Spatiotemporal dynamics of land use/land cover(LULC)changes and its impact on land surface temperature:A case study in New Town Kolkata,eastern India

Rapid urbanization creates complexity,results in dynamic changes in land and environment,and influences the land surface temperature(LST)in fast-developing *** this study,we examined the impact of land use/land cover(LULC)changes on LST and determined the intensity of urban heat island(UHI)in New Town Kolkata(a smart city),eastern India,from 1991 to 2021 at 10-a intervals using various series of Landsat multi-spectral and thermal *** study used the maximum likelihood algorithm for image classification and other methods like the correlation analysis and hotspot analysis(Getis–Ord Gi^(*) method)to examine the impact of LULC changes on urban thermal *** study noticed that the area percentage of built-up land increased rapidly from 21.91%to 45.63%during 1991–2021,with a maximum positive change in built-up land and a maximum negative change in sparse *** mean temperature significantly increased during the study period(1991–2021),from 16.31℃to 22.48℃in winter,29.18℃to 34.61℃in summer,and 19.18℃to 27.11℃in *** result showed that impervious surfaces contribute to higher LST,whereas vegetation helps decrease *** ecological status has been found in built-up land,and excellent ecological status has been found in vegetation and water *** hot spot and cold spot areas shifted their locations every decade due to random LULC *** after New Town Kolkata became a smart city,high LST has been ***,this study indicated that urbanization and changes in LULC patterns can influence the urban thermal environment,and appropriate planning is needed to reduce *** study can help policy-makers create sustainable smart cities.

Coal-fired power plants are one of the most important targets with respect to reduction of CO2 *** reasons for this are that coal-fired power plants offer localized large point sources(LPS)of CO2 and that the Indian power sector con tributes to roughly half of all-India ***2capture and storage(CCS)can be implemented in these power plants for long-temi decarbonisation of the Indian *** this paper,two artificial intelligence(Al)techniques—adaptive network based fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)and multi gene genetic programming(MGGP)are used to model Indian coal-fired power plants with CO2 *** data set of 75 power plants take the plant size,the capture type,the load and the CO2 emission as the input and the COE and annual CO2 emissions as the *** is found that MGGP is more suited to these applications with an R2 value of more than 99%between the predicted and actual values,as against the^96%correlation for the ANFIS *** also gives the traditionally expected results in sensitivity analysis,which ANFIS fails to *** other parameters in the base plant and CO2 capture unit may be included in similar studies to give a more accurate *** is because MGGP gives a better perspective toward qualitative data,such as capture type,as compared to ANFIS.

Coal is the backbone of the Indian power sector. The coal-fired power plants remain the largest emitters of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and substantial amounts of nitrogen oxides, which are associated with climate and health impacts. Various CO2 mitigation technologies （carbon capture and storage--CCS） and SO2/NOx mitigation technologies （flue gas desulfurization and selective catalytic reduction） have been employed to reduce the environmental impacts of the coal-fired power plants. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the feasibility of various mitigation technologies employed. This paper attempts to perform environmental life cycle assessment （LCA） of Indian coal-fired power plant with and without CO2, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls. The study develops new normalization factors for India in various damage categories, using the Indian emissions and energy consumption data, coupled with the emissions and particulate emission to come up with a final environmental impact of coal-fired electricity. The results show a large degree of dependence on the perspective of assessment used. The impact of sensitivities of individual substances and the effect of plant efficiency on the final LCA results is also studied.

Present work highlights application of utility theory combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Taguchi’s robust design for simultaneous optimization of correlated multiple surface quality characteristics of mild steel machined product prepared by straight turning operation. The study aims at evaluating the most favorable process environment followed by an optimal parametric combination for achieving high surface quality. Traditional Taguchi based hybrid optimization approaches rely on the assumption that quality indices are uncorrelated or independent. But it is felt that, in practice, there may be some correlation among various quality indices (responses) under consideration. To overcome this limitation of Taguchi approach, the present study proposes application of PCA to convert correlated responses into uncorrelated quality indices called principal components. Finally based on utility theory, Taguchi method has been applied to solve this optimization problem. The study demonstrates detailed methodology and concludes robustness and flexibility of the proposed optimization technique and validates its effectiveness through a case study in which correlated multiple response characteristics of turning operation have been optimized.
