Unifying concepts in methanogenic,aerobic,and anammox sludge granulation

The retention of dense and well-functioning microbial biomass is crucial for effective pollutant removal in several biological wastewater treatment *** solids retention is often achieved through aggregation of microbial communities into dense,spherical aggregates known as granules,which were initially discovered in the *** granules have since been widely applied in upflow anaerobic digesters for waste-to-energy ***,granul.r biomass has been applied in aerobic wastewater treatment and anaerobic ammonium oxidation(anammox)*** mechanisms underpinning the formation of methanogenic,aerobic,and anammox granules are the subject of ongoing *** each granule type has been extensively studied in isolation,there has been a lack of comparative studies among these granulation *** is likely that there are some unifying concepts that are shared by all three sludge *** these unifying concepts could allow a unified theory of granulation to be ***,we review the granulation mechanisms of methanogenic,aerobic,and anammox granul.r sludge,highlighting several common concepts,such as the role of extracellul.r polymeric substances,cations,and operational parameters like upflow velocity and shear *** have then identified some unique features of each granule type,such as different internal structures,microbial compositions,and quorum sensing ***,we propose that future research should prioritize aspects of microbial ecology,such as community assembly or interspecies interactions in individual granules during their formation and growth.

The results obtained from two expeditions to survey the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Central Chile are reported in this *** surveys were carried out as part of Global Biodiversity of Eumycetozoans project funded by the National Science Foundation(USA)and the Myxotropic project funded by the Spanish *** expeditions were made to the temperate zone of the central part of the country between 23°and 39°South latitudes,which is characterized by Mediterranean vegetation,as well as to the transition areas between the arid and semi-arid regions of northern Chile,and the humid,cold Valdivian and Andean-Patagonian forests of the far *** of the fifteen regions of the country,from Antofagasta to Araucanía,in selected areas where the native vegetation is well preserved,were included in these *** 600 collections were obtained,and a total of 110 species of myxomycetes representing 29 genera have been *** of these(Dianema succulenticola,Didymium chilense)are species new to science and are described in this paper,12 species(Coll.ria nigricapillitia,Comatricha alta,Cribraria oregana,Dianema depressum,Didymium eximium,***,Enerthenema melanospermum,lepidoderma chailletii,Macbrideola ovoidea,Physarum clavisporum,*** and Trichia alpina)were previously unknown for either the Neotropics or South America,and 49 additional species are new records for *** are provided on the morphology,distribution and ecology of selected species and light and SEM micrographs of the most significant species are *** evaluation of the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Chile,with special emphasis on the endemic plants that provided the substrates with which they were associated,and a comparative analysis of our results with those from other countries of South America is presented.

Human CD4 ＋ effector T lymphocytes generated upon TCr engagement with self-peptides respond defectively to Il-7 in their transition to memory cells

The peripheral.repertoire of CD4＋ T lymphocytes contains autoreactive cells that remain tol.rant through several mechanisms. However, nonspecific CD4＋ T cells can be activated in physiological conditions as in the course of an ongoing immune response, and their outcome is not yet fully understood. Here, we investigate the fate of human naive CD4＋ lymphocytes activated by dendritic cells （DCs） presenting endogenous self-peptides in comparison with lymphocytes involved in all.responses. We generated memory cells （Tmem） from primary effectors activated with mature autologous DCs plus interleukin （Il）-2 （Tmauto）, simulating the circumstances of an active immune response, or allogeneic DCs （Tmallo）. Tmem were generated from effector cells that were rested in the absence of antigenic stimuli, with or without Il-7. Tmem were less activated than effectors （demonstrated by CD25 downregulation） particul.rly with Il-7, suggesting that this cytokine may favour the transition to quiescence. Tmauto and TmaHo showed an effector memory phenotype, and responded simil.rly to polyclonal and antigen-specific stimuli. Biochemically, Il-7-treated Tma^o were closely related to conventional memory lymphocytes based on Erk-l/2 activation, whereas Tmauto were more simil.r to effectors. Autologous effectors exhibited lower responses to Il-7 than allogeneic cells, which were reflected in their reduced proliferation and higher cell death. This was not related to Il-7 receptor expression but rather to signalling deficiencies, according to STAT5 activation These results suggest that ineffective responses to Il-7 could impair the transition to memory cells of naive CD4＋ T lymphocytes recognizing self-peptides in the setting of strong costimulation.

Background:The corneal cross-linking(CXl)photochemical.reaction is essentially dependent on oxygen and hypothermia,which usually leads to higher dissolved oxygen levels in tissues,with potentially greater oxygen availability for ***,we evaluate whether a reduction of corneal temperature during CXl may increase oxygen availability and therefore enhance the CXl biomechanical stiffening effect in ex vivo porcine ***:One hundred and twelve porcine corneas had their epithelium manually debrided before being soaked with 0.1%hypo-osmol.ric *** corneas were equally assigned to one of four *** 2 and 4 underwent accel.rated epithelium-off CXl using 9 mW/cm^(2) irradiance for 10 min,performed either in a cold room temperature(group 2,4℃)or at standard room temperature(group 4,24℃).Groups 1 and 3 served as non-crosslinked,temperature-matched *** a stress-strain extensometer,the elastic moduli of 5-mm wide corneal strips were analyzed as an indicator of corneal ***:Accel.rated epithelium-off CXl led to significant increases in the elastic modulus between 1 and 5%of strain when compared to non-cross-linked controls(Pr,no significant difference was found between control groups(P=0.846)or between groups in which CXl was performed at low or standard room temperature(P=0.969).Conclusions:Although initial oxygen availability should be increased under hypothermic conditions,it does not appear to play a significant role in the biomechanical strengthening effect of epithelium-off CXl accel.rated protocols in ex vivo porcine corneas.

Ecological succession of benthic organisms on niche-type artificial.reefs

As part of efforts to restore fishery resources and recover damaged coastal ecosystems,artificial.reefs are often anchored on the seafloor in coastal zones,to provide new habitats for marine *** aim of the study was to describe the structure of a community of benthic invertebrates colonising a niche-type artificial.reef(AATN in Spanish).Nine structures were anchored at depths of 16±1.5 m for 99 weeks(22 months)in the Area of Benthic resource Management and Exploitation(AMErB)in coastal waters of the region of Bio Bio,*** results showed that,at 3 months from submersion of the NTAr,much of the artificial substrate remained bare and there were only low levels of specimens of Balanus ***,showing mean coverage of 11.26%,and even lower proportions of rhodophyta,with mean coverage of 0.34%.At 6 months,the presence of hydrozoans was seen,decreasing the coverage of the barnacles,which was aided further at 8 months with the arrival of barnacle predatory *** 8 months,new benthic invertebrates appeared and competed for the *** included sponges and *** 99 weeks,the hydrozoans dominated the substrate,followed by barnacles and rhodophyta,the first colonising organisms,leading to colonisation by motile macro-invertebrates,mainly consisting of crustaceans,echinoderms and *** AATN artificial system provides an ideal substrate for the development of early ecological succession and the use of this technology should be feasible in the recovery process of habitat damaged by anthropogenic actions and climate change.

The genus Saraca l.(leguminosae)is a universal panacea in herbal *** present study investigates the comparative pollen morphology of four species of Saraca ***(roxb.)de Wilde,***(Jack)Miq.,*** l.,and *** Cantley ex Prain growing in India to reveal differences of their pollen structures to aid taxonomic and evolutionary *** detailed morphology and surface structure of pollen grains were studied and described using light microscopy and scanning electron *** pollen grains of Saraca showed isopol.r,para-syncolporate,tricolporate,with radially symmetric,prolate and prolate-spheroidal *** surface of pollen of *** is rugulate with l.rge l.rae but in ***,the surface is micro-rugulate to vermiculate with relatively thin l.rae and that of *** is indistinct as the psilate surface with a frequent protuberance and fewer perforations were observed along with the gemmae like *** ornamentation helped to separate *** and *** thickness varies from 3-4μ*** of protuberance and exine thickness varies among individuals of the species spread over different *** work also provides a unique palynological identity and interrelationship of these four species based on cluster analysis taking 23 pollen characters with the help of statistical method like the plotting of ternary *** plots also helped to calculate the level of plasticity of each character in the intra-and inter-specific level.

Adverse hepatic reactions associated with calcium carbimide and disulfiram therapy: Is there still a role for these drugs?

Disulfiram and calcium carbimide are two alcohol deterrants widely used in alcoholism treatment, however, there exist great concerns over their safety. reports on hepatotoxicity, mainly related to disulfiram therapy, have been published. The hepatotoxic potential of calcium carbimide is less well characterized. Here, we describe four cases of liver damage related to this therapeutic group that were submitted to a registry of hepatotoxicity and point out the limitations that we face when prescribing these compounds. A reassessment of the role of these compounds in the management of alcohol dependence is clearly needed.
