Bench-top aqueous two-phase extraction of isolated individual single-walled carbon nanotubes

Isolation and purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs） are prerequisites for their implementation in various applications. In this work, we present a fast （-5 min）, low-cost, and easily scalable bench-top approach to the extraction of high-quality isolated SWCNTs from bundles and impurities in an aqueous dispersion. The extraction procedure, based on aqueous two-phase （ATP） separation, is widely applicable to any SWCNT source （tested on samples up to 1.7 nm in diameter） and independent of defect density, purity, diameter, and length. The extracted dispersions demonstrate that the removal of large aggregates, small bundles, and impurities is comparable to that by density gradient ultracentrifugation, but without the need for high-end instrumentation. Raman and fluorescence-excitation spectroscopy, single-nanotube fluorescence imaging, atomic force and transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis all confirm the high purity of the isolated SWCNTs. By predispersing the SWCNTs without sonication （only gentle stirring）, full-length, pristine SWCNTs can be isolated （tested up to 20 μm）. Hence, this simple ATP method will find immediate application in the generation of SWCNT materials for all levels of nanotube research and applications, from fundamental studies to high-performance devices.

Electrokinetics Technology to Improve Acidizing of Carbonate Reservoir Rocks

A novel technology (electrokinetics) is proposed to improve acidizing operations, i.e., increase the penetration distance. The acid dissolves the carbonates (limestones/dolomites), enlarging the pores and increasing the width of pre-existing fractures. This gives rise to an increase in permeability. The principal acid commonly used is hydrochloric (HCl), which is pumped through tubing. Aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid (usually 15%) are pumped into the carbonate formations to enlarge the pores and pre-existing fractures. Without application of D.C. current, the penetration distance is usually very short, especially in tight rocks. However, the penetration distance of acid is very short. By applying D.C. current, one can drive the acid for long distances into the formation being acidized.

Treatment of Massive Low-Grade Chondrosarcoma of Nasal Septum with Helical Tomotherapy: A Case Report

Chondrosarcomas are malignant bone tumors which develop as a cartilaginous differentiation of primary mesenchymal cells and the second most frequently seen malignant tumor of the bone after osteosarcoma. These malignancies are slowly growing non-epithelial tumors with unknown etiology and most frequently seen during the 4 decades of life. They are frequently localized on pelvis, ribs and long bones. Nasal septum CSs are very rarely seen malignancies. They originate from septal mucosa or cartilage and it is difficult to make a diagnosis unless they reach a certain size. A few cases of CSs with nasal septum have been reported in the literature. In cases of CSs, surgery is the gold standard treatment modality;however in surgically unresectable cases or close to margins, radiotherapy plays a significant role in primary and adjuvant treatment. Based on the position of the tumor in head and neck and extremely closeness of the tumor to vital organs as optic nerve, chiasm and brain, image guided-intensity modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) becomes very effective and reliable modalities and may be a favorable treatment alternative.

The Effect of Generated Chlorine Gas on Electroremediation of Heavy Metals from Offshore Muds

The removal efficiency of heavy metals from offshore muds is enhanced in the presence of generated chlorine gas (Cl2). The tests showed a high removal efficiency of heavy metals at the anode end of cores after 24 hours of EK application. In the initial tests, high electrokinetic flow potential was achieved;however, high levels of chlorine gas were produced in the high-salinity environments. The process was improved by controlling and maintaining a certain fraction of the chlorine gas (Cl2) in place. The pH was controlled by the chlorine gas maintained in-situ and transported from the anode to cathode. The transports of four heavy metals were evaluated in this study. The chlorine gas can have two impacts on the transport of metals in the system. One is to oxidize the metal ions to a higher oxidation state and the second is to form chloride complexes, which have higher mobility in the system. Determination of oxidation state and the subsequent metal chloride complex are left for future research.

Dysphagia in rheumatological disorders

The Usefulness of Renal Doppler Parameters in Chronic Kidney Disease: Is There a Cut-Off Value to Estimate End Stage Kidney Disease?

Aims: In this study, Doppler parameters were studied in patients with advanced stage renal disease, and the relationship between Doppler parameters and renal disease stage was investigated. Doppler values were evaluated for a cut-off value between normal and end-stage kidney disease group. Materials and methods: 50 patients with chronic kidney disease and 15 patients belonging to the same age group and with normal serum creatinine levels were comprised of the study and control groups. Resistivity and pulsatality indices were measured at the main renal arteries and interlobular arteries at both sides. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the PI and RI values obtained from the main renal and interlobular arteries. PI sums were compared with those from the control group, and a cut-off value of 2.15 was found, with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 86.7%. Conclusion: Any increase in the RI and PI values obtained from the main renal and interlobular arteries must bring to mind the possibility of advancing renal damage and interstitial fibrosis. Patients with and without renal parenchymal damage can be differentiated by means of comparing the total PI values obtained from the right and left main renal and interlobular arteries.

Lymphedema and rheumatological disorders

In the literature, although the prevalence of lymphedema is low in inflammatory rheumatological diseases, rigorous approaches to diagnosis and treatment have led to significant improvement in patients' quality of life. Lymphedema is observed more frequently in patients with rheumatoid arthritis with respect to case presentations, but it is also observed in psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic sclerosis, and childhood inflammatory rheumatological diseases. Other rheumatological diseases and tumor-related secondary causes should also be kept in mind in the diagnosis of lymphedema. Complex decongestive therapy-skin care, manual lymph drainage, compression and exercise are the primary treatment approaches. Both basic drugs and tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors have been tried in addition to complex decongestive physiotherapy programs. However, the success of alternative medical treatments is controversial in the literature. It may be useful to include the disease in post-diagnosis complex decongestive physiotherapy program and to use the drugs mentioned in the literature. However, more data are needed to reach conclusive results.

Sarcopenia("sarx" for muscle,"penia" for loss) is an important problem in the *** muscle loss is a part of natural aging,excessive loss that limits physical activity is considered *** is associated with age,malnutrition,physical inactivity,inflammatory stress and hormonal *** relationships between sarcopenia and various chronic inflammatory diseases have been shown,the role of rheumatologic disease in sarcopenia development is currently *** aim in this mini-review was to increase the awareness of clinicians to sarcopenia,and to evaluate studies in which the relationship between sarcopenia and rheumatologic diseases was *** also aimed to determine whether the available literature was sufficient to confirm a strong relationship between these *** our findings showed that diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis,osteoarthritis and systemic sclerosis may have a role in sarcopenia development and progress,the methodologies and results of the majority of studies were insufficient in determining direct causal *** believe future studies would benefit from focusing on the factors and causes of sarcopenia,with a goal of determining the factors associated with rheumatologic disease that are most effective in sarcopenia development.
