Comparison of intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone acetonide theraphies for diffuse diabetic macular edema

AIM: To compare therapeutic effects of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide(IVTA) versus intravitreal bevacizumab(IVB) injections for bilateral diffuse diabetic macular edema(DDME). METHODS: Forty eyes of 20 patients with bilateral DDME participated in this study. For each patient, 4 mg/0.1 m L IVTA was injected to one eye and 2.5 mg/0.1 m L IVB was injected to the other eye. The effects of injection for diabetic macular edema(DME) were evaluated using best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central macular thickness(CMT) by optical coherence tomography(OCT)and intraocular pressure(IOP) by applanation *** underwent eye examinations, including BCVA,CMT, and IOP at pre-injection, 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection. During the follow-up, second injections were performed to eyes which have CMT greater than 400 μm at 12 wk for salvage ***: BCVA(logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) at pre-injection, 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection was 0.71 ±0.19, 0.62 ±0.23, 0.63 ±0.12, 0.63 ±0.13,0.63±0.14 and 0.61±0.24 in the IVTA group and 0.68±0.25,0.61 ±0.22, 0.60 ±0.24, 0.62 ±0.25, 0.65 ±0.26 and 0.59 ±0.25 in the IVB group, respectively. CMT(μm) at pre-injection,1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection was 544 ±125, 383±96,335 ±87, 323 ±87, 333 ±92, 335 ±61 in the IVTA group and514 ±100, 431 ±86, 428 ±107, 442 ±106, 478 ±112, 430 ±88 in the IVB group respectively. Reduction ratios of mean CMT were 29% at 1wk, 38% at 4wk, 40% at 8wk, 38% at12 wk, and 38% at 24 wk in the IVTA group. Second IVTA injections were performed to the 6 eyes(30%) at 12 *** ratios of mean CMT were 16% at 1wk, 17% at4wk, 14% at 8wk, 7% at 12 wk, and 16% at 24 wk in the IVB group. In this study, we proposed a rapid and sensitive method for quantification and spatial distribution of salicylic acid in film tablets using FT-Raman spectroscopy with multivariate curve resolution(MCR). For this purpose, the constituents of film tablets were identified by using FT-Raman spectroscopy, and then eight different concentrations of salicylic acid tablets were visualized by Raman mapping. MCR was applied to mapping data to expose the active pharmaceutical ingredients in the presence of other excipients by monitoring distribution maps and combination of FT-Raman mapping with MCR enabled the determination of lower salicylic acid concentrations. In addition, the distribution of major excipient, lactose, was examined in the tablet form. A calibration curve was obtained by plotting the intensity of the Raman signal at 1635 cm^(-1) versus the concentration of salicylic acid and the correlation was found to be linear within the range of 0.5%–3.9% with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The limit of detection for the technique was determined 0.35%. The ability of the technique to quantify salicylic acid in tablet test samples was also investigated.

A cellular automata model is proposed to simulate bi-directional pedestrian flow. Pedestrian movement is investigated by using ant algorithms. Ants communicate with each other by dropping a chemical, called a pheromone, on the substrate while crawling forward. Similarly, it is considered that oppositely moving pedestrians drop ＇visual pheromones＇ on their way and the visual pheromones might cause attractive or repulsive interactions. This pheromenon is introduced into mod- elling the pedestrians＇ walking preference. In this way, the decision-making process of pedestrians will be based on ＇the instinct of following＇. At some densities, the relationships of velocity-density and flux-density are analyzed for different evaporation rates of visual pheromones. Lane formation and phase transition are observed for certain evaporation rates of visual pheromones.

Shalgam,a naturally fermented beverage,is a prebiotic supplement and has high antioxidant *** study aimed to encapsulate shalgam to develop a functional probiotic beverage by freeze *** size measurement and surface morphology,wettability,solubility,bulk density,tapped bulk density,moisture,water activity,total polyphenol,total monomeric anthocyanin,antioxidant activity and encapsulation efficiency analyzes were performed for characterization of shalgam *** obtained shalgam capsules were used in kefir production at the rate of 0%,5%,10%,15%(w/v).Color,viscosity,water soluble dry matter determination,total protein,total fat,titration acidity,pH,microbiological and sensory analysis of kefir samples were *** microcapsules increased total phenolic,anthocyanin and antioxidant activity of kefir significantly(p<0.05).Kefir samples containing 5%shalgam microcapsules had the highest microbiological viability and sensory score.

Background:Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy(ICP)increases the risk of adverse pregnancy *** study aimed to explore the association between serum syndecan-1 and glypican-3 levels and the adverse perinatal outcome as well as the responses to the treatment of ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA).Methods:This prospective,case control study included 88 pregnant women(44 women with ICP and 44 healthy controls).The primary end points were the perinatal outcome and the response to UDCA therapy.A logistic regression model was used to identify the independent risk factors of adverse pregnancy outcomes and reduced response to UDCA ***:Women with ICP had significantly higher serum syndecan-1(1.27±0.36 ng/m L vs.0.98±0.50 ng/m L;P=0.003),glypican-3(1.78±0.13 ng/m L vs.1.69±0.16 ng/m L;P=0.004),AST(128.59±1.44 vs.13.29±1.32 U/L;P<0.001),and ALT(129.84±1.53 vs.8.00±3.67 U/L;P<0.001)levels compared with the *** increased levels of syndecan-1(OR=4.715,95%CI:1.554–14.310;P=0.006),glypican-3(OR=8.465,95%CI:3.372–21.248;P=0.007),ALT(OR=1.382,95%CI:1.131–1.690;P=0.002),and postprandial bile acid(PBA)(OR=3.392,95%CI:1.003–12.869;P=0.026)were correlated to *** adverse neonatal outcome was related to increased glypican-3(OR=4.275,95%CI:2.726–5.635;P=0.039),and PBA(OR=3.026,95%CI:1.069–13.569;P=0.037).Increases of syndecan-1(OR=7.464,95%CI:2.130–26.153,P=0.017)and glypican-3(OR=6.194,95%CI:2.951–13.002;P=0.025)were the risk factors of decreased response to UDCA ***:Syndecan-1 and glypican-3 might be powerful determinants in predicting adverse perinatal outcome in patients with ICP,and they can be used to predict the response to the UDCA treatment.

Association of complementary and integrative therapy use and symptoms among Turkish patients with familial Mediterranean fever

Objective: This study explored the correlations between the use of complementary and integrative therapies(CITs) and symptoms among Turkish patients with familial Mediterranean fever(FMF).Methods: This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. The study was conducted with 1119 FMF patients who were registered to the social networking site for Behcet’s and the FMF Patients Association(Befemder) in Turkey, between January 2018 and February 2019. Data were collected using an online survey, for which a three-part questionnaire was created using a Google form. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the ***: It was determined that 53.2% of the individuals who participated in the research used various forms of CITs and that 32.8% used vitamin and mineral supplements(calcium, iron, and vitamin B12, C and D), 25.0% used nutritional supplements(fish oil and honey), and 24.6% used oral herbs(ginger, turmeric, green tea and rosemary) and mind–body methods(relaxation, respiration exercise and meditation). It was determined that the percentage of participants that used CITs was higher among women(odds ratio [OR] = 1.825;95% confidence interval [CI] 1.421–2.344), those with joint pain(OR = 1.385;95% CI 1.047–1.832), those with difficulty breathing(OR = 1.323;95% CI 1.031–1.697), those with gastrointestinal symptoms(OR = 1.405;95% CI 1.089–1.814) and those who had a family member with FMF(OR = 1.437;95% CI 1.115–1.851).Conclusion: More than half of the individuals used at least one type of CIT for symptom control.

Exercise and rehabilitation approaches in palliative care programs for cancer patients affect patients' symptoms, physical functioning, muscle strength, emotional wellbeing, psychological symptoms, functional capacities, quality of life, mortality and morbidity positively. Based on scientific data, palliative cancer patients should be recommended to participate in exercise programs. There is no standard approach to recipe an exercise regimen for a palliative cancer survivor. Studies for demonstrating the positive effects of exercising in palliative care patients are increasing in number day by day. At this point, increasing awareness about exercising in the entire team monitoring the patient and our efforts in this matter seems to be very important.
