DHA （docosahexaenoic acid） and EPA （eicosapentaenoic acid） induced intracellular calcium increase in taste receptor cells purified from mouse circumvallate papillae. We have demonstrated that DHA and EPA induced calcium increase respectively via cPLA2 （cytosolic phospholipase A2） type lVc and calcium independent iPLA2 （phospholipase A2） type VI. Intracellular calcium increases via PLC （phospholipase C） pathway and leads to a calcium effiux and further SOC （stored operated calcium） channels activation. An abundant increase in intracellular calcium will induce exocytosis of neurotransmitters into the extracellular medium. Our results suggest that DHA and EPA induced calcium signaling, and should be implicated in the transmission of lipid gustatory information to afferent nerve fibers, as shown previously with linoleic acid.

Living Environment and Hypercholesterolemia: Case of Mono and Couffo Departments, Benin, in 2015

Introduction: Studies conducted in Benin have often not emphasized the living environment underlying hypercholesterolemia. The objective was to study the prevalence and factors associated with hypercholesterolemia in the Mono and Couffo departments in 2015 with consideration of the living environment. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with an analytical aim that involved 2490 subjects aged 18 - 69 years, selected using a three-stage randomized sampling technique. Data were collected using the Personal Digital Assistant (WHO STEPS instrument) and analyzed according to STEPS recommendations using Epi-Info7.***.5.0 and SPSS20 software. The Chi-square test was used to compare proportions and the difference was considered significant for p Results: Out of 2490 respondents, 60.20% were women. The mean age was 36.14 ± 12.82 years. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 4.7% (95% CI: [3.88 - 5.54]) and lower in the Couffo. Factors associated with hypercholesterolemia after multivariate analysis were harmful alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity and overweight. Conclusions: Living environment was found to be one of the important factors to consider in strategies to control hypercholesterolemia in the Mono and Couffo departments.

Frequency of Hypovitaminosis D in 6 - 59 Month Children with Severe Malaria in the Pediatrics Unit of the Teaching Hospital of Parakou (CHUD/BA) in Benin in 2016

Introduction: Vitamin D’s action outside of bone, especially on immunity, is widely reported in the international scientific literature over the last years. Objective: Calculate the frequency of hypovitaminosis D in children aged 6 to 59 months suffering from severe malaria in the CHUD-P pediatric unit in 2016. Setting and Methods: This research work is a cross-sectional study with descriptive and analytical purposes. Data gathering was prospective. The study involved children aged 6 to 59 months hospitalized for severe malaria in the CHUD-P pediatric unit. The said children were HIV-uninfected, eutrophic and had not received vitamin D supplementation during the last 6 months. Vitamin D dose was measured using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) technique. Results: A total of 80 subjects were involved in the survey. Mean age was 26.08 months, sex ratio was 0.8 and average weight was 10.80 kg. Hypovitaminosis D frequency was 83.8% (67 cases out of 80 children investigated during the survey) with an average plasma concentration of vitamin D estimated at 21.57 ng/ml ± 7.34 with two extremes (11.24 - 42.32) ng/ml. The minimum parasitaemia was 202 P/μl and the maximum was 580,000 P/μl. Conclusion: Hypovitaminosis D is common in children suffering from severe malaria;this result suggests conducting a large-scale community-based study to decide on vitamin D inclusion in national supplementation policies and severe malaria management.

Aims: We aimed at identifying the high-risk HPV genotypes associated with high-grade dysplastic cervical lesions in Burkina Faso. The available vaccines to Burkina Faso only protect against two high risk HPV genotypes: HPV 16 and 18. Are the genotypes identified in the high-grade precan-cerous lesions in this survey covered by the available vaccines? Methods: The detection and genotyping of high-risk HPV have been conducted based on 118 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded archived tissues using the “HPV Genotypes 14 Real-TM Quant” (Sacace biotechnologies®, Italy) kit allowing for the detection of fourteen high-risk HPV genotypes: HPV 16, 31, 18, 39, 45, 59, 33, 35, 56, 68, 51, 52, 58 and 66. Results: The prevalence of high-risk HPV infections was 48.8% based on the appropriate PCR results (21/43). The most common HPV genotypes were HPV 39 (21.7%), HPV 35 (13.0%) and HPV 45 (13.0%). Two cases of multiple infections between HPV 39 - 45 and HPV 39 - 59 have been observed. HPV 16 was not detected in this study. Conclusions: We noted a high prevalence rate for HPV 39, HPV 35 and HPV 45, which are not covered by the commercial vaccines. We also found that the prevalence of HPV 18 was very low in this study and HPV 16 was not detected.

Introduction: In the North-Benin, there are three agents causing pediatric purulent meningitis outside the neonatal period. These are: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae type b. The aim of this research work was to investigate bacteria serotypes that caused childhood purulent meningitis in the pediatric unit of the Borgou à Regional University Teaching Hospital (CHUD-Borgou) located in Parakou (North-Benin). Patients and Methods: Through a prospective and descriptive study centered on children aged 0 to 5 years old suspected of meningitis and hospitalized, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of those children were analyzed at the WHO reference laboratory in Banjul for serotyping by real time polymerase chain reaction (RT/PCR). Results: Among the 1396 children hospitalized during that period, 366 were suspected of meningitis and had benefitted from lumbar puncture. Among those 366 suspected cases, 51 cases of purulent meningitis were confirmed after CSF cytobacteriological and biochemical test at the CHUD-Borgou laboratory. Among 51 CSF samples in which purulent meningitis was confirmed, 44 were sent to Banjul. In addition, 310 CSF samples from non-confirmed cases of meningitis were also sent to Banjul. In the whole set of samples sent for real time PCR, 151 cases of Streptococcus pneumoniae (42.7%) were found, 5 cases of Neisseria meningitidis (1.4%) and 1 case of Haemophilus influenzae (0.3%) were also encountered. As regards Streptococcus pneumonia, the serotypes encountered were: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7F, 8, 9V, 9V/9A, 9N/9L, 14, 18C, 19A, 23F, 33F as well as non typed and non typable serotypes. As for Neisseria meningitidis, only serogroup A was found in it. For Haemophilus influenzae, only serotype b was identified. Conclusion: Four non vaccine serotypes (8, 9V/9A, 9N/9L and 33F), non typed and non typable serotypes which are not covered by 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV 13) were identified. Psycho-Emotional Aspects and Risk Factors Associated with the Onerous Nature of Retirement Concerning Civil Servants within the Public Administration in Parakou (Benin)

Background: In 20% of cases, retirement is experienced as a life event with risk of isolation and loneliness. The objective is to study the psycho-emotional aspects and risk factors associated with civil servants onerous retirement. Methods: It was a descriptive and cross-sectional study which involved 233 pensioners met at the Public Treasury’s Revenue Office in Parakou from June 1 to August 30, 2013. Data were collected through an interview on vulnerability criteria, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale was used in assessing both anxiety level and depressed mood. Results: Pensioners’ average age was 61.1 ± 6.7 years. Males aged 50 to 60 years represented 47.2%. Following the announcement of retirement, 88.9% had feelings of fear, and 75.8% showed moderate to severe anxiety prevalence of which 88.2% were females and 73.9% males. The distribution according to professional categories was as follow: A (77.3%);B (72.6%);C (69.2%);(85.5%);E (85.7%). Retirement risk factors were: dependants (73.1%), age-related disorders (40.3%), lack of health insurance coverage (24.6%) resulting in a depressed mood (36%) strongly associated with a feeling of family and social abandon (87.8% P = 0.02). Conclusion: Depending on job onerousness in each professional category and associated psycho-social risk factors, it is important to implement an adequate action plan in view of promoting pensioners mental health.
