Highly Efficient Na+ Storage in Uniform Thorn Ball-Like α-MnSe/C Nanospheres

Because of its high theoretical capacity,MnSe has been identified as a promising candidate as the anode material for sodiumion ***,its fast capacity deterioration due to the huge volume change during the intercalation/deintercalation of sodium ions severely hinders its practical ***,the sodium storage mechanism of MnSe is still under discussion and requires in-depth ***,the unique thorn ball-likeα-MnSe/C nanospheres have been prepared using manganese-containing metal organic framework(Mn-MOF)as a precursor followed by in situ gas-phase selenization at an elevated *** serving as the anode material for sodium-ion battery,the as-preparedα-MnSe/C exhibits enhanced sodium storage capabilities of 416 and 405 mAh g^(-1)at 0.2 and 0.5 A g^(-1)after 100 cycles,*** also shows a superior capacity retention of 275 mA h g^(-1)at 10 A g^(-1)after 2000 cycles,and a rate performance of 279 mA h g^(-1)at 20 A g^(-1).Such sodium storage properties could be attributed to the unique structure offering a highly efficient Na+diffusion kinetics with a diffusion coefficient between 1×10^(-11) and 3×10^(-10) cm^(2) *** density functional theory calculation indicates that the fast Na+diffusion mainly takes place on the(100)plane of MnSe along a V-shaped path because of a relatively low diffusion energy barrier of 0.15 eV.

High piezoelectric properties and low strain hysteresis(H)are both equally necessary for practical applications in precisely controlled piezoelectric devices and *** most of previous reports,where enhanced piezoelectric performance is typically accompanied by large hysteresis in lead-/lead-free-based ceramics,in this work,we report a reconstructed relaxor ferroelectric composition in 0.68Pb(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O3-0.32PbTiO_(3)(0.68PMN-0.32PT)ceramics through the introduction of(Bi_(0.5)Na_(0.5))ZrO(BNZ)to simultaneously achieve low strain hysteresis(~7.68%),superior piezoelectricity(~1040 pC·N^(-l)),and an electric field induced strain of 0.175%.Our work not only paves the way to simultaneously large piezoelectricity and negligible strain hysteresis in ceramic systems,but also lays the foundation for the further development of novel functional materials.

The performance of lithium-sulfur batteries is deteriorated by the inferior conductivity of sulfur,the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides(LiPSs),sluggish redox kinetics of polysulfide intermediates and serious volumetric expansion of *** overcome these challenges,we report a versatile route to prepare multi-functional nanocomposites with tuable hierarchical structure via ammonium hydroxide(NH_(3)·H_(2) O)induced *** versatility of the system has been demonstrated that the organization of the hierarchical structure can be regulated by adding different amounts of NH_(3)·H_(2) O,and WS_(2) and Co_(9)S_(8) with nitrogen-doped carbon coating(denoted as WS_(2)@NC and Co_(9)S_(8)@NC)can be prepared by adding different precursor *** the as-prepared materials are applied for Li-S batteries,the WS_(2)@NC composite exhibits a reversible capacity of 1107.4 mAh g^(-1) at 0.1 C after 500 cycles and even 728.9 mAh g^(-1) at2 C for 1000 cycles,which is significantly better than the Co_(9)S_(8) counterpart and other reported WS_(2) sulfur ***,the advantageous performance of WS_(2) could be attributed to its higher surface area and total pore volume,giving rise to the easier access to electrolyte and better ability to buffer the volume change during the charge/discharge ***,the density function theory(DFT)calculation reveals that the as-prepared WS_(2) has a higher binding energy towards LiPSs as well as a lower energy barrier for Li^(+)diffusion on the surface than Co_(9)S_(8).More significantly,the density of states(DOS)analysis further confirms that the superior performance is mainly ascribed to the more prominent shifting and the more charge compensation from d band of W than Co,which increase electronic concentration and give more hybridization of d-p orbitals in the Fermi level of the adsorbed Li2 S4 to accelerate the lithium polysulfide interfacial redox and conversion dynamics in WS_(2).By proposing this mechan

Growth inhibition and oxidative stress in two species of marine diatoms exposed to 1-phenylethanol

1-phenylethanol (1-PEA) is a flavor extensively used in the production of cosmetics, beverages, and food. The release of 1-PEA into coastal environments has aroused great concern. However, its potential effects on marine organisms are still unknown. In order to provide a better understanding of the ecological risks of 1-PEA in marine environments, this study determined the toxic effects of 1-PEA on two marine diatoms (Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Skeletonema costatum). The diatoms were grown in culture medium containing different concentrations of 1-PEA for 96 h. The contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c, glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were measured at the end of the exposure period. 1-PEA was shown to significantly inhibit the growth of diatoms, with 96-h EC50 values of 257.14 mg/Land 126.46 mg/L in P. tricornutum and S. costatum, respectively. In P. tricornutum, the levels of SOD, CAT, GPx, GSH, and MDA were stimulated only when 1-PEA concentrations were close to or greater than the 96-h EC50 value. However, in S. costatum, the activities of SOD and CAT, and the syntheses of two chlorophylls were inhibited even at an exposure concentration below the 96-h EC50 value. Taken together, these findings indicate a potential ecological risk by discharging 1-PEA into coastal areas and its species-specific toxic effects on marine organisms.

Sp7/Osterix as a zinc finger transcription factor is expressed specifically in osteoblasts. Embryonic lethality of Sp7 knockout mice, however, has prevented from examining the functions of Sp7 in osteoblast and bone formation in live animals. Here we used TALEN, a versatile genome-editing tool, to generate one zebrafish sp7 mutant line. Homozygous sp7-/- mutant zebrafish are able to survive to adulthood. Alizarin Red staining and Micro-CT analysis showed that sp7-/- larvae and adult fish fail to develop normal opercula, and display curved tail fins and severe craniofacial malformation, while Alcian Blue staining showed no obvious cartilage defects in sp7-/- fish. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that a number of osteoblast markers including sppl, phex, collala, and collalb are significantly down-regulated in sp7-/- fish. Furthermore, col10a1a, whose ortholog is the cartilage marker in mice, was shown to be a novel downstream gene of Sp7 as an osteoblast marker in zebrafish. Together, these results suggest that Sp7 is required for zebrafish bone development and zebrafish sp7 mutants provide animal models for investigating novel aspects of bone development.

Southeast China is one of the severe soil degradation areas in China. This paper theoretically examines the impact of some important institutional arrangements and policies, like land management pattern, the rural off-farm employment, land property change and changes in prices of agricultural products, on soil degradation in this area. It further conducts some case studies to confirm the potential relationship between the institutions & policies and soil degradation, applying the surveyed and the second hand data. The paper at last makes some conclusions and proposes some suggestions on how to promote soil conservation by improving the ways of policy decision-making and the effects of policies on land use.

Lithium(Li)metal anodes promise an ultrahigh theoretical energy density and low redox potential,thus being the critical energy material for next-generation ***,the formation of Li dendrites in Li metal anodes remarkably hinders the practical applications of Li metal ***,the dynamic evolution of discrete Li dendrites and aggregated Li dendrites with increasing current densities is visualized by in-situ optical microscopy in conjunction with ex-situ scanning electron *** revealed by the phase field simulations,the formation of aggregated Li dendrites under high current density is attributed to the locally concentrated electric field rather than the depletion of Li *** specifically,the locally concentrated electric field stems from the spatial inhomogeneity on the Li metal surface and will be further enhanced with increasing current *** the above two factors with the help of the constructed phase field model is able to regulate the electrodeposited morphology from aggregated Li dendrites to discrete Li dendrites,and ultimately columnar Li *** methodology and mechanistic understanding established herein give a significant step toward the practical applications of Li metal anodes.

Geochemistry of Pyrite from the Gangcha Gold Deposit, West Qinling Orogen, China: Implications for Ore Genesis

The Gangcha gold deposit was discovered in 2011 in the Xiahe-Hezuo region, West Qinling Orogen, China. Five types of pyrite have been identified in the ore according to the detailed mineral paragenetic studies. Geochemical data are presented for type I pyrite （pyl） rim-core zonation and for the different types of pyrite based on in-situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry （LA-ICP-MS） and electron probe microanalysis （EPMA）. The results show that pyrites are characterized with heterogeneous Au concentrations, which indicate that Au occurs mainly as micro- or nano-particle native inclusions. Time-resolved depth profiles demonstrate that As, Co and Ni occur as solid solutions in pyrite, whereas Cu, Pb, Zn and Ag occur mainly as inclusions. Trace element concentrations differ between rims and cores in pyl, and the differences also exist within different pyrite types. These differences indicate complex chemical evolution of the ore-forming fluids, and the overall geology, geochronology, and stable isotope and pyrite data suggest that the ore-forming fluids were closely linked to magmatic activity during the Triassic Period in West Qinling orogenic belt.
