Gestational age-specific neonatal mortality in Hong Kong:a population-based retrospective study

Background The neonatal period is the most vulnerable period during childhood,with the risk of death being the highest even in developed countries/*** Kong’s neonatal mortality(1‰)is among the world’s lowest and has remained similar for 15 *** study aimed to explore neonatal deaths in Hong Kong in detail and determine whether neonatal mortality is reducible at such a low *** Live births in public hospitals in Hong Kong during 01 Jan 2006–31 Dec 2017 were *** data were extracted from the electronic medical *** age-specific mortality was calculated,and the trends were analyzed using the Cochran–Armitage trend *** of death were summarized,and risk factors were identified in multivariate logistic regression *** In 490,034 live births,755 cases(1.54‰)died during the neonatal period,and 293(0.6‰)died during the post-neonatal *** neonatal mortality remained similar overall(P=0.17)and among infants born at 24–29 weeks’gestation(P=0.4),while it decreased in those born at 23(P=0.04),30–36(P<0.001)and≥37(P<0.001)weeks’*** born at<27 weeks’gestation accounted for a significantly increased proportion among cases who died(27.6%to 51.9%),with hemorrhagic conditions(24%)being the leading cause of *** anomalies were the leading cause of death in neonates born≥27 weeks’gestation(52%),but its cause-specific mortality decreased(P=0.002,0.6‰to 0.41‰),with most of the decrease attributed to trisomy 13/18 and multiple *** Reduction of neonatal mortality in developed regions may heavily rely on improved quality of perinatal and neonatal care among extremely preterm infants.

Highly efficient retinal gene delivery with helper-dependent adenoviral vectors

There have been significant advancements in the field of retinal gene therapy in the past several *** particular,therapeutic efficacy has been achieved in three separate human clinical trials conducted to assess the ability of adeno-associated viruses(AAV)to treat of a type of Leber’s congenital amaurosis caused by RPE65 ***,despite the success of retinal gene therapy with AAV,challenges remain for delivering large therapeutic genes or genes requiring long DNA regulatory elements for controlling their *** example,Stargardt’s disease,a form of juvenile macular degeneration,is caused by defects in ABCA4,a gene that is too large to be packaged in ***,we investigated the ability of helper dependent adenovirus(HD-Ad)to deliver genes to the retina as it has a much larger transgene *** an EGFP reporter,our results showed that HD-Ad can transduce the entire retinal epithelium of a mouse using a dose of only 1105 infectious units and maintain transgene expression for at least 4 *** results demonstrate that HD-Ad has the potential to be an effective vector for the gene therapy of the retina.

Background Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is associated with metabolic abnormalities linked to critical elements of *** recently administered combined metabolic activators(CMA)to the AD rat model and observed that CMA improves the AD-associated histological parameters in the *** promotes mitochondrial fatty acid uptake from the cytosol,facilitates fatty acid oxidation in the mitochondria,and alleviates oxidative *** Here,we designed a randomised,double-blinded,placebo-controlled phase-II clinical trial and studied the effect of CMA administration on the global metabolism of AD ***-dose CMA included 12.35 g L-serine(61.75%),1 g nicotinamide riboside(5%),2.55 g N-acetyl-L-cysteine(12.75%),and 3.73 g L-carnitine tartrate(18.65%).AD patients received one dose of CMA or placebo daily during the first 28 days and twice daily between day 28 and day *** primary endpoint was the difference in the cognitive function and daily living activity scores between the placebo and the treatment *** secondary aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of CMA.A comprehensive plasma metabolome and proteome analysis was also performed to evaluate the efficacy of the CMA in AD *** We showed a significant decrease of AD Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale(ADAS-Cog)score on day 84 vs day 0(P=0.00001,29%improvement)in the CMA ***,there was a significant decline(P=0.0073)in ADAS-Cog scores(improvement of cognitive functions)in the CMA compared to the placebo group in patients with higher ADAS-Cog *** cognitive functions in AD patients were supported by the relevant alterations in the hippocampal volumes and cortical thickness based on imaging ***,the plasma levels of proteins and metabolites associated with NAD+and glutathione metabolism were significantly improved after CMA *** Our results indicate that treatment of AD patients with CMA can lead to enhanced cognit

Contributing to a Healthy Older Population of the Future: Investigating the Daily Walking Steps of Working Adults in Hong Kong

Developing a healthy lifestyle during adulthood is one of the essential factors to prepare for healthy aging. This cross-sectional descriptive study investigated the daily walking steps of 893 working adults from nine occupation categories in Hong Kong. Their daily walking steps were measured using a pedometer. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the difference in daily walking steps between participants in different occupation category. Chi-square test was used to compare the difference in proportion of working adults in each occupation category who walked and did not walk 10,000 steps per day. Results reveal that the participants in average walked 8661 steps per day. “Plant and machine operators and assemblers” and “clerks” were the two least active groups. Participants from the nine occupation categories demonstrated a significant difference in the number of daily walking steps. Post hoc analysis revealed a significant difference between “plant and machine operators and assemblers” and “service workers and shop sales workers” (p < 0.01), as well as between “plant and machine operators and assemblers” and “craft and related workers” (p < 0.01). Participants from the nine occupation categories also demonstrated a significant difference in the proportion of those who walked and did not walk 10,000 steps per day. Owing to a large difference in number of participants in the nine occupation categories and other study limitations, further systematic investigation is indicated to confirm the study results. To summarize, working adults in Hong Kong are only somewhat active. Identifying the factors that deter the working adults from walking and the ways to promote walking among working adults is necessary to prepare a healthy older population of the future.

目的对英文版格罗宁根衰弱指标(Groningen Frailty Indicator)进行中文翻译,并测试其语义等价、内容效度和表面效度,验证问卷接受度和理解程度,为评价中国老年人衰弱程度提供量表工具。方法采用Brislin翻译法对英文版格罗宁根衰弱指标进行正向翻译及回译,邀请12名专家应用4分李克特量表,分别对问卷的语义等价以及内容效度进行评价。对通过专家效度评价的量表进行表面效度评价,选取20名不同文化程度老年人,采用访谈的方法测试老年人对问卷的接受和理解程度,并根据老年人对条目的修改建议进行修订,最终形成格罗宁根衰弱指标中文版问卷。结果格罗宁根衰弱指标英文版与回译版的语义表达一致。12名专家效度评价结果为,条目的语义等价等级为83%~100%,量表的语义等价等级为86%~100%;内容效度指数98%,专家效度评价均达到满意的结果。20名参加表面效度评价的老年人(50%为文盲)可以接受和理解格罗宁根衰弱指标中文版问卷的大部分条目,其中接受度为100%;理解度为97%。结论格罗宁根衰弱指标英文版成功汉化,可以作为中国老年人衰弱情况的初步筛查工具。

经呼吸道飞沫传播可能是新型冠状病毒主要的传播途径,佩戴一次性使用医用口罩能有效减少呼吸道传染病人传人的机会,在一次性使用医用口罩缺乏的情况下是否能重复使用是当前公众关注的问题。文章归纳了国内的口罩种类及重复使用的观点及消毒方法,分析了现有消毒方法,包括紫外线、阳光、高温及化学消毒法可能存在的利弊。在新型冠状病毒肺炎疫情影响下,公众可以根据所处的地区、自身的健康情况,以及家庭中一次性使用医用口罩的存储量等情况综合考虑是否重复利用一次性使用医用口罩。

目的探讨新型冠状病毒肺炎流行期间医护人员抑郁倾向的影响因素,为重大公共卫生事件发生时医护人员抑郁倾向的早期识别、早期干预提供依据。方法采用一般资料调查表和患者健康问卷对592名医护人员进行调查,采用Logistic回归分析进行抑郁倾向影响因素分析。结果新型冠状病毒肺炎流行期间医护人员有抑郁倾向为78名,占13.18%,影响医护人员抑郁倾向的因素为个人防护装备是否充足、是否认为容易受感染、是否有类似症状以及是否害怕感染(P<0.05)。结论新型冠状病毒肺炎流行期间医护人员存在抑郁倾向,因此需要多部门合作,为医护人员提供合适的个人防护装备,同时加强各地区医护人员的社会支持与激励,帮助医护人员积极应对,提升心理健康水平。

血管新生在肿瘤性疾病发生过程中发挥重要的作用。以血管新生为靶向的癌肿治疗策略成为近年来的研究热点。我们最近的研究表明，白藜芦醇可调节心肌纤维细胞的分化，阐明了一种新的心脏保护作用机制。白藜芦醇衍生物TMS在多种肿瘤细胞中比白藜芦醇具有更强的抗肿痛活性，在体内、外对新生血管和已形成血管都有很强的作用。近年来，本研究小组利用斑马鱼模型进行了血管新生、神经保护和抗骨质疏松中药活性成分筛选及其作用机理研究。Flil是一个与血管形成有着密切关系的基因，血管的内皮细胞中都有表达。而Tg（Flil-GFP）转基因斑马鱼的基因组中插入了Flil-GFP重组基因序列，在Flil启动子的调控下，这段基因中的绿色荧光蛋白GFP就会表达，使得所有血管的内皮细胞在荧光显微镜下都可发生荧光，可直接观察到斑马鱼血管的生长和变化情沉。这些特点使Tg（Flil-GFP）转基因斑马鱼成为一种非常便捷的促／抗血管新生的体内研究模型。
