Effects of reductive inorganics and NOM on the formation of chlorite in the chlorine dioxide disinfection of drinking water

Chlorine dioxide(ClO_(2))disinfection usually does not produce halogenated disinfection byproducts,but the formation of the inorganic by-product chlorite(ClO^(–)_(2))is a serious consideration.In this study,the ClO^(–)_(2)formation rule in the ClO_(2)disinfection of drinking water was investigated in the presence of three representative reductive inorganics and four natural organic matters(NOMs),respectively.Fe^(2+)and S^(2–)mainly reduced ClO_(2)to ClO^(–)_(2)at low concentrations.When ClO_(2)was consumed,the ClO^(–)_(2)would be further reduced by Fe^(2+)and S^(2–),leading to the decrease of ClO^(–)_(2).The reaction efficiency of Mn^(2+)with ClO_(2)was lower than that of Fe^(2+)and S^(2–).It might be the case that Mn O 2 generated by the reaction between Mn^(2+)and ClO_(2)had adsorption and catalytic oxidation on Mn^(2+).However,Mn^(2+)would not reduce ClO^(–)_(2).Among the four NOMs,humic acid and fulvic acid reacted with ClO_(2)actively,followed by bovine serum albumin,while sodium alginate had almost no reaction with ClO_(2).The maximum ClO^(–)_(2)yields of reductive inorganics(70%)was higher than that of NOM(around 60%).The lower the concentration of reductive substances,the more ClO^(–)_(2)could be produced by per unit concentration of reductive substances.The results of the actual water samples showed that both reductive inorganics and NOM played an important role in the formation of ClO^(–)_(2)in disinfection.

Multifunctional role of oral bacteria in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a spectrum of liver disorders of varying severity, ultimately leading to fibrosis. This spectrum primarily consists of NAFL and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. The pathogenesis of NAFLD is closely associated with disturbances in the gut microbiota and impairment of the intestinal barrier. Non-gut commensal flora, particularly bacteria, play a pivotal role in the progression of NAFLD. Notably, Porphyromonas gingivalis, a principal bacterium involved in periodontitis, is known to facilitate lipid accumulation, augment immune responses, and induce insulin resistance, thereby exacerbating fibrosis in cases of periodontitis-associated NAFLD. The influence of oral microbiota on NAFLD via the "oral-gut-liver" axis is gaining recognition, offering a novel perspective for NAFLD management through microbial imbalance correction. This review endeavors to encapsulate the intricate roles of oral bacteria in NAFLD and explore underlying mechanisms, emphasizing microbial control strategies as a viable therapeutic avenue for NAFLD.

Real-time K-TIG welding penetration prediction on embedded system using a segmentation-LSTM model

Keyhole tungsten inert gas(K-TIG)welding is capable of realizing single-sided welding and double-sided forming and has been widely used in medium and thick plate welding.In order to improve the accuracy of automatic weld identification and weld penetration prediction of robot in the process of large workpiece welding,a two-stage model is proposed in this paper,which can monitor the K-TIG welding penetration state in real time on the embedded system,called segmentation-LSTM model.The proposed system extracts 9 weld pool geometric features with segmentation network,and then extracts the weld gap using a traditional algorithm.Then these 10-dimensional features are input into the LSTM model to predict the penetration state,including under penetration,partial penetration,good penetration and over penetration.The recognition accuracy of the proposed system can reach 95.2%.In this system,to solve the difficulty of labeling data and lack of segmentation accuracy,an improved LabelMe capable of live-wire annotation tool and a novel loss function were proposed,respectively.The latter was also called focal dice loss,which enabled the network to achieve a performance of 0.933 mloU on the testing set.Finally,an improved slimming strategy compresses the network,making the segmentation network achieve real-time on the embedded system(RK3399pro).

Two case reports of gastroendoscopy-associated Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia

Two cases of gastroendoscopy-associated Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii ) bacteremia were discovered at the study hospital. The first case was a 66-year-old woman who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and endoscopic retrograde papillotomy, and then A. baumannii bacteremia occurred. The second case was a 70-year-old female who underwent endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage due to obstruction of intra-hepatic ducts, and bacteremia occurred due to polymicrobes (Escherichia coli , viridans streptococcus , and A. baumannii ). After a literature review, we suggest that correct gastroendoscopy technique and skill in drainage procedures, as well as antibiotic prophylaxis, are of paramount importance in minimizing the risk of gastroendoscopy-associated bacteremia.

Objective:Omicron,a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)variant,is responsible for numerous infections in China.This study investigates the association between the use of Seven-Flavor Herb Tea(SFHT)and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection to develop precise and differentiated strategies for control of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Methods:This case-control study was conducted at shelter hospitals and quarantine hotels in China.A total of 5348 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were enrolled between April 1 and May 31,2022,while 2190 uninfected individuals served as healthy controls.Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on demographics,underlying diseases,vaccination status,and use of SFHT.Patients were propensity-score-matched using 1:1 nearest-neighbor matching of the logit of the propensity score.Subsequently,a conditional logistic regression model was used for data analysis.Results:Overall,7538 eligible subjects were recruited,with an average age of[45.54±16.94]years.The age of COVID-19 patients was significantly higher than that of uninfected individuals([48.25±17.48]years vs[38.92±13.41]years;t=22.437,P<0.001).A total of 2190 COVID-19 cases were matched with uninfected individuals at a 1:1 ratio.The use of SFHT(odds ratio=0.753,95%confidence interval:0.692,0.820)was associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to untreated individuals.Conclusion:Our findings suggest that taking SFHT reduces the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.This is a useful study in the larger picture of COVID-19 management,but data from large-sample multi-center,randomized clinical trial are warranted to confirm the finding.

Virus-induced asthma is prevalent among children,but its underlying mechanisms are unclear.Accumulated evidence indicates that early-life respiratory virus infection increases susceptibility to allergic asthma.Nonetheless,the relationship between systemic virus infections,such as enterovirus infection,and the ensuing effects on allergic asthma development is unknown.Early-life enterovirus infection was correlated with higher risks of allergic diseases in children.Adult mice exhibited exacerbated mite allergen-induced airway inflammation following recovery from EV-A71 infection in the neonatal period.Bone marrow-derived macrophages(BMDMs)from recovered EV-A71-infected mice showed sustained innate immune memory(trained immunity)that could drive naïve T helper cells toward Th2 and Th17 cell differentiation when in contact with mites.Adoptive transfer of EV-A71-trained BMDMs induced augmented allergic inflammation in naïve recipient mice,which was inhibited by 2-deoxy-D-glucose(2-DG)pretreatment,suggesting that trained macrophages following enterovirus infection are crucial in the progression of allergic asthma later in life.

Infection-responsive long-term antibacterial bone plates for open fracture therapy

The infections in open fracture induce high morbidity worldwide.Thus,developing efficient anti-infective orthopedic devices is of great significance.In this work,we designed a kind of infection-responsive long-term antibacterial bone plates.Through a facile and flexible volatilization method,a multi-aldehyde polysaccharide derivative,oxidized sodium alginate,was crosslinked with multi-amino compounds,gentamycin and gelatin,to fabricate a uniform coating on Ti bone plates via Schiff base reaction,which was followed by a secondary crosslinking process by glutaraldehyde.The double-crosslinked coating was stable under normal condition,and could responsively release gentamycin by the triggering of the acidic microenvironment caused by bacterial metabolism,owning to the pH-responsiveness of imine structure.The thickness of the coating was ranging from 22.0μm to 63.6μm.The coated bone plates(Ti-GOGs)showed infection-triggered antibacterial properties(>99%)and high biocompatibility.After being soaked for five months,it still possessed efficient antibacterial ability,showing its sustainable antibacterial performance.The in vivo anti-infection ability was demonstrated by an animal model of infection after fracture fixation(IAFF).At the early stage of IAFF,Ti-GOGs could inhibit the bacterial infection(>99%).Subsequently,Ti-GOGs could promote recovery of fracture of IAFF.This work provides a convenient and universal strategy for fabrication of various antibacterial orthopedic devices,which is promising to prevent and treat IAFF.

Polyurea coating for foamed concrete panel:An efficient way to resist explosion

Autoclaved aerated concrete(AAC) panels have ultra-light weight,excellent thermal insulation and energy absorption,so it is an ideal building material for protective structures.To improve the blast resistance of the AAC panels,three schemes are applied to strengthen the AAC panels through spraying 4 mm thick polyurea coating from top,bottom and double-sides.In three-point bending tests,the polyurea-coated AAC panels have much higher ultimate loads than the un-coated panels,but slightly lower than those strengthened by the carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CEFRPs).Close-in explosion experiments reveal the dynamic strengthening effect of the polyurea coating.Critical scaled distances of the strengthened AAC panels are acquired,which are valuable for the engineering application of the AAC panels in the extreme loading conditions.Polyurea coatings efficiently enhance the blast resistance of the bottom and double-sided polyurea-coated AAC panels.It is interesting that the polyurea-coated AAC panels have much more excellent blast resistance than the CFRP reinforced AAC panels,although the latter have better static mechanical properties.

Tribological properties of Cu-based composites with S-doped NbSe_2

In this study, S-doped NbSea （NbSo.aSel.8） powders were fabricated, and the corresponding Cu-based composites （Cu/NbSo.eSe1.8） were obtained by powder metallurgy technique. The phase compositions, physical, and tribological properties of Cu-based composites were investigated systematically. The results show that Cu matrix reacts with NbSo.2Sel.8 to produce Cu2Se and Cu0.38NbSo.2Se1.8 during sintering process, which influences the physical and tribological properties of Cu-based composites significantly. Specially, with NbS0.2Se1.8 content increasing, the density of Cu/ NbSo.2Se1.8 composites decreases, and the hardness increases firstly and then decreases, while the electric resistivity in- creases slightly. In addition, the incorporation of NbSo.2Se1.8 enhances the tribological properties of Cu greatly, which is attributed to the lubricating effect of Cuo,38NbSo.2Se1.8 and the reinforcement effect of Cu2Se. In particular, when the content of NbSo.2Sel.8 is 6 wt%, the Cu-based composite has the best tribological properties.
