Inflammatory bowel disease serology in Asia and the West

AIM:To study serological antibodies in caucasians and Asians,in health and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),in Australia and Hong Kong(HK).METHODS:Anti-glycan antibodies[anti-chitobioside(AccA),anti-laminaribioside(ALcA)],and anti-mannobioside(AMcA),anti-Saccharomyces cervisiae(gAScA);and atypical perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody(pANcA)were tested in IBD patients,their unaffected relatives,and healthy controls in Australia and HK(china).Antibody status(positive or negative)and titre was compared between subjects of different geography,ethnicity and disease ***:Ninety subjects were evaluated:21 crohn’s disease(cD),32 ulcerative colitis(Uc),29 healthy controls,and 8 IBD patient *** eight subjects were Australian(29 caucasian and 19 ethnic Han chinese)and 42 were from HK(all Han chinese).caucasian cD patients had a significantly higher antibody prevalence of gAScA(67%vs 3%,PcA(44%vs 6%,P=0.005),and AMcA(67%vs 15%,P=0.002),whereas HK cD patients had a higher prevalence of only AMcA(58%vs 25%,P=0.035),when compared with Uc and healthy subjects in both *** cD had significantly higher gAScA prevalence(67%vs 0%,PcD *** and titres of ALcA,AccA and AMcA did not differ between cD in the two *** of at least one antibody was higher in caucasian than HK cD patients(100%vs 58%,P=0.045).pANcA did not differ between countries or ***:Serologic cD responses differ between HK Asian and Australian caucasian *** genetic,environmental or disease pathogenic factors may account for these differences.

Anisotropic transport of microalgae chlorella vulgaris in microfluidic channel

In this work, we study the regional dependence of transport behavior of microalgae chlorella vulgaris inside microflu- idic channel on applied fluid flow rate. The microalgae are treated as spherical naturally buoyant particles. Deviation from the normal diffusion or Brownian transport is characterized based on the scaling behavior of the mean square displacement （MSD） of the particle trajectories by resolving the displacements in the streamwise （flow） and perpendicular directions. The channel is divided into three different flow regions, namely center region of the channel and two near-wall boundaries and the particle motions are analyzed at different flow rates. We use the scaled Brownian motion to model the transitional characteristics in the scaling behavior of the MSDs. We find that there exist anisotropic anomalous transports in all the three flow regions with mixed sub-diffusive, normal and super-diffusive behavior in both longitudinal and transverse directions.

This paper presents an adaptive human-machine interface(HMI)that can provide appropriate sets of digital maintenanceinformation and guidance to an operator during *** takes into consideration the expertise level of the operator and the maintenance context and *** proposed human-centric methodology considers the heart rate,intention,and expertise level of the operator,which can be captured using sensors during maintenance.A set of rules is formulated based on the sensor data to infer the state of the operator during a maintenance *** on the operator state,the adaptive HMI can augment the operator's senses using a scheme that combines visual,audio,and haptic guidance cues during maintenance to enhance the operator's ability to perceive information and perform maintenance *** schemes of visual,audio,and haptic cues are developed based on a comparison of the best practices obtained from experienced operators.

A novel cARD containing splice-isoform of cIITA regulates nitric oxide synthesis in dendritic cells

MHc class II expression is controlled mainly at transcriptional level by class II transactivator(cIITA),which is a non-DNA binding coactivator and serves as a master control factor for MHc class II genes ***,we describe the function of a novel splice-isoform of cIITA,Dc-expressed caspase inhibitory isoform of cIITA(or Dc-cASPIc),and we show that the expression of DccASPIc in Dc is upregulated upon lipopolysaccharides(LPS)***-cASPIc localizes to mitochondria,and protein-protein interaction study demonstrates that Dc-cASPIc interacts with caspases and inhibits its activity in ***,Dc-cASPIc suppresses caspases-induced degradation of nitric oxide synthase-2(NOS2)and subsequently promotes the synthesis of nitric oxide(NO).NO is an essential regulatory molecule that modulates the capability of Dc in stimulating T cell proliferation/activation in vitro;hence,overexpression of Dc-cASPIc in Dc enhances this ***,our findings reveal that Dc-cASPIc is a key molecule that regulates caspases activity and NO synthesis in Dc.

This study develops a novel cervical precancerous detection system by using texture analysis of field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM)*** processing scheme adopted in the proposed system focused on two *** first step was to enhance cervical cell FE-SEM images in order to show the precancerous characterization indicator.A problem arises from the question of how to extract features which characterize cervical precancerous *** the first step,a preprocessing technique called intensity transformation and morphological operation(ITMO)algorithm used to enhance the quality of images was *** algo-rithm consisted of contrast stretching and morphological opening *** second step was to characterize the cervical cells to three classes,namely normal,low grade intra-epithelial squamous lesion(LSIL),and high grade intra-epithelial squamous lesion(HSIL).To differen-tiate between normal and precancerous cells of the cervical cell FE-SEM images,human papillomavirus(HPV)contained in the surface of cells were used as *** this paper,we investigated the use of texture as a tool in determining precancerous cell images based on the observation that cell images have a distinct visual *** level co-occurrences matrix(GLcM)technique was used to extract the texture *** confirm the system's perfor-mance,the system was tested using 150 cervical cell FE-SEM *** results showed that the accuracy,sensitivity and specificity of the proposed system are 95.7%,95.7%and 95.8%,respectively.

Effects of elevated temperatures on growth and photosynthetic performance of polar chlorella

Global warming has been the subject of concern in today’s world with elevating temperature causing the melting of polar ice and increasing sea *** aim of this study was to investigate the physiological and photosynthetic performance of two polar chlorella,namely chlorella UMAcc 250 and chlorella UMAcc 234 to elevating temperatures as might be experienced under future warming *** cultures were exposed to three different temperatures of 4℃,8℃and 12℃.The growth and photosynthetic activity were determined every 2 d for a period of 10 *** the end of the experiment,the cultures were harvested and analysed for biochemical *** chlorella strains were able to tolerate higher temperatures than their ambient *** final pigments content showed an increasing trend with increased temperatures for both *** photosynthetic activities were measured using pulse-amplitude modulation(PAM)*** photosynthetic parameters including maximum quantum efficiency(Fv/Fm),maximum relative electron transport rate(r ETRmax),light harvesting efficiency(a)and photoadaptive index(Ek)were derived from the rapid light curves(RLcs).Both chlorella strains showed a slight decline in growth and photosynthetic activities at the initial part of the ***,they showed the ability to recuperate with chlorella UMAcc 250 recovers better compared to chlorella UMAcc *** chlorella strains showed similar trend in their carbohydrate content at 12℃,while the protein content of chlorella UMAcc 234 decreased when exposed to increasing *** results indicated that polar chlorella are able to survive at increased temperatures throughout the experiment.
