In the present work, potential groundwater pollution by methabenzthiazuron （MTBU） and the effect of three different amendments （composted sheep manure, composted pine bark and spent coffee grounds） on its mobility were investigated under laboratory conditions. The efficiency of ZnO and TiO2 suspensions in the photocatalytic degradation of MTBU in leaching water was also investigated. The relative and cumulative breakthrough curves were obtained from disturbed soil columns. The presence and/or addition of organic matter drastically reduced the movement of the herbicide. On other hand, photocatalytic experiments showed that the addition of ZnO and TiO2 strongly enhances the degradation rate of this herbicide compared with the results of photolytic experiments under artificial light. ZnO appeared to be more effective in MTBU oxidation than TiO2. The results obtained point to the interest of using organic wastes and heterogeneous photocatalysis for reducing the pollution of groundwater by pesticide drainage.

Intact memory function is critical for carrying out daily life activities,such as managing finances,remembering to take medications,driving in familiar environments,remembering a grandchild’s birthday,and learning to use a new computer.However,memory deficits not only accompany normal aging but are also comorbid with many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases.Intellectual disability,autism,attention deficit disorder,learning disability,schizophrenia,and depression all have memory deficit components,as do Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,and other neurodegenerative diseases(Khan et al.,2014).Therefore,a large proportion of the human population is affected by this brain disorder.

针对大规模多入多出(MIMO)系统上行链路非平稳空间相关信道的估计问题,该文利用信道的时间-空间2维稀疏结构信息,应用狄利克雷过程(DP)和变分贝叶斯推理(VBI),设计了一种低导频开销和计算复杂度的信道估计迭代算法,提高了信道估计精度。由于平稳空间相关信道难以适用于大规模MIMO系统,该文借助于狄利克雷过程构建了非平稳空间相关信道先验模型,可将具有空间关联的多个物理信道映射为具有相同时延结构的概率信道,并应用变分贝叶斯推理设计了低导频开销和计算复杂度的信道估计迭代算法。实验结果验证了所提算法的有效性,且具有对系统关键参数鲁棒性的优点。

西花蓟马(缨翅目)是蓟马类中一种具有代表性的植物害虫,是一种能够对作物生产造成不利影响的多食性物种。因此,在欧盟,这些蓟马物种被作为检疫生物进行管理。西花蓟马以易感植物为食,并会传播几种导致严重植物疾病的病毒,从而对这些植物造成非常大的损害。以色列的供应占欧洲新鲜草本市场的50%,被认为是可食用鲜切花的主要供应市场。然而,在过去的十年中,由于没有可选的处理方法来控制检疫害虫而导致植物检疫失败,大大减少了出口量。目前尚无有效的采后杀虫处理方法。众所周知,熏蒸剂甲基溴(MB)具有植物毒性,尤其是对叶类产品和叶片,且与臭氧层的损耗有关。目前甲基溴仅能用作检疫和装运前熏蒸。甲酸乙酯(EF)被建议作为甲基溴的替代品,药效快、价格低廉、哺乳动物无毒性、环境无害、分解迅速,残留量极少或无残留。在以色列进行的30 g/m^(3)甲酸乙酯与二氧化碳(1∶1.6)混合处理不同花种的实验中,在10和15℃条件下分别处理1和1.5 h,对西花蓟马各虫态均有较好的防治效果。在15℃暴露2 h,可杀死全部害虫,对花或其保质期没有不良影响。因此甲酸乙酯熏蒸可作为一种检疫处理方法,也是甲基溴(MB)的可行替代方法。

Rock mass structural recognition from drill monitoring technology in underground mining using discontinuity index and machine learning techniques

A procedure to recognize individual discontinuities in rock mass from measurement while drilling(MWD)technology is developed,using the binary pattern of structural rock characteristics obtained from in-hole images for calibration.Data from two underground operations with different drilling technology and different rock mass characteristics are considered,which generalizes the application of the methodology to different sites and ensures the full operational integration of MWD data analysis.Two approaches are followed for site-specific structural model building:a discontinuity index(DI)built from variations in MWD parameters,and a machine learning(ML)classifier as function of the drilling parameters and their variability.The prediction ability of the models is quantitatively assessed as the rate of recognition of discontinuities observed in borehole logs.Differences between the parameters involved in the models for each site,and differences in their weights,highlight the site-dependence of the resulting models.The ML approach offers better performance than the classical DI,with recognition rates in the range 89%to 96%.However,the simpler DI still yields fairly accurate results,with recognition rates 70%to 90%.These results validate the adaptive MWD-based methodology as an engineering solution to predict rock structural condition in underground mining operations.

Wild populations are continuously subjected to changes in environmental factors that pose different challenges.Body condition and hormones have been commonly used as health indicators due to their potential correlation with fitness.In the present study,we analyzed whether habitats of different quality influenced body mass,food intake and physiological stress levels in wild wood mice(Apodemus sylvaticus).Field work was seasonally carried out in Holm oak woods and pine forests in central Spain.A total of 93 wood mice from 4 different populations(2 per habitat type)were live-trapped.From each captured individual we noted body mass and food intake,measured as the amount of bait remaining in each trap.The physiological stress levels were measured non-inva-sively in collected fresh feces by quantifying fecal corticosterone metabolites(FCM)with a 5a-pregnane-3ß,11ß,21-triol-20-one enzyme immunoassay.Wood mice abundances decreased from spring to summer,were higher in Holm oak woods than in pine forests and also resulted in different age-class distribution between both habitats.Individuals inhabiting pine forests showed a lower body mass and increased food intake,probably because of the comparatively lower food quality and availability in this habitat.Furthermore,these individuals showed increased physiological stress levels,likely due to the lower quality habitat in relation to both food and vegetation cover availability.Overall,besides affecting local wood mouse abundance,our study underscores the effect of habitat quality on body mass,food intake and the endocrine stress response.Considering the wood mouse’s piv-otal position in ecosystems,these results could help in the understanding of environmental traits hampering the viability of wild populations.

Graphene is the stiffest material known so far but, due to its one-atom thickness, it is also very bendable.Consequently, free-standing graphene exhibit ripples that has major effects on its elastic properties. Here we will summarize three experiments where the influence of rippling is essential to address the results. Firstly, we observed that atomic vacancies lessen the negative thermal expansion coefficient(TEC) of free-standing graphene.We also observed an increase of the Young's modulus with global applied strain and with the introduction of small density defects that we attributed to the decrease of rippling. Here, we will focus on a surprising feature observed in the data: the experiments consistently indicate that only the rippling with wavelengths between 5 and 10 nm influences the mechanics of graphene. The rippling responsible of the negative TEC and anomalous elasticity is thought to be dynamic, i.e. flexural phonons. However, flexural phonons with these wavelengths should have minor effects on the mechanics of graphene, therefore other mechanisms must be considered to address our observations. We propose static ripples as one of the key elements to correctly understand the thermomechanics of graphene and suggest that rippling arises naturally due to a competition of symmetry breaking and anharmonic fluctuations.

Infiltration,as a major component of the hydrological cycle,plays an important role in ecosystems,river flooding,and soil erosion.Therefore,this process has been studied on different soils,with different vegetation cover,and under different climate conditions.However,it is still necessary to know how infiltration rates depend on land degradation,vegetation cover,forest management,and forest restoration,since soil infiltration is related to soil hydrological function and hydrological ecosystem services.The aim of our study is to analyze the way reforestation and check dam construction have helped to improve soil infiltration rates in comparison with old,degraded land,different soils and vegetation covers in Central Spain.Therefore,three infiltration tests were carried out by means of a simple methacrylate infiltrometer ring,in four sampling plots,for five types of land use:(i) native holm oak forest,(ii) 60-year-old reforested pine wood,(iii) shrubs,(iv) sediment wedges of check dams,and(v) gullies and degraded hillslopes.Our results show much higher infiltration rates in the soil of 60-yearold pine reforestation sites(1198.00 mm·h^(-1)),and in the sediment wedges of check dams(1088.00 mm·h^(-1)),than in those of degraded hillslopes(365.00 mm·h^(-1)) and shrubland(420.80 mm·h^(-1)).The rates were also shown to be close to those from the remaining patches of native holm oak woodland(770.40 mm·h^(-1)).We also found that organic matter,humus and litter depth,and height of vegetation and cover,all improve soil infiltration rates,while slope degree,presence of coarse elements,stoniness,clay content,bulk density,and electric conductivity inhibit the rates.It was additionally seen that pine reforestation and check dam construction caused degraded land to recover its hydrological conditions to a level that is quite close to that of the ancient oak holm native forest,alongside ameliorating the hydrological cycle in the watershed.This information will be very useful for decisionmaking processes related to land restoration p

BACKGROUnD The implementation of optical diagnosis(OD) of diminutive colorectal lesions in clinical practice has been hampered by differences in performance between community and academic settings. One possible cause is the lack of a standardized learning tool. Since the factors related to better learning are not well described, strong evidence upon which a consistent learning tool could be designed is lacking. We hypothesized that a self-designed learning program may be enough to achieve competency in OD of diminutive lesions of the colon.AIM To assess the accuracy of OD of diminutive lesions in real colonoscopies after application of a self-administered learning program.METHODS This was a single-endoscopist prospective pilot study, in which an experienced endoscopist followed a self-designed, self-administered learning program in OD of colorectal lesions. An assessment phase divided in two halves with a 6-mo period in between without performance of OD was developed in a populationbased colorectal cancer screening program. The accomplishment of the Preservation and Incorporation of Valuable Endoscopic Innovations criteria and performance measures were calculated overall and in the two halves of the assessment phase, assessing their response to the 6-mo stopping period. The evolution of performance through blocks of 50 lesions was also assessed.RESULTS Overall, 152 patients and 522 lesions(≤ 5 mm: 399, and 6-9 mm: 123) were included. The negative predictive value for the OD of adenoma in rectosigmoid lesions diagnosed with high confidence was 91.7% [95% confidence interval(CI):87.3-96.6]. The proportion of agreement on surveillance interval between OD and pathological diagnosis was higher than 95%. Overall accuracy for diminutive lesions diagnosed with high confidence was 89.5%(95%CI: 86.3-92.7). The overall accuracy of OD was similar in the two halves of the assessment phase [90.1(95%CI: 85.6-94.7) vs 88.2(95%CI: 87.9-95.9)]. Background:Determining the prevalence of doping in sport might be useful for anti-doping authorities to gauge the effectiveness of anti-doping policies implemented to prevent positive attitudes toward doping.Using questionnaires and personal interviews,previous investigations have found that the prevalence of doping might be different among different sports disciplines;however,there is no sport-specific information about the proportion of adverse and atypical findings(AAF) in samples used for doping control.The aim of the present investigation was to assess the differences in the frequency of adverse analytical and atypical findings among sports using the data made available by the World Anti-Doping Agency.Methods:The data included in this investigation were gathered from the Testing Figures Reports made available annually from 2003 to 2015 by the World Anti-Doping Agency.These Testing Figures Reports include information about the number of samples analyzed,the number of AAFs reported,and the most commonly found drugs in the urine and blood samples analyzed.A total of 1,347,213 samples were analyzed from the individual sports selected for this investigation,and 698,371 samples were analyzed for disciplines catalogued as team sports.Results:In individual sports,the highest proportions of AAF were 3.3%±1.0% in cycling,3.0%±0.6% in weightlifting,and 2.9%±0.6% in boxing.In team sports,the highest proportions of AAF were 2.2%±0.5% in ice hockey,2.0%±0.5% in rugby,and 2.0%±0.5% in basketball.Gymnastics and skating had the lowest proportions at(≤1.0%) for individual sports,and field hockey,volleyball and football had the lowest proportions for team sports(≤1.4%).Conclusion:As suggested by the analysis,the incidence of AAF was not uniform across all sports disciplines,with the different proportions pointing to an uneven use of banned substances depending on the sport.This information might be useful for increasing the strength and efficacy of anti-doping policies in those sports with the highest prevalence in the use of
