This research work was carried out with the aim of continuing to expand knowledge on the behaviour of AIsI 304 stainless steel against solid particle erosion. In this particular case, the steel was subjected to the impact of alumina particles, which are hard abrasives with irregular and angular shapes. Different characterization techniques were applied to gain a better understanding of alumina. For instance, particle size distribution was obtained using the Analysette 28 Image sizer and the particle size was between 300 - 400 µm. sEM and EDs analysis were used to know the morphology and chemical composition of both the abrasive particles and AIsI 304 stainless steel. Additionally, mechanical properties values such as the hardness and young’s modulus of AIsI 304 steel were attained using a Berkovich indenter (model TTX-NHT, CsM Instruments). On the other hand, two tests were carried out for each impact angle used, 30˚, 45˚, 60˚ and 90˚, with a particle velocity of 24 ± 2 m/s and an abrasive flow rate of 63 ± 0.5 g/min, employing a test rig based on AsTM G76-95 standard. sEM images using two detectors, Backscattered Electron Detector (BED) and Low Electron Detector (LED), were employed to identify the wear mechanisms on the AIsI 304 eroded surfaces at 30˚ and 90˚. Finally, the erosion rates of AIsI 304 compared to those results reached by AIsI 1018 steel and AIsI 420 stainless steel tested under identical conditions in previous works.

Background:Identification of relevant in vivo biomarkers for fertility remains a challenge for the livestock *** of the small peptide hormone oxytocin(OXT),involved in male reproductive function and present in the seminal plasma(sP)of several species could be a robust *** study characterized concentrations of sPOXT in ejaculates from boars used in artificial insemination(AI)programs aiming to evaluate its relationship with sperm quality variables and in vivo fertility of their liquid-stored *** OXT concentrations(ng/mL)were measured in 169 ejaculates from 61 boars of the Duroc,Pietrain,Landrace and Large White breeds using a direct competitive immunoassay test based on AlphaLIsA®***(ejaculate volume,sperm concentration,total sperm count)and sperm parameters(motility,viability,intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species,plasma membrane fluidity)were assessed at 0 h and 72 h in AI-semen samples stored at 17℃.In vivo fertility included only 18 Large White and Landrace boars whose AI-semen was used to inseminated>100 sows and evaluated both farrowing rate and litter size of 3,167 ***:The results showed that sP-OXT differed between boars and between ejaculates within boar(Ps(Duroc,Pietrain,Landrace and Large White).Ejaculates with higher sP-OXT concentration/mL(hierarchically grouped;Pyounger boars(Ps of boars showing positive farrowing rate deviation exhibited higher(PsP-OXT concentration/mL than those with negative farrowing rate ***:The sP concentrations of OXT are boar,ejaculate and age dependent,and positively related with ejaculate volume and farrowing rates of liquid-stored semen AI-doses.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC) is one of the most lethal malignancies with a five-year survival rate of approximately 5%. several target agents have been tested in PDAC, but almost all have failed to demonstrate efficacy in late phase clinical trials, despite the better understanding of PDAC molecular biology generated by large cancer sequencing initiatives in the past decade. Eroltinib(a small-molecule tyrosine-kinase inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor) plus gemcitabine is the only schedule with a biological agent approved for advanced pancreatic cancer, but it has resulted in a very modest survival benefit in unselected patients. In our work, we report a summary of the main clinical trials(closed and ongoing) that refer to biological therapy evaluation in pancreatic cancer treatment.

Magnetic resonance imaging markers for early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease

Parkinson＇s disease （PD） is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by selective and progressive degeneration, as well as loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. In PD, approximately 60-70% of nigrostriatal neurons are degenerated and 80% of content of the striatal dopamine is reduced before the diagnosis can be established according to widely accepted clinical diagnostic criteria. This condition describes a stage of disease called ＂prodromal＂, where non-motor symptoms, such as olfactory dysfunction, constipation, rapid eye movement behaviour disorder, depression, precede motor sign of PD. Detection of prodromal phase of PD is becoming an important goal for determining the prognosis and choosing a suitable treatment strategy. In this review, we present some non-invasive instrumental approaches that could be useful to identify patients in the prodromal phase of PD or in an early clinical phase, when the first motor symptoms begin to be apparent. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） and advanced MRI techniques, such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging, diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging and functional MRI, are useful to differentiate early PD with initial motor symptoms from atypical parkinsonian disorders, thus, making easier early diagnosis. Functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging techniques can show abnormalities in the olfactory system in prodromal PD.

The likely impact of genetically modified soybeans in the Brazilian collective feeding service

Objective: To expose the likely impact of genetically modified foods in Collective Feeding. Methods: This was a case study conducted on a steel company (sC) in Rio de Janeiro state. The likely impact recognition began with the preparation of a soy food products’ list. Then, we verified these products’ frequency on the Food and Nutrition Unit (FNU) menu from the sC, outlining the offer profile. We calculated odds ratios and binomial distribution probability for assessing exposure to soy that may be transgenic. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) regarding soy products was applied. The convergence of daily products’ relative frequency of this population and the population from a reference study about FFQ validation in Rio de Janeiro was verified. Confrontation took place between the classification of foods by the consumers’ likely exposure to soy and the percentage deviation between observed relative frequency of products’ intake offered on the FNU and on the reference study. Results: A list of 51 products were created and 16 of them integrated the menu, e.g. flour, chicken, sausage, maize, instant pudding, bologna, hot dogs and peanuts. Food usually consumed by FNU users and concomitantly consumed in reference study were cookies, flour, spaghetti, bread, cake, instant pudding, sausage and hot dogs. By the classification and percentage deviations results, cookies, breads and pasta were the “villains” of soy’s susceptibility. Coclusion: It was possible to show the likely impact of genetically modified foods in Collective Feeding, confirming that these consumers were exposed to soybeans that may be transgenic.

背景：长QT综合征（long QT syndrome，LQTs）的严重程度及其对治疗的反应因致病遗传位点而异。因此，我们迫切需要建立一种能快速进行遗传学分析的方法。目的：对LQTs患者进行筛查，确定遗传学检测方法、突变类型及发生率。设计、患者及地点：于1996年7月至2004年7月连续对430例患者进行遗传学检测，确定KCNQ1、KCNH2和sCN5A基因高频率突变密码子的检出是否可以成为一种新型、快速、高效基因分型策略。利用变性高效液相色谱法和DNA测序法筛查KCNQ1、KCNH2、sCN5A、KCNE1和KCNE2基因的全部编码区。确定突变的频率和类型，找出重复突变。另有一组连续75例先证者作为验证组，以便在前述LQTs人群中对检出重复突变的发生率进行前瞻性定量分析。主要观测指标：提出一种新型LQTs基因分型法。结果：在430例先证者（KCNQ149％、KCNH239％、sCA5A10％、KCNE11．7％、KCNE20．75％）中，有310例（72％）共检出235种不同的突变，其中138种为新的突变。58％的先证者在KCNQ1、KCNH2和sCA5A基因64种密码子携带非个人突变。在75例前瞻性先证队列和以往报告的LQTs队列中亦于这些密码子（52％）证实相似的突变发生率。结论：我们提出了一种改进LQTs遗传突变筛查效果的方法，这种新方法拓展了基因分型的范围，可使我们更好地对LQTs患者进行危险分层和治疗。
