Tubastraea coccinea: A Non-Indigenous Coral (Cnidaria, Scleractinia) Collected at Arvoredo Island, South of Brazil with Potential MRSA and VRE Antimicrobial Activity

Bacterial infection is considered to be one of the most critical health issues of the world. It is essential to overcome this problem by the development of new drugs. Marine organisms as corals, sponges, seaweeds, and other are an incredible source of novel pharmacologically active compounds. Herein, the antimicrobial activity (extract/fractions) of the invasive stony coralTubastraea coccinea was evaluated by the disk diffusion method against 21 microbial strains (ATCC and clinical strains). Micro broth dilution was used to determinate the MIC of the fractions that showed antimicrobial activity by the disk diffusion method. Bioautography assay was also performed. Our results showed that the n-butanol (BF) and aqueous fractions (AF) showed activity against ATCC strains Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 31.25 and 250 μg/mL),Salmonella typhimurium (MIC 125 and 500 μg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL), respectively. Moreover, BF fraction was also effective against the clinical strains S. aureus(MIC 62.5 μg/mL), Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase—KPC (MIC 125 μg/mL), Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus—MRSA (MIC 125 μg/mL) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis—VRE (MIC 62.5 μg/mL). The ratio MBC/MIC reinforces the bactericidal profile of BF fraction. The bioautography assay of BF fraction showed the presence of antimicrobial components at Rf0.55.

Studies of problems involving physical anisotropy are applied in sciences and engineering,for instance,when the thermal conductivity depends on the *** this study,the multigrid method was used in order to accelerate the convergence of the iterative methods used to solve this type of *** asymptotic convergence factor of the multigrid was determined empirically(computer aided)and also by employing local Fourier analysis(LFA).The mathematical model studied was the 2D anisotropic diffusion equation,in whichε>0 was the coefficient of a *** equation was discretized by the Finite Difference Method(FDM)and Central Differencing Scheme(CDS).Correction Scheme(CS),pointwise Gauss-Seidel smoothers(Lexicographic and Red-Black ordering),and line Gauss-Seidel smoothers(Lexicographic and Zebra ordering)in x and y directions were used for building the *** best asymptotic convergence factor was obtained by the Gauss-Seidel method in the direction x for 0>*** this sense,an xy-zebra-GS smoother was proposed,which proved to be efficient and robust for the different anisotropy ***,the convergence factors calculated empirically and by LFA are in agreement.

Burn injury induces histopathological changes and cellproliferation in liver of rats

AIM: To investigate effects of severe burn injury(BI) in rat liver through the histopathological and inflammatory markers analysis. METHODS: Forty-two male Wistar rats were distributed into two groups, control(C) and subjected to scald BI(SBI). The animals were euthanized one, four and 14 d post sham or 45% of the total body surface BI. Liver fragments were submitted to histopathological, morphoquantitative(hepatocyte area and cell density), ciclooxigenase-2(COX-2) immunoexpression, and gene expression [real-time polymerase chain reaction for tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) and caspase-3] methods. RESULTS: Histopathological findings showed inflammatory process in all periods investigated and hepatocyte degeneration added to increased amount of connective tissue 14 d post injury. Hepatocyte area, the density of binucleated hepatocytes and density of sinusoidal cells of SBI groups were increased when compared with control. COX-2 immunoexpression was stronger in SBI groups. No differences were found in TNF-α, i NOS and caspase-3 gene expression. CONCLUSION: BI induces histopathological changes, upregulation of COX-2 immunoexpression, and cell proliferation in liver of rats.

Effect of age and different doses of dietary vitamin E on breast meat qualitative characteristics of finishing broilers

The supplementation of vitamin E on broiler chicken diets is essential to the prevention of lipid oxidation reactions in the meat and improvement of meat *** objective of this study was to assess the effect of different doses of dietary vitamin E on breast meat quality of broiler chickens in the finishing *** doses of vitamin E were used(30,90,150,210,and 270 mg/kg feed)in broilers'diets from 42 to 54 d of age.A completely randomized design was conducted,followed by a split-plot,where the vitamin E dose was considered as the whole plot,and broilers'age at slaughter was the *** meat quality was assessed at 4 different ages(45,48,51,and 54 d old),using 50 birds per age,totaling 200 *** quality characteristics evaluated were:pH at 24 h post mortem,color(brightness,redness,and yellowness),water holding capacity,cooking loss,shear force,and lipid *** was no interaction between age and dose of vitamin E for meat quality characteristics(P>0.05).The age at slaughter had a quadratic effect(Pder birds(51 and 52 d old),breast meat of younger birds(48 d)had a more reddish *** force value was higher in breast meat of birds slaughtered at later ages(P<0.01),as a linear age-effect was *** increased linearly(P<0.05)with higher vitamin doses,whereas treatments did not alter yellowness,cooking loss,and lipid *** this study,increasing vitamin E doses in the finishing period increased the brightness of broiler breast meat,whereas slaughtering at later ages resulted in greater meat pH and shear force value.

depending on the magnitude and nature of a disaster,identifying the victims can be a complex task that requires coordinated work by disaster victim identification(DVI)teams based on pre-established ***,the analysis of fingerprints has been presented as a method to establish,when possible,the identity of the victims during the DVI *** study discusses the importance of this primary method of identification and the results obtained in four different disasters in which Brazilian DVI teams were involved:the Air France Flight AF447 plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean,floods and mudslides in the State of Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,the LaMia Flight 2933 plane crash in Colombia,and the tailings dam collapse in Brumadinho,***,we also report the use of the automatic fingerprint capture and identification system,called Alethia,developed by the Federal Police of Brazil and used in the victim identification process in the two latter events mentioned above.

Objective:To investigate the morphological structure of ovarian follicular cells and biochemical parameters of both ovaries and fat bodies(sites of vitellogenesis)from Rhodnius(R.)prolixus infected with Trypanosoma(T.)***:Adult virgin females of *** were fed upon a membrane apparatus containing heat-inactivated citrated rabbit blood and a suspension of *** epimastigotes(Macias strain).Females from the control group and all the males received parasite-free *** electron microscopy was used to reveal the morphological aspects of ovarian follicle cells in both control and parasite-infected *** profile,proteolytic activities and Western blotting analyses were performed in either ovary or fat body samples of control and parasite-infected ***:According to the ultrastructural data,*** infection elicited a degeneration process in the ovarian follicular cells of *** assays indicated a reduction in the activity of aspartic peptidases in the ovary and fat body from parasite-infected group,while a significant increase in the cysteine peptidase activity was measured in both insect ***,immunoblotting revealed that vitellogenin was overexpressed in the ovary of parasite-infected ***:*** infection seems to elicit an early programmed cell death in the ovarian follicle cells as well as induces the modulation on the activities of different peptidase classes in either ovaries or fat bodies and the overexpression of the vitellogenin in the ovary of ***.

Between the Craft and the Mud:An Analysis of the Work and Health Relationship of Firefighters in the Breach of the Córrego do Feijão Dam-Brumadinho/MG

Faced with the rupture of the Vale *** dam that hit the city of Brumadinho(MG),the article sought to better understand the organisation of work of military firefighters who participated in the search and rescue operation and the relationship between work and health present in this *** is qualitative research with a focus on the subjective production of the speeches of seven firefighters who were interviewed individually with a semi-structured script,using as a basis of analysis the ergological perspective and the productions of the psychodynamics of *** firefighters experienced a scenario with risks of injury,contamination,and even *** the interviews,they showed that the more than twelve hours of work were responsible for sleep problems during and after the performance,as well as the food provided and the lack of time for physical exercise proved to be aggravating factors for their *** in the tailing’s mud combined the development of musculoskeletal problems and anxiety,due to the possibility of contamination by metals present in the *** work relationships show a high degree of trust and recognition between the firefighters and the affected population,which helped in the motivation and continuation of the operation until the present *** work in this operation that gained national prominence was responsible for the feeling of pride and for feeling more capable and prepared to act in other *** research is expected to broaden the discussion about the work-health relationship of military firefighters exposed to disasters,as well as serve as a subsidy to encourage the creation of public policies focused on the health of these workers.

Rainwater Harvesting in Multifamily Social Interest Housing

This study evaluated the reduction of water consumption in a SIH （social interest housing） complex from the simulation of implanting a rainwater harvesting system. The methodology consisted of characterization of the case study, survey data of water consumption and data of precipitation in the area, on-site visits to define the average consumption and monthly water distribution, and sizing of a rainwater harvesting tank following the Netuno Program. It was obtained 22.500 L as the ideal volume for the tank, supplying the demand for drinkingwater in 32%, although the reduction in the drinking water bills would be minor, since the object of the case study is considered SIH, and residents pay a fixed fee for consuming up to 10 m3 per month. Therefore, it becomes necessary to analyze this situation from a sustainable and environmental perspective, and the benefits are no longer only economic, but rather they take on a more comprehensive social dimension.

Regulation of Pollen Foraging Activity in Apis mellifera Africanized Honeybees Colonies

Efficient honey production requires knowledge about the behavior of the workers and the parameters that influence the strength of the colony. In this study, the objective was to analyze the interaction between the foraging behavior of worker honeybees and pollen storage levels in Africanized honeybees colonies. Colonies with low pollen storage increased pollen intake rates, but this value was 15% lower than colonies with high pollen storage, demonstrating a direct relationship between the pollen storage levels and foraging activity. The difference in pollen intake rates varied according to the number of foraging honeybees and pollen load collected by each individual. Under both high and low pollen storage, colonies returned pollen storage to initial level within 16 days, suggesting that honeybees regulate pollen storage levels around a homeostatic set point. Relationship between pollen storage levels and colony brood production was also found, indicating how alterations in the behavior of each individual can affect the strength of the colony.

HLA antigens in individuals with down syndrome and alopecia areata

AIM: To describe human leukocyte antigen(HLA) alleles in individuals with Down syndrome and alopecia areata. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, which evaluated 109 individuals. Ten with down syndrome(DS) and alopecia areata(AA), ten with DS without AA and ten with AA without DS, and their fami-lies. The individuals were matched by gender and age. The following data were computed: gender, age, ethnic group, karyotype, clinical presentation and family history of alopecia areata. descriptive analysis: measures of central tendency and frequency distribution. Inferential analysis: Fisher's exact test to compare categorical data between the three groups and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA test for numerical ***: Seventy per cent of evaluated individuals in the DS and AA group were male; presented mean age of 18.6(SD ± 7.2) years and 70% were Caucasian. We observed involvement of the scalp, with a single lesion in 10% and multiple in 90% of subjects. It was observed that there is no significant difference in the frequency distributions of the alleles HLA loci A, B, C, DRB1 and DQB1 of subjects studied. However, according to Fisher's exact test, there is a trend(P = 0.089) of DS group to present higher proportions of HLA-A 36 and HLA-B 15 than the AA group and AA and DS ***: There was a tendency for the DS group, to present proportion of HLA-A 36 and HLA-B 15 higher than the AA group and group of individuals with AA and DS. However, there was no significant difference in the frequency distribution of the alleles.
