Dynamics of groundwater recharge near a semi-arid Mediterranean intermittent stream under wet and normal climate conditions

In arid and semi-arid stream-dominated systems,the temporal variability in groundwater recharge has not been widely *** questions remain about the sources of groundwater recharge,its patterns,and the appropriate measuring ***,the main objective of the present study was to assess the changes that might affect the pattern of groundwater recharge under wetter than normal surface water ***,the groundwater depth was monitored near a semi-arid Mediterranean intermittent stream on the piedmont of the High Atlas Mountains in the mountain catchment of the Wadi Rheraya over two hydrological years(2014-2016)with different climate conditions:extreme wet and normal *** recharge was assessed using the episodic master recession *** the two years,the pattern of groundwater recharge was dominated by episodic events and by a high seasonality from wet seasons to dry *** the wet year(2014-2015),the highest groundwater recharge was recorded following an extreme flood,which deeply replenished ***,an exceptional steady state of the groundwater depth was induced by a steady groundwater recharge *** several groundwater recharge events,the assessed recharge had multiple sources,mainly from streamflow at the local scale,but possibly from precipitation,underflow,deep percolation or irrigation return from the upstream part of the *** recharge by streamflow was likely to be short-lived,and lateral recharge was likely to last ***,the episodic master recession algorithm estimated the total groundwater recharge that could encompass various *** the future,more studies and multidisciplinary approaches should be carried out to partition these sources and determine their specific *** semi-arid stream-dominated systems,different groundwater recharge patterns induced by extreme hydrological events(e.g.,wet events)and various potential sources of gro

Standardization of choroidal thickness measurements using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

AIM: To describe and evaluate a standardized protocol for measuring the choroidal thickness(Ch T) using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI OCT).METHODS: Single 9 mm EDI OCT line scans across the fovea were used for this study. The protocol used in this study classified the EDI OCT images into four groups based on the appearance of the choroidal-scleral interface and suprachoroidal space. Two evaluation iterations of experiments were performed: first, the protocol was validated in a pilot study of 12 healthy eyes. Afterwards, the applicability of the protocol was tested in 82 eyes of patients with diabetes. Inter-observer and intra-observer agreements on image classifications were performed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient(κ). Intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) and Bland-Altman’s methodology were used for the measurement of the Ch ***: There was a moderate(κ=0.42) and perfect(κ =1) inter- and intra-observer agreements on image classifications from healthy eyes images and substantial(κ =0.66) and almost perfect(κ =0.86) agreements from diabetic eyes images. The proposed protocol showed excellent inter- and intra-observer agreements for the Ch T measurements on both, healthy eyes and diabetic eyes(ICC >0.90 in all image categories). The Bland-Altman plot showed a relatively large Ch T measurement agreement in the scans that contained less visible choroidal outer boundary. CONCLUSION: A protocol to standardize Ch T measurements in EDI OCT images has been developed;the results obtained using this protocol show that the technique is accurate and reliable for routine clinical practice and research.

Cannibalism in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum

previous observations of cannibalism have been made in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum （L.）： this article seeks to quantify factors contributing to such be- haviors. We observed and quantified the responses of a number of clones and life stages to varying levels of starvation, in the form of increasingly desiccated Vicafaba L. plants （receiving 50, 25, or 10 mL every second day） or a complete absence of host plant. We found that, while the longest incidences of cannibalism are carried out by juveniles （F = 3.45, p = 0.019, df = 3） and targeted at adults, the starvation treatments had the most significant effect on the prevalence of cannibalism in mature A. pisum （F ---- 2.24, p = 0.025, df = 9）. Furthermore, there was no difference between the prevalence or dura- tion of cannibalistic activities within and between different clones （p 〉 0.05 in all cases）, though juveniles were more likely to target unrelated aphids （V = 6 112, p = 0.011）, and spent more time feeding on aphids from the same culture （V = 6 062, p = 0.018）.

Detailed analysis of the impact of age on the QT interval

Objective To analyze the effect of age on the ECG QT interval, an important predictor of cardiovascular mortality and drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias, and determine whether QT-heart rate correction formulae （QTc） have differential relationships with age and sex. Methods Data were examined from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey （NHANES） II and III, civilian population aged 25 to 90 years. QT weighted means and standard deviations were calculated for all ages. The QTc were evaluated for six QTc： proposed by Bazett （QTcBZT）, Fridericia （QTcFRD）, Hodges （QTcHDG）, Dmitrienko （QTcDMT）, Rautaharju （QTcRTHa） and Framingham （QTcFRM）. Results QTc was strongly related to age and gender, for all formulae except for QTcBZT for women. The relationship between QTc and age was significant regardless of whether the relationship was approximated by a linear or non-linear （quadratic or cubic spline） model. QTc increased more dramatically with age in men. There was a significant （p 〈 0.001） positive relationship between QTc variance and age for each QTc formula for both men and women. There were a greater proportion of individuals with longer QTc with older ages especially age 80 years and above. Conclusion QTc and its variance increase with age. prolonged QTc is more prevalent in older individuals, especially men.

Use of testicular sperm in couples with SCSA-defined high sperm DNA fragmentation and failed intracytoplasmic sperm injection using ejaculated sperm

Sperm DNA fragmentation(SDF)has been linked with male infertility,and previous studies suggest that SDF can have negative influence on pregnancy outcomes with assisted *** performed a retrospective review of consecutive couples with a high SDF level that had intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI)using testicular sperm(T-ICSI).We compared the T-ICSI outcomes to that of two control groups:87 couples with failed first ICSI cycle and who had a second ICSI cycle using ejaculated sperm(Ej-ICSI),and 48 consecutive couples with high sperm chromatin structure assay(SCSA)-defined SDF(>15%)that underwent an ICSI cycle using ejaculated sperm after one or more failed ICSI cycles(Ej-ICSI-high SDF).The mean number of oocytes that were retrieved and the total number of embryos were not different among the three *** mean number of transferred embryos in the T-ICSI group was higher than the Ej-ICSI group but not significantly different than the Ej-ICSI-high SDF group(1.4,1.2,and 1.3,respectively,ppregnancy rate in the T-ICSI group was not significantly different than the Ej-ICSI and Ej-ICSI-high SDF groups(48.6%,48.2%,and 38.7%,respectively,p>0.05).No significant difference was found in live birth rate when comparing T-ICSI to Ej-ICSI and Ej-ICSI-high SDF *** results suggest that pregnancy outcomes and live birth rates with T-ICSI are not significantly superior to Ej-ICSI in patients with an elevated SCSA-defined sperm DNA fragmentation and prior ICSI failure(s).

Background The Anxiety Symptoms Questionnaire(ASQ)is a brief self-report questionnaire which measures frequency and intensity of symptoms and was developed to improve assessment of anxiety symptoms in a clinical *** examined the reliability and validity of the ASQ in patients with anxiety disorders and/or depression,nonclinical control subjects and college *** 240 outpatients with generalised anxiety disorder,social anxiety disorder,panic disorder or major depressive disorder were administered the ASQ and additional questionnaires measuring depression and anxiety,as were 111 non-clinical control subjects and 487 college *** analysis,pearson's correlation coefficients and logistic regression were used to assess reliability and ***-retest reliability of the ASQ was measured using a subset who were re-administered the ASQ after 4 *** Factor analysis revealed measurement of a single dimension by the *** consistency and test-retest reliability were *** ASQ total score also significantly distinguished patients with an anxiety disorder from the clinical controls above and beyond the clinicianrated Hamilton Anxiety *** The ASQ is a valid,reliable and effective self-rated measure of anxiety and may be a useful tool for screening and assessing anxiety symptoms in psychiatric as well as college settings.
