Effect of irrigation water containing arsenic on elemental composition of bean and lettuce plants cultivated in calcareous sandy soil

Background:The uptake of arsenic by vegetables from soil irrigated with arsenic enriched groundwater poses a major health *** edible portion of these vegetables transfer arsenic to the human *** uptake of arsenic was studied in bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)and lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.)in a controlled greenhouse pot culture with calcareous sandy soil as *** plants were irrigated with water containing sodium arsenate at concentrations 0.1,0.25 and 0.5 mg L^(-1).The total arsenic concentration of the different plants parts was determined by ICP-MS,following microwave-assisted acid *** change in plant biomass production and essential macroelements(Mg,P,K)and microelements concentration(Fe,Mn,Cu,Zn)was also ***:The As concentration in the bean was in the order:root>stem>leaf>bean fruit and in lettuce:root>*** the highest dose(0.5 mg L^(-1))the As concentration in the bean fruit and lettuce leaves was 22.1μg kg^(-1)and 1207.5μg kg^(-1)DW,*** As concentration in the irrigation water resulted in decreased edible biomass production in bean,while in lettuce the edible biomass production *** plant exhibited any visible toxicity *** significant change was observed in the macro and microelements *** total and the water-soluble arsenic in soil amounted to 3.5 mg kg^(−1)and 0.023 mg kg^(−1),*** transfer factor was found to increase with increase in the As treatment *** transfer factor range for bean from root to fruit was 0.003–0.005,and for lettuce from root to leaves was 0.14–***:Considering the FAO-WHO recommended maximum tolerable daily intake(MTDI)limit of 2.1μg kg^(-1)body weight,and the biomass production,both plants should not be cultivated at As treatment level higher than 0.1 mg L^(-1).

Correlation of Hamstring Tendon Size in Pre-Operative MRI Measurement with Intra-Operative Graft Size in Primary Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction

Background: The size of Hamstring autograft of less than 8.0 mm in ACL re-construction is one of the key factors that may contribute to the failure of the graft. In this study, we are going to assess the correlation of pre-operative MRI measurement of Hamstring tendons with the intra-operative ACL graft. Thus, it may help surgeons to anticipate the needs for graft augmentation should the final graft size be smaller than expected. Methods: We retrospectively re-viewed 41 cases of ACL reconstructions in which MRI were done pre-operatively, in Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah (HPSF), Muar between January 2019 until December 2022. MRI measurements of Hamstring tendon (semitendinosus: ST, and gracilis) were done by a radiologist, and the in-tra-operative notes were reviewed for the final graft size. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the relationship between graft size and tendon cross-sectional area. The intraclass correlation (ICC) by using two-way mixed model with type consistency, the reliability based on average measure was 0.41 (95% CI: ?0.10, 0.69). A p-value < 0.05 was considered sig-nificant. Results: Of 105 patients with primary ACL reconstruction done be-tween January 2019 to December 2022, only 41 patients were included in this study. There was fair correlation (p = 0.048) between pre-operative MRI measurement and the graft diameter intra-operatively. The mean of 17.0 mm of combined diameter of ST and gracilis tendon in MRI may results in graft diameter of 8.3 mm. There was also positive correlation between patients’ height and the intra-operative graft size. Conclusion: These results showed good correlation between pre-operative MRI measurement of Hamstring ten-don size with the intra-operative graft size, hence it is a reliable tool to predict the Hamstring autograft size in ACL reconstruction.

Novel manganese(Ⅱ)-based deep eutectic solvents: Synthesis and physical properties analysis

Type IV deep eutectic solvent（DES） involves the formation of metal-based eutectics from metal salts or metal salt hydrate in combination with various hydrogen-bond donors（HBDs） such as urea, ethylene glycol or acetamide. In current study, two distinguished approaches were used to synthesize potential DESs, given as the direct heating and the evaporating methods. Successful synthesized DESs were subjected for physical properties characterization by Fourier Transform Infrared（FTIR） Spectroscopy, thermal stability, viscosity,and conductivity analyses. Five novel manganese（II）-based DESs were successfully synthesized as reported in this study. Data obtained indicated that the Mn Cl2á4H2Oáacetamide DES exhibits the lowest freezing point（27.5℃）, highest thermal stability（193℃ point of dehydration）, lowest viscosity（E = 112.8cP） and the highest conductivity（0.12723 mS/cm）. The findings obtained reveal the characteristics, nature or features of synthesized DESs as potential industrial solvents.

Does sevoflurane sedation in pediatric patients lead to“pseudo”leptomeningeal enhancement in the brain on 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging?

Antimicrobial,antityrosinase and brine shrimp lethality test of Bauhinia rufescens Lam(Fabaceae)

Objective:To evaluate leaves and stem bark extracts of Bauhinia rufescens for antimicrobial activities,tyrosinase enzyme inhibition potentials and lethality to brine shrimp larvae(Artemiasalina).Methods:The plant materials were extracted based on polarity gradient of petroleum ether,ethyl acetate and *** extracts were investigated for their antimicrobial,antityrosinase and cytotoxicity ***:The antimicrobial results indicated that the extracts inhibited the microbial growth in the range of 6.00-12.57 mm(450-1800μg/mL)for bacterial strains and 7.33-14.03 mm(225-1800μg/mL)for fungal *** the tyrosinase enzyme inhibition assay of the extracts showed that both the petroleum ether leaves and stem bark extracts exhibited a moderate inhibition(39.60%and 39.89%)towards the action of mushroom tyrosinase enzyme on *** the brine shrimp lethality assay,ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the leaves of the plant were found toxic to the Artemia salina with IC_(50)values of 0.059 mg/mL and 0.389 mg/***,both the petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts of the stem bark were nontoxic to the ***:The result of the present study suggest the presence of phytochemicals possessing antimicrobial and antityrosinase activity as well as cytotoxic agents.

Subsequently,it is argued that transformation can be effective if it is to be undertaken at a much smaller spatial entity dubbed the ’learning regions’.While ’learning regions’ are already evident in matured higher education systems,in countries where the higher education systems are going through a transformational stage,the learning process has only just *** is typical of many developing countries,societal transformations in Malaysia are being spearheaded by key ’transformers’ such as policy-makers,corporate leaders and ***,learning regions are important vehicles for Malaysia to achieve high-income country status by 2020. With the development in higher education in Malaysia since 1970 as a background,and adopting the learning region conceptual framework as an analytical construct,this paper will examine and deliberate upon Malaysia’s attempt at societal transformation through systematic development in higher education system and institutions based on ’learning region’ *** examples from the Kuala Lumpur city-region and the Iskandar Malaysia region(to the south bordering Singapore) this paper will provide an assessment of lessons learned to date.
