The current study aims to do a comparative analysis of the results obtained with two End-Member(EM)grain-size modeling techniques(Analy Size and Bas EMMA) and the Environmental Sensitive Grain-Size(ESGS) modeling for sediment samples collected in the mudbelts of the southern Brazilian shelf. The methods were compared using grain-size data from the south Brazilian shelf, and the results are discussed here. It is the first time that the concept of ESGS, in its present form, is utilized outside China. The results show that despite its relative ease of use, the ESGS is not fully comparable to the EM analyses, and only two grain-size ESGS classes were recognized as analogous to EMs. The comparison of the Analy Size and Bas EMMA procedures also revealed significant differences between the techniques. A comparative analysis between the two EM techniques revealed advantages in the Bas EMMA, especially in the better correlation of the end-members with the original grain size distribution. The analysis of the geographical distribution of the EM abundances allowed point sources of sandy populations to be recognized as well as the contribution of the Rio de la Plata as a source of silty sediments to be inferred.

The Capim River drainage should be considered small and thin by comparison with large Amazonian rivers. It rises by confluence of the Surubiú and Ararandeua rivers near 400 m high and their headwaters would be comfortably included in the Dry Emerged Lowland (terra firme) forest area of Sternberg’s Amazonian concept. Because of this reason the freshwater fish fauna of Capim River is comprised mainly by Amazonian fish families found in tributaries also with origin in terra firme areas. The ichthyofauna from the main channel of the poorly sampled Capim River, in the stretch between its confluence with Tauarí River and its mouth at Guamá River, is herein reported by way of rapid assessment. Also broad comparisons were made among freshwater fishes of the Capim with that from Tocantins and Guamá rivers. Two rapid access research surveys of collecting ichthyological material were performed in dry and humid periods of the year 1998 comprising the regional hydrologic cycle. The ichthyological diversity showed by the 461 studied specimens includes 79 species probably derived from Guamá and Tocantins rivers. These species are distributed between two situations: 1) downstream Capim River, at confluence with Guamá River, where is under tidal waters influence and periodically flooded, and 2) upriver Capim that is less humid and with water rapids, independent from sea hydrologic influence. This fish fauna includes local species common at high areas of the Amazonian Dry Emerged Lowland that are in part shared with that from Tocantins River. In view of these observations, we assume that the Capim River freshwater ichthyofauna may reflect diverse origin from the simple transfer of populations from Guamá River, but originate through a more complex process including the past ichthyofauna of the earlier drainages of terra firme forest and their reorganization.

Background： Brazil is among the nations with the greatest rates of annual cocaine usage. Pharmacological treatment of cocaine addiction is still limited, opening space for nonconventional *** Q-potencies of opium and Erythroxylum coca have been tested in the integrative treatment of cocaine craving among homeless addicts, but this setting had not proven feasible, due to insufficient ***： This study investigates the effectiveness and tolerability of homeopathic Q-potencies of opium and E. coca in the integrative treatment of cocaine craving in a community-based psychosocial rehabilitation ***, setting, participants, and interventions： A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallelgroup, eight-week pilot trial was performed at the Psychosocial Attention Center for Alcohol and Other Drugs（CAPS-AD）, Sao Carlos/SP, Brazil. Eligible subjects included CAPS-AD patients between 18 and 65 years of age, with an International Classification of Diseases-10 diagnosis of cocaine dependence（F14.2）. The patients were randomly assigned to two treatment groups： psychosocial rehabilitation plus homeopathic Q-potencies of opium and E. coca（homeopathy group）, and psychosocial rehabilitation plus indistinguishable placebo（placebo group）.Main outcome measures： The main outcome measure was the percentage of cocaine-using days. Secondary measures were the Minnesota Cocaine Craving Scale and 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey *** events were reported in both ***： The study population comprised 54 patients who attended at least one post-baseline assessment,out of the 104 subjects initially enrolled. Background: Coupling biomass models with nutrient concentrations can provide sound estimations of carbon and nutrient contents, enabling the improvement of carbon and nutrient balance in forest ecosystems. Although nutrient concentrations are often assumed to be constant for some species and specific tree components, at least in mature stands,the concentrations usually vary with age, site index and even with tree density. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the sources of variation in nutrient concentrations in biomass compartments usually removed during harvesting operations, covering a range of species and management conditions: semi-natural forest, conventional forest plantations and short rotation forestry(SRF). Five species(Betula pubescens, Quercus robur, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens and Populus spp.) and 14 genotypes were considered. A total of 430 trees were sampled in 61 plots to obtain 6 biomass components:leaves, twigs, thin branches, thick branches, bark and wood. Aboveground leafless biomass was pooled together *** concentrations of C, N, K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B were measured and the total biomass of each sampled tree and plot were determined. The data were analysed using boosted regression trees and conventional ***: The main sources of variation in nutrient concentrations were biomass component > > genotype(species) ≈ age >tree diameter. The concentrations of Ca, Mg and K were most strongly affected by genotype and age. The concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, S and Cu in the wood component decreased with age, whereas C concentrations increased, with a trend to reach 50% in the older trees. In the SRF, interamerican poplar and P. trichocarpa genotypes were comparatively more efficient in terms of Ca and K nutrient assimilation index(NAI)(+65-85%) than eucalypts, mainly because leafless biomass can be removed. Comparison of Different Washing and Disinfection Protocols Used by Food Services in Southern Brazil for Lettuce (<i>Lactuca sativa</i>)

Different protocols have been used for washing and disinfecting leafy vegetables in Brazilian food services, however its effect on microbial reduction was barely studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of lettuce washing and disinfecting protocols used by food services. The treatments evaluated were: washing in potable tap water (T1);washing and dipping in potable tap water (T2);washing with potable tap water and dipping in a solution of sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm of free chlorine) for 15 min (T3);and 30 min (T4);washing with potable tap water and dipping in 2% vinegar solution (T5);and 20% vinegar solution (T6). After the treatments, the samples were microbiologically evaluated to measure bacterial reductions. The microbial counts showed that the mean total mesophile reductions were: 0.64 log for T1, 0.75 log for T2, 2.06 log for T3, 2.46 log for T4, 1.68 log for T5 and 1.72 log for T6, and the mean total coliform reductions were: 1.11 log for T1, 1.09 log for T2, 2.29 log for T3, 2.35 log for T4, 1.6 log for T5 and 2.09 log for T6. Based on these results it can be concluded that protocols which used 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite for 15 to 30 min (T3 e T4), were the most effective, followed by treatment with 20% vinegar solution (T6). The latter method, however, turned the lettuce dark during the distribution period.

Electrochemical treatment is an alternative modality for tumor treatment based on the application of a low intensity direct electric current to the tumor tissue through two or more platinum electrodes placed within the tumor zone or in the surrounding areas. This treatment is noted for its great effectiveness, minimal invasiveness and local effect. Several studies have been conducted worldwide to evaluate the anfitumoral effect of this therapy. In all these studies a variety of biochemical and physiological responses of tumors to the applied treatment have been obtained. By this reason, researchers have suggested various mechanisms to explain how direct electric current destroys tumor ceils. Although, it is generally accepted this treatment induces electrolysis, electroosmosis and electroporation in tumoral tissues. However, action mechanism of this alternative modality on the tumor tissue is not well understood. Although the principle of Electrochemical treatment is simple, a standardized method is not yet available. The mechanism by which Electrochemical treatment affects tumor growth and survival may represent more complex process. The present work analyzes the latest and most important research done on the electrochemical treatment of tumors. We conclude with our point of view about the destruction mechanism features of this alternative therapy. Also, we suggest some mechanisms and strategies from the thermodynamic point of view for this therapy. In the area of Electrochemical treatment of cancer this tool has been exploited very little and much work remains to be done. Electrochemical treatment constitutes a good therapeutic option for patients that have failed the conventional oncology methods.

This study aims at verifying the learning of adolescent students about the disabled person using educational technology in the board game mode and using a semi-experimental non-randomized study of pre and post with unintentional probability sample. Validated and standardized instruments were used. Data were processed by SPSS 20.0 and organized in tables. For comparison of proportions, the McNemar test was used. Females predominated (56%), aged between 13 and 14 years old (63.3%) from private schools (58.7%). It was evidenced a significance for learning about visual and hearing impairment on issues of low complexity (p des reflection on the theme, contributes to learning and encourages inclusion.

Socio-Economic Profile of People with Disabilities: A Health Impact

The objective was to compare the socioeconomic profile and the repercussions for effects on the health of people with physical, hearing and visual of the main Ceará state associations in Brazil. Quantitative study carried out from March to August 2012 through a structured questionnaire with 120 subjects. Variables were: gender, age, education, family income and marital status. Studies are necessary to examine the effects of sociodemographic characteristics on health. The results indicate that the three deficiencies have different distributions in all age groups (p = 0.001), and auditory and visual obtained the highest percentage in the age group of 18 - 29 years (67.5% and 40%, respectively), while motor in the range of 30 - 49 (60%), if no association between level of education and disability was found (p = 0.553). Family income showed a statistically significant difference between disability (p = 0.044), with lower income in hearing loss (45%) and higher in the visual (42.5%). Studies have demonstrated that people with disabilities are not homogeneous. It is important to examine socioeconomic indicators, and individual needs and characteristics to plan effective action.
