Glomus tumors derive from the glomus cell around arteriovenous anastomosis. These are rare tumors and when found are most common in the deep dermis of the extremities. In rarer cases still they have been reported to be found in the lung. These are most commonly incidental findings of solitary lesions of the lung with a pre-operative differential diagnosis of non-small cell carcinomas and carcinoids. Due to the rare nature of these tumors, they are rarely considered in the differential diagnosis and are also often misdiagnosed at the time of frozen section. We present three cases of glomus tumors of the lung with emphasis on the consideration of the method of diagnosis, histological findings and management.

Interest in phenotypic flexibility has increased dramatically over the last decade, but flexibility during reproduction hasreceived relatively little attention from avian scientists, despite its possible impact on fitness. Because most avian species maintainatrophied reproductive organs when not active, reproduction in birds requires major tissue remodeling in preparation for *** undergo rapid (days) recrudescence and regression of their reproductive organs at each breeding attempt, while males growtheir organs ahead of time at a much slower rate (weeks) and may maintain them at maximal size throughout the breeding *** is associated with significant metabolic costs. Egg production leads to a 22%-27% increase in resting metabolic rate(RMR) over non-reproductive values. This is partly due to the activity of the oviduct, an organ that may allow females to adjustreproductive investment by modulating egg size and quality. In males, gonadal recrudescence may lead to a 30% increase in RMR,but the data are inconsistent and general conclusions regarding energetic costs of reproduction in males will require more *** studies on captive female zebra finches describe the impacts of these costs on daily energy budgets and highlight thestrategies used by birds to maintain their investment in reproduction when energy is limited. Whenever possible, birds use behavioralflexibility as a first means of saving energy. Incidence and mortality of primary liver cancer in England and Wales: Changing patterns and ethnic variations

Stable second-order nonlinearity (SON) was created in Pyrex borosilicate glass by the temperature/electric field thermal poling method. The distribution and amplitude of the induced nonlinearity were characterized with second harmonic microscopy. It was found that the SON was located in a narrow layer around 1.9 μm under the anode surface. An effective d33 as high as 0.24 pm/v was obtained;a value comparable to that obtained in fused silica samples. The migration of different mobile alkali ions during the poling process was characterized with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that Na was depleted from a region about 3.3 μm beneath the anode surface, while K was first depleted from the immediate region under the anode, and then accumulated in the Na-depleted region with its peak at .8 μm beneath the anode. SEM observation of the cross-section of the poled glass region, after it had been etched in diluted hydrofluoric acid for several minutes, revealed an etched trench, .8 μm under the anode edge and .3 μm in width;while in post-annealed samples, no such etched trench could be observed. A frozen-in space-charge field due to charge migration is believed to be responsible for the creation of the SON and the altered etching rate in the poled region.

AIM: To explore recent trends, modes of diagnosis, ethnic distribution and the mortality to incidence ratio of primary liver cancer by subtypes in England and Wales. METHODS: We obtained incidence(1979-2008) and mortality(1968-2008) data for primary liver cancer for England and Wales and calculated age-standardised incidence and mortality rates. Trends in age-standardised mortality(ASMR) and incidence(ASIR) rates and basis of diagnosis of primary liver cancer and subcategories: hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic bile duct and unspecified liver tumours, were analysed over the study period. Changes in guidelines for the diagnosis of primary liver cancer(PLC) may impact changing trends in the rates that may be obtained. We thus explored changes in the mode of diagnosis as reported to cancer registries. Furthermore, we examined the distribution of these tumours by ethnicity. Most of the statistical manipulations of these data was carried out in Microsoft excel(Seattle, Washington, United Sttaes). Additional epidemiological statistics were done in Epi Info software(Atlanta, GA, United Sttaes). To define patterns of change over time, we evaluated trends in ASMR and ASIR of PLC and intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma(IHBD) using a least squares regression line fitted to the natural logarithm of the mortality and incidence rates. We estimated the patterns of survival over subsequent 5 and 10 years using complement of mortality to incidence ratio(1-MIR). RESULTS: Age-standardised mortality rate of primary liver cancer increased in both sexes: from 2.56 and 1.29/100000 in 1968 to 5.10 and 2.63/100000 in 2008 for men and women respectively. The use of histology for diagnostic confirmation of primary liver cancer increased from 35.7% of registered cases in 1993 to plateau at about 50% during 2005 to 2008. Mitochondrial biogenesis and function in plants require the expression of over 1000 nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins （NGEMPs）. The expression of these genes is regulated by tissue-specific, developmental, internal, and external stimuli that result in a dynamic organelle involved in both metabolic and a variety of signaling processes. Although the metabolic and biosynthetic machinery of mitochondria is relatively well understood, the factors that regu- late these processes and the various signaling pathways involved are only beginning to be identified at a molecular level. The molecular components of anterograde （nuclear to mitochondrial） and retrograde （mitochondrial to nuclear） signaling pathways that regulate the expression of NGEMPs interact with chloroplast-, growth-, and stress-signaling pathways in the cell at a variety of levels, with common components involved in transmission and execution of these signals. This positions mitochondria as important hubs for signaling in the cell, not only in direct signaling of mitochondrial function per se, but also in sensing and/or integrating a variety of other internal and external signals. This integrates and optimizes growth with energy metabolism and stress responses, which is required in both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic cells.

The final analysis of the phase 3 Targeted Investigational Treatment Analysis of Novel Anti-androgen(TITAN)trial showed improvement in overall survival(OS)and other efficacy endpoints with apalutamide plus androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)versus ADT alone in patients with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer(mCSPC).As ethnicity and regional differences may affect treatment outcomes in advanced prostate cancer,a post hoc final analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of apalutamide in the Asian ***-driven endpoints were OS,and time from randomization to initiation of castration resistance,prostate-specific antigen(PSA)progression,and second progression-free survival(PFS2)on first subsequent therapy or *** endpoints were assessed using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional-hazards models without formal statistical testing and adjustment for *** Asian patients received once-daily apalutamide 240 mg(n=111)or placebo(n=110)plus *** a median follow-up of 42.5 months and despite crossover of 47 placebo recipients to open-label apalutamide,apalutamide reduced the risk of death by 32%(hazard ratio[HR]:0.68;95%confidence interval[CI]:0.42–1.13),risk of castration resistance by 69%(HR:0.31;95%CI:0.21–0.46),PSA progression by 79%(HR:0.21;95%CI:0.13–0.35)and PFS2 by 24%(HR:0.76;95%CI:0.44–1.29)relative to *** outcomes were comparable between subgroups with low-and high-volume disease at *** new safety issues were *** provides valuable clinical benefits to Asian patients with mCSPC,with an efficacy and safety profile consistent with that in the overall patient population.
