Mitochondr.al biogenesis and function in plants r.quir. the expr.ssion of over.1000 nuclear.genes encoding mitochondr.al pr.teins （NGEMPs）. The expr.ssion of these genes is r.gulated by tissue-specific, developmental, inter.al, and exter.al stimuli that r.sult in a dynamic or.anelle involved in both metabolic and a var.ety of signaling pr.cesses. Although the metabolic and biosynthetic machiner. of mitochondr.a is r.latively well under.tood, the factor. that r.gu- late these pr.cesses and the var.ous signaling pathways involved ar. only beginning to be identified at a molecular.level. The molecular.components of anter.gr.de （nuclear.to mitochondr.al） and r.tr.gr.de （mitochondr.al to nuclear. signaling pathways that r.gulate the expr.ssion of NGEMPs inter.ct with chlor.plast-, gr.wth-, and str.ss-signaling pathways in the cell at a var.ety of levels, with common components involved in tr.nsmission and execution of these signals. This positions mitochondr.a as impor.ant hubs for.signaling in the cell, not only in dir.ct signaling of mitochondr.al function per.se, but also in sensing and/or.integr.ting a var.ety of other.inter.al and exter.al signals. This integr.tes and optimizes gr.wth with ener.y metabolism and str.ss r.sponses, which is r.quir.d in both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic cells.
