre quality traits,so they were found as best general ***379 × K12 and PDB29 × K12 for yield traits,and PDB29 × PA838,RG763 × PA838,and CNA1007 × RG763 cross combinations for fibre quality traits could be recommended for future breeding *** The results of both Griffing’s and Hayman’s approaches showed that non-additive gene action predominates as SCA variance was bigger than GCA variance,so heterosis breeding is thought to be a more fruitful option for enhancing GCA of many traits.

Effective removal of automobile exhausts over flower-like Ce_(1-x)Cu_xO_2 nanocatalysts exposed active {100} plane

This work elucidates the synthesis and characterization of copper ions incorporated ceria(Ce1-xCuxO2)nanocatalysts with 3 D flower-like and nanocrystalline morphology for the purification of automobile exhausts. XRD and Raman results confirm the presence of copper ions in ceria. The 3 D flower-like and nanocrystalline morphology exhibited by these catalysts were seen by FESEM images. HRTEM and SAED results confirm that(100) plane is dominantly presented in 3 D flower-like Ce1-xCuxO2catalysts when compared to nanocrystalline morphology. The textural properties of synthesized catalysts was done with the help of N2 sorption study, which confirms that flower-like Ce1-xCuxO2catalysts show high surface area and pore volume. The existence of Ce3+, Ce4+, Cu+and Cu2+ions in the catalyst were examined by XPS and DR UV-Vis techniques. Oxygen storage capacity(OSC) of the catalysts was studied by H2-TPR analysis. These characterization results elucidate the presence of dominant active sites(Ce3+, Ce4+, Cu+and Cu2+) and {100} plane in the flower-like morphology compared to nanocrystalline. The catalytic activity of synthesized Ce1-xCuxO2catalysts was tested for removal of CO, HCxand NO gases from automobile emission with respect to the copper content and morphology. The obtained results indicate that the presence of optimum amount of copper in ceria with flower-like morphology is essential for the removal of CO, HCxand NO at low temperature via redox process, which is due to the presence of active sites on the dominant {100} plane.

Mesenchymal stem cells for kidney transplantation

The long term consequence of immunosuppressive therapy in kidney transplantation has prompted investigation of alternative means to modify the immune response to the allograft. Cell based therapies are potentially attractive as they may provide a long lasting immunomodulatory effect, may repair tissues and reduce the necessity to take immunosuppressive drug therapy. Of the current cell therapies, mesenchymal stem cells have now been trialled in small numbers of human kidney transplantation with apparent safety and potential efficacy. Many issues however need to be resolved before these cells will become mainstays of transplant immunosuppression including ex vivo modification to enhance immunomodulatory properties, cell number, route and frequency of administration as well as cellular source of origin.
