AIM:To analyze the crosslinking(CXL)effects in pediatric keratoconus,and to identify the patients’corneal characteristics whose pachymetry could not be adequately evaluated by Scheimpflug method after ***:Consecutive pediatric patients with progressive keratoconus underwent CXL were ***-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and spheric equivalent(SE)were measured before and after *** CXL,groups 1 and 2 were divided based on the posterior surface Pentacam quality specifications(QS):"OK"(Group 1)and"not OK"(Group 2).The mean(RmF and RmB)and minimum(RminF and RminB)radius of curvatures of the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces,and the thinnest pachymetry(Pmin)were measured preoperatively at 3,6,12,24,and 36 *** was ***:Twenty-six patients(14 men,mean age 14±1.8 y)and median Kmax of 59.9 D initially and 61.4 D preoperatively were *** was not different before and 24 mo after *** 2 statistically differed to group 1 in that SE was more myopic before and with no difference 24 mo after CXL;RmF and RmB were steeper and Pmin was thinner *** 2,in which pachymetric changes could not be adequately evaluated after surgery,presented with significant RmF flattening,a shift to hyperopia,and more haze after ***:Patients whose pachymetry could not be adequately evaluated after CXL had steeper and thinner corneas before *** predictive factors for impaired QS after CXL are RmF,RmB,and *** advanced keratoconus,alternative methods to analyze pachymetry and the posterior surface should be considered.

Dear Editor,The development of reversible photochromic materials combining efficient writing/erasing properties, low-cost and environmentally friendly compositions is a breakthrough challenge and a subject of many research works in the last decades. In this perspective, transparent oxide glasses are promising since their production is ensured by a simple melt-quenching technique and a proper laser writing setup is able to give rise to a localized photochromic effect, opening opportunities for 3D optical data storage.

Disc degeneration primarily contributes to chronic low back and neck ***,there is an urgent need to understand the spectrum of disc degeneration phenotypes such as fibrosis,ectopic calcification,herniation,or mixed *** these phenotypes,disc calcification is the least *** calcification,by definition,is the pathological mineralization of soft tissues,widely studied in the context of conditions that afflict vasculature,skin,and ***,disc calcification is associated with poor surgical outcomes and back pain refractory to conservative *** is frequently seen as a consequence of disc aging and progressive degeneration but exhibits unique molecular and morphological characteristics:hypertrophic chondrocyte-like cell differentiation;TNAP,ENPP1,and ANK upregulation;cell death;altered Pi and PPi homeostasis;and local *** studies in mouse models have provided a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying this *** is essential to recognize that the presentation and nature of mineralization differ between AF,NP,and EP ***,the combination of anatomic location,genetics,and environmental stressors,such as aging or trauma,govern the predisposition to ***,the systemic regulation of calcium and Pi metabolism is less important than the local activity of PPi modulated by the ANK-ENPP1 axis,along with disc cell death and differentiation *** there is limited understanding of this phenotype,understanding the molecular pathways governing local intervertebral disc calcification may lead to developing disease-modifying drugs and better clinical management of degeneration-related pathologies.

Factors Associated with Women＇s Attitude towards Spousal Abuse： The Case of Zambia

Gender based violence （GBV） is a worldwide scourge and spousal battering has been found to be a common form of GBV. The objective of this paper was to examine the attitudes of women towards spousal battering and to assess the association between women＇s attitudes and the likelihood of being abused. The paper utilizes secondary data from the 2007 Zambia Demographic Health Survey （ZDHS）. Results show that the younger women were more likely to justify wife beating when compared to older women （P 〈 0.05）. Women from urban areas （68%） with middle income background （71%） were more likely to agree that wife beating is justified compared to rural women （56%） and women with a higher income background （51%）. Women who had attained secondary level of education were 1.3 times more likely to report that wife beating was justified compared to those from higher levels of education. Women whose husbands drunk alcohol were 1.2 times more likely to report that wife beating was justified compared to those women whose husbands never drunk alcohol. The results from the analysis suggests that age, marital duration, place of residence, wealth index, partner＇s wife and husband＇s educational level, number of children and husband＇s alcohol consumption contributed to justification of spousal battering.

A method based on regression modeling was developed to discern the contribution of component chemicals to the toxicity of highly complex, environmentally realistic mixtures of disinfection byproducts（DBPs）. Chemical disinfection of drinking water forms DBP *** of concerns about possible reproductive and developmental toxicity, a whole mixture（WM） of DBPs produced by chlorination of a water concentrate was administered as drinking water to Sprague–Dawley（S–D） rats in a multigenerational study. Age of puberty acquisition,i.e., preputial separation（PPS） and vaginal opening（VO）, was examined in male and female offspring, respectively. When compared to controls, a slight, but statistically significant delay in puberty acquisition was observed in females but not in males. WM-induced differences in the age at puberty acquisition were compared to those reported in S–D rats administered either a defined mixture（DM） of nine regulated DBPs or individual DBPs. Regression models were developed using individual animal data on age at PPS or VO from the DM study. Puberty acquisition data reported in the WM and individual DBP studies were then compared with the DM models. The delay in puberty acquisition observed in the WM-treated female rats could not be distinguished from delays predicted by the DM regression model, suggesting that the nine regulated DBPs in the DM might account for much of the delay observed in the WM. This method is applicable to mixtures of other types of chemicals and other endpoints.

Context Hemoglobin-based blood substitutes(HBBSs)are infusible oxygen- carrying liquids that have long shelf lives,have no need for refrigeration or cross- matching,and are ideal for treating hemorrhagic shock in remote *** trials of HBBSs during the last decade have reported increased risks without clinical benefit. Objective To assess the safety of HBBSs in surgical,stroke,and trauma patients. Data Sources PubMed,EMBASE,and Cochrane Library searches for articles using hemoglobin and blood substitutes from 1980 through March 25,2008;reviews of Food and Drug Administration(FDA)advisory committee meeting materials;and In- ternet searches for company press releases. Study Selection Randomized controlled trials including patients aged 19 years and older receiving HBBSs *** database searches yielded 70 trials of which 13 met these criteria;in addition,data from 2 other trials were reported in 2 press releases,and additional data were included in 1 relevant FDA review. Data Extraction Data on death and myocardial infarction(MI)as outcome variables. Results Sixteen trials involving 5 different products and 3711 patients in varied pa- tient populations were identified.A test for heterogeneity of the results of these trials was not significant for either mortality or MI(for both,I=0%,P(?)60),and data were combined using a fixed-effects ***,there was a statistically significant in- crease in the risk of death(164 deaths in the HBBS-treated groups and 123 deaths in the control groups;relative risk [RR],1.30;95% confidence interval [CI],1.05-1.61) and risk of MI(59 MIs in the HBBS-treated groups and 16 MIs in the control groups;RR,2.71;95% CI,1.67-4.40)with these *** analysis of these trials in- dicated the increased risk was not restricted to a particular HBBS or clinical indication. Conclusion Based on the available data,use of HBBSs is associated with a signifi- cantly increased risk of death and MI.

Introduction: Uterine inversion is a reversal of the uterus into a glove. It is an obstetric complication of deliverance. Uterine inversion out from pregnancy is rare. The Müller duct is an embryonic tubular formation which will transform into the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes. The mixed Müllerian malignant tumor is a rare tumor to girl and woman in genital activity, which develops in the uterus at the expense of vestige of the Müller channels. The association of these two pathologies is rare. We report an observation of complicated uterine inversion mulloblastoma to a teenager. Observation: A teenager of 15 years old, admitted for a vulvar tumor, which has occurred about two months. Student in the first class of senior high school, she has no medical history, and no particular surgery. She had her threat at the age of 13, and has a regular menstrual cycle of 30 days, with 05 days of period. Two months before her admission, the patient noticed during her menstruation, the perception of soft intravaginal tissue but which disappeared when her period stopped. A week before her admission, she felt pelvic pain with expulsive colic, radiating to the external genitals, 3 days later, a protusion from the vaginal vestibule of a mass, so the volume gradually increased. It is in front of this situation that the patient consults a health center, which refers her to us for treatment. On admission, the patient was conscious with a good hemodynamic state. Vulva inspection revealed a large, rounded mass with an endovaginal implantation, with necrosis areas. This mass was resistant, bleeding in any manipulation, mobile, perceive neither the cervical relief nor the presence of the uterus. The ultrasound assessment had marked: a large abdomino-pelvic pseudo-mass with urinary repercussions right form of hydronephrosis uretero and associated with gastric distension, and MRI complete inversion of the uterus, with the uterine in the vaginal cavity associated with a large vulvovagina
