Structure and species composition of tree stands on verges and slopes along a major highway in Hong Kong

Arboricultural research focusing on transport land use was lacking in Hong *** highway slopes were registered in the Systematic Identification of Maintenance Responsibility of Slopes in the Territory(SIMAR),abbreviated as SIMAR *** aimed to analyze patterns in the structure and species composition of the tree stock along a highway in Hong Kong and examined how a slope registration system could help explain the characteristics of urban *** 53 slopes and 52 verges along San Tin Highway,Hong Kong were randomly *** trees on each slope and verge were collectively sampled as a tree *** variables,namely tree abundance,species richness,maximum tree height,Shannon-Wiener diversity,Simpson's dominance,and Pielou's evenness were measured for each *** addition,a limited visual tree risk assessment was *** 7,209 trees in 23 species were *** richness was low,ranging from one to eight species per *** and non-SIMAR slopes were *** slopes had significantly higher species richness,diversity,evenness but lower dominance,with mean difference of 1.41 species,0.17,0.17 *** slopes were associated with lower tree risk *** training regression models,boosting as an ensemble method arbitrarily raised the explanatory power and the predictive accuracy of some *** height,length,angle and area could be significant predictors of the biodiversity-related *** research can sample more habitat characteristics related to the structure and species composition of slopes and verges which were important components of urban forestry.

Objective:To report the clinical maternal and fetal outcomes of pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),along with any associated pregnancy complications,in Hong Kong,China,and to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on these ***:This prospective registry-based observational study included pregnant women who were recruited through convenient sampling and had a laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection with a cycle threshold(Ct)value result available on admission to eight local hospitals in Hong Kong,*** on clinical symptoms,laboratory results,medical treatments,delivery timing and mode,and pregnancy complications were extracted from the Hospital Authority’s electronic medical record ***,fetal,and pregnancy outcomes were compared between unvaccinated pregnant women with COVID-19 and those who had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine before *** continuous variables and categorical variables were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Pearson’s chi-squared test respectively.A P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically ***:A total of 164 pregnant women were included,of whom 78(47.56%)were ***-19 was diagnosed before 28 weeks’gestation in 30(18.29%),while 134(81.71%)were diagnosed at or after 28 weeks’***-two(37.80%)women received at least one dose of COVID-19 *** were no significant differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups in the time interval between COVID-19 diagnosis and delivery,the Ct value,and the gestational age at infection onset or delivery(P>0.05).The majority of women were symptomatic at diagnosis regardless of vaccination status 55(88.71%)in vaccinated group vs.78(76.47%)in unvaccinated group(P=0.052).Symptoms did not significantly differ between groups except for cough(62.90%vs.47.06%,P=0.049).The overall rate of severe COVID-19 in pregnant women was *** t

Using recombinant adhesive proteins as durable and green flame-retardant coatings

Current fire retardants are known to be toxic to humans and our *** environmental-friendly flame retardants(FRs),protein-based flame retardants have been studied extensively recently,even though they are not *** this study,we designed,synthesized and tested a durable protein-based FR through the fusion of the adhesion domain from either mussel foot protein-5(mfp-5)or cellulose-binding domain(CBD)with flame retardant protein(SR protein and alpha casein).We first verified the expression of the recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli using Western ***,we coated the fusion protein(carrying cell lysates)to cotton fabrics and wood and verified with Infrared(IR)*** a vertical burning test and wood flammability test,we confirmed the flame retardancy of the materials after the protein *** the vertical burning test,the SR protein and alpha casein flame retardant proteins with the CBD adhesion domain showed a 50.0%and 43.3%increase in flame *** data is also consistent in the wood flame retardancy *** imaging experiments also suggested these new fire retardants can be preserved on the materials well even after ***,our results showed that flame-retardant proteins with adhesion domains are high potential candidates of green alternative flame retardants.

Minimizing the risk of community spread of COVID-19 via institutional quarantine of high-risk travelers with serial viral RNA testing: A successful experience from Macao SAR, China

Macao,a special administrative region(SAR)of the People’s Republic of China,is located in southern China and shares the border with China's *** is the most densely populated region in the world,with a population of 667400 and a total land area of 32.9 square kilometers in *** the first case diagnosed on January 22,2020,there was a total of 45 laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases in Macao,of which 43 patients(96%)were imported *** date,all patients had been discharged successfully from Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário,a designated hospital to manage all COVID-19 patients in ***,no patient died,and no local community outbreak was *** opinion review describes the underlying factors that could have contributed to the successful experience in Macao SAR,China,which include the following:(1)Early implementation of containment measures;(2)Large-scale quarantine using hotel rooms to reduce the risk of a local outbreak;and(3)Multidisciplinary co-operation and transparency of information to the *** the successful experience in Macao SAR,China,may not be generalized to other regions,it should not be unreasonable to be well prepared with sufficient logistic support to conduct timely containment and early detection of episodic cases to prevent the backsliding of COVID-19 outbreak.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals(EDCs)are a group of molecules that can influence hormonal balance,causing disturbance of the reproductive system and other health *** the efforts to eliminate EDC in the environment,all current approaches are inefficient and *** previous research,studies revealed that laccase-producing microorganisms may be a potential candidate for EDC degradation,as laccases have been found to be able to degrade many kinds of EDCs effectively and ***,we created two recombinant laccases,each fused with secretion peptide,Novel Signal Peptide 4(NSP4),and expressed them in Escherichia coli(***,BL21),together with one laccase without secretion *** first optimized the culture condition of expressing these ***,we test the activity of the recombinant laccases of decolorizing of a synthetic dye,indigo ***,we confirmed the secreted can degrade one of the EDCs,β-estradiol,showing the potential of using the laccase secretion system to degrade toxic compounds.

BACKGROUND Radiologic adjacent segment degeneration(ASDeg)can occur after spinal *** segment disease(ASDis)is defined as the development of new clinical symptoms corresponding to radiographic changes adjacent to the level of previous spinal *** pre-existing ASDeg is generally considered to result in more severe ASDis;nonetheless,whether the ASDeg status before index surgery influences the postoperative risk of revision surgery due to ASDis warrants *** To identify possible risk factors for ASDis and verify the concept that greater preexisting ASDeg leads to more severe *** Data from 212 patients who underwent posterior decompression with Dynesys stabilization from January 2006 to June 2016 were retrospectively *** who underwent surgery for ASDis were categorized as group A(n=13),whereas those who did not were classified as group B(n=199).Survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the modified Pfirrmann grade,University of California-los Angeles grade,body mass index,number of Dynesys-instrumented levels,and *** The mean time of reoperation was 7.22(1.65–11.84)years in group A,and the mean follow-up period was 6.09(0.10–12.76)years in group *** significant difference in reoperation risk was observed:Modified Pfirrmann grade 3 vs 4(P=0.53)or 4 vs 5(P=0.46)for the upper adjacent disc,University of California-los Angeles grade 2 vs 3 for the upper adjacent segment(P=0.66),age of60 years(P=0.9),body mass index25 kg/m2(P=0.3),and sex(P=0.8).CONCLUSION Greater preexisting upper ASDeg was not associated with a higher rate of reoperation for ASDis after Dynesys *** overweight tended to increase reoperation risk after Dynesys surgery for ASDis.

A novel embedded sensor network records changes in key climatic-environmental variables over a range of altitude in the BaekduDaegan Mountain （BDM） of Gangwon Province in Korea, a protected mountain region with unique biodiversity undergoing climate change research. The investigated area is subdivided into three horizontal north-south study areas. Three variables, temperature （T, °C）, relative humidity （RH, %）, and light intensity （LI, lumens m-2, or lux, lx）, have been continuously measured at hourly intervals from June, 2olo to September, 2011 using HOBO H8 devices at lo fixed study sites. These hourly observations are aggregated to monthly, seasonal and annual mean values, and results are summarized to inaugurate a long-term climate change investigation. A region wide T difference in accordance with altitude, or lapse rate, over the interval is calculated as o.4°C l00 m-1. T lapse rates change seasonally, with winter lapse rates being greater than those of summer. RH is elevated in summer compared to other seasons. LI within forestland is lower during summer and higher during other seasons. The obtained results could closely relate to the vegetation type and structure and the terrain state since data loggers were located in forestland.

目的:研究大蒜(Allium sativum L.)果聚糖水解酶(FEH)的酶学特征。方法:采用硫酸铵分级沉淀确定FEH所在的沉淀组分,采用薄板层析和离子色谱法研究酶解产物,通过3,5-二硝基水杨酸(DNS)法测定还原糖的变化量计算酶活力,进而研究FEH的酶切位点,研究温度、pH值、离子强度、底物质量浓度对FEH活力的影响。结果:大蒜FEH存在于0～20%硫酸铵饱和度组分,根据酶解产物判断该酶属于外切酶,最适反应温度为45℃,最适反应pH值为5.5,最适离子强度为1.5mol/L氯化钠,最适反应质量浓度为4mg/mL。结论:存在于大蒜中的果聚糖外切酶会影响大蒜加工产品的质量和保鲜大蒜贮藏的糖代谢。
