Microstructure,segregation and precipitate evolution in directionally solidified GH4742 superalloy

The evolution of microstructure,elemental segregation,and precipitation in GH4742 superalloy under a wide range of cooling rates was investigated using zonal melting liquid metal cooling(ZMLMC) *** various nickel-based superalloys,the primary dendrite spacing is significantly linearly correlated with G^(-1/2)V^(-1/4) at high cooling rates,where G and V are temperature gradient and drawing rate,*** the cooling rate decreases,the primary dendrite spacing increases in a dispersive *** secondary dendrite arm spacing is significantly correlated with(GV)^(-0.4) for all cooling rate *** degree of elemental segregation increases and then decreases as the cooling rate increases,which is due to the competition between solute counter-diffusion and dendrite tip *** increasing the solidification rate,the size of γ′,carbides,and non-metallic inclusions gradually *** morphology of the γ′ precipitate changes from plume-like to cubic to *** morphology of carbide changes from block to fine-strip then to *** morphology of carbide is controlled by both dendrite interstitial shape and element *** inclusions are mainly composite inclusions,which usually show the growth of Ti(C,N) with oxide as the heterogeneous nucleation center and carbide on the outer surface of the *** the cooling rate increases,the number density of composite inclusions first increases and then decreases,which is closely related to the elemental segregation behavior.

Petrogenetic model of the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province

Over the last two decades great strides have been made in characterizing the spatial distribution, time sequence,geochemical characteristics, mantle sources, and magma evolution processes for various igneous rocks in the Early Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province(TLIP). This work has laid a solid foundation for revealing the evolutionary processes and genetic models of large igneous provinces(LIPs). This study systematically demonstrates the two-stage melting model for the TLIP based on our previous research work and predecessor achievements, and highlights the two types of magmatic rocks within the *** two-stage melting model suggests that the formation of the TLIP is mantle plume related. The early hot mantle plume caused the low-degree partial melting of the lithosphere mantle, while in the later stage, the plume partially melted due to adiabatic uplift and decompression. Therefore, this model carries signatures of both the "Parana" and "Deccan" models in terms of mantle plume activity. During the early stage, the mantle plume provided the heat required for partial melting of sub-continental lithosphere mantle(SCLM), similar to the "Parana Model", while later the plume acted as the main avenue for melting, as in the "Deccan Model". Basalts that erupted in the first stage have higher 87Sr/86 Sr, lower 143Nd/144 Nd ratios, and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and high field strength elements, indicating a possible origin from the enriched continental lithosphere mantle,similar to the Parana type geochemical features. The basic-ultrabasic intrusive rocks in the second stage exhibit lower 87Sr/86 Sr,higher 143Nd/144 Nd ratios relative to the basalts, consistent with the involvement of a more depleted asthenospheric material,such as a mantle plume, similar to the Deccan type geochemical features. The first stage basalts can be further subdivided into two categories, i.e., Group 1 and Group 2 basalts. Group 2 basalts have lower 87Sr/86 Sr and higher 1

Effect of carbon addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of a typical hard-to-deform Ni-base superalloy

In this paper, the as-cast microstructure, microsegregation, and mechanical properties of GH4151 superalloys with a carbon addition were studied by scanner electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), electron probe microanalysis(EPMA), differential thermal analyzer(DSC), and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD). The results show that the solid solution effect of carbon in alloys is limited, the addition of C from 0.01 to 0.08 wt% significantly refines the secondary dendrite spacing(SDAS) from 61.7 to 57.4 and 51.8 μ*** to the influence of thermal solutal convection, the most severe segregation is found in the C-0.04 alloy, and the solidification ranges of C-0.01, C-0.04, and C-0.08 alloys are 87°C, 96°C, and 83°C, respectively. Owing to the reduced solidification pores and formed finely dispersed carbides, C-0.04 shows excellent ultimate tensile strength(442 MPa) and superior total elongation(1.368%) at 1100°C much better than that of C-0.01(130.7MPa, 0.085%) and C-0.08(248 MPa, 1.026%).

Microstructure evolution and acicular ferrite nucleation in inclusion-engineered steel with modified MgO@C nanoparticle addition

To investigate the effect of surface-modified nanoparticles(NPs)on the inclusion refinement and microstructure evolution,deoxidized experiment ingots with different amounts of modified NPs were manufactured under different cooling *** scanning confocal microscope(LSCM)was hereby used for in-situ observation of the phase transition and microstructural evolution during heat cycle *** results revealed that the inclusion size was always smaller under water quenching than under air cooling,and the number of inclusions was greater under water *** NP addition,the nucleant inclusions were identified as MgAl_(2)O_(4)spinel and irregular TiN inclusion from SEM-EDS measurement and equilibrium calculations using Factsage thermodynamic *** higher cooling rate under water quenching resulted in less polygonal ferrite decrease and the formation of bainite in the *** LSCM experiments showed that ferrite side plates(FSP)always formed on the boundary prior to the formation of acicular ferrite(AF)on the intragranular inclusions,and the start transformation temperatures of FSP and AF phases both lowered after NP *** higher cooling rate and NP addition contributed to AF formation and increased the degree of interlocking of the AF ***,the relationship between the characteristics of inclusions and the kinetics of AF was investigated.

Evolution of microstructure and properties of a novel Ni-based superalloy during stress relief annealing

We discussed the decrease in residual stress,precipitation evolution,and mechanical properties of GH4151 alloy in different annealing temperatures,which were studied by the scanning electron microscope(SEM),high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM),and electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD).The findings reveal that annealing processing has a significant impact on diminishing residual *** the annealing temperature rose from 950 to 1150℃,the majority of the residual stresses were relieved from 60.1 MPa down to 10.9 ***,the stress relaxation mechanism transitioned from being mainly controlled by dislocation slip to a combination of dislocation slip and grain boundary ***,the annealing treatment promotes the decomposition of the Laves,accompanied by the precipitation ofμ-(Mo_(6)Co_(7))starting at 950℃ and reaching a maximum value at 1050℃.The tensile strength and plasticity of the annealing alloy at 1150℃ reached the maximum(1394 MPa,56.1%)which was 131%,200%fold than those of the as-cast alloy(1060 MPa,26.6%),but the oxidation process in the alloy was accelerated at 1150℃.The enhancement in durability and flexibility is primarily due to the dissolution of the brittle phase,along with the shape and dispersal of theγ′phase.

Competitive oxidation behavior of Ni-based superalloy GH4738 at extreme temperature

A high thrust-to-weight ratio poses challenges to the high-temperature performance of Ni-based superalloys. The oxidation behavior of GH4738 at extreme temperatures has been investigated by isothermal and non-isothermal experiments. As a result of the competitive diffusion of alloying elements, the oxide scale included an outermost porous oxide layer (OOL), an inner relatively dense oxide layer (IOL), and an internal oxide zone (IOZ), depending on the temperature and time. A high temperature led to the formation of large voids at the IOL/IOZ interface. At 1200℃, the continuity of the Cr-rich oxide layer in the IOL was destroyed, and thus, spallation occurred. Extension of oxidation time contributed to the size of Al-rich oxide particles with the increase in the IOZ. Based on this finding,the oxidation kinetics of GH4738 was discussed, and the corresponding oxidation behavior at 900-1100℃ was predicted.

Cerium oxide inclusion nucleation mechanism based on classical nucleation theory and two-step nucleation

The dispersion of ceramic nanoparticles is of significance to the microstructure and properties of particulate reinforced metal matrix *** this study,two hybrid enhancers,SiC-graphite and SiC-graphene nanosheets（GNSs）,were incorporated into aluminum matrix composites using powder *** dispersion of the reinforcements and microstructural evolution of the composites were characterized by using Scanning Electron Microscopy,X-Ray Diffraction,Transmission Electron Microscopy,and Raman *** results show that thin GNSs accelerated the deformation of the aluminum particles,and defects were introduced into the carbonaceous phases during the ball milling ***;C;needles generated during hot pressing,and were observed to bridge the aluminum *** with graphite,GNSs were more uniformly dispersed throughout the composite,which in turn restrained grain *** a result,a nanostructured composite（57.7 nm） was successfully produced upon the addition of SiC-GNSs.

Age and genesis of the Myanmar jadeite:Constraints from U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes of zircon inclusions

Myanmar jadeite (jadeitite) is well known for its economical value and distinctive tectonic locality within the collisional belt between India and Eurasian plates. However, it is less studied for its genesis and geodynamic implications due to precipitous topography, adverse weather and local military conflicts in the area. By means of combined ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICPMS techniques, we have carried out in-situ trace elements, U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes for zircon inclusions in a piece of jadeite gem sample. CL imaging suggests that the zircons are metasomatic in origin, and contain mineral inclusions of jadeite and omphacite. Seventy-five analyses on 16 grains of the zircons yield a U-Pb age of 158 ± 2 Ma. The Myanmar zircons differ from other types in that they have no significant Eu anomalies despite high HREE concentrations. Measured 176Hf/177Hf ratios range from 0.282976 to 0.283122, with an average value of 0.283066 ± 7; εHf(t) value of 13.8 ± 0.3 (n=75). These results indicate that the Myanmar jadeite was formed in the Late Jurassic, probably by interaction of fluid released from subducted oceanic slab with mantle wedge. Therefore, its formation has no genetic relationship to the continental collision between Indian and Euroasian plates.

Hf isotopes of zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic basalts in eastern China

Cenozoic basalts are widely distributed in east- ern China, and some of them contain zircon megacrysts which are considered to be constituent mineral of the sub- continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and petrogenetically related to mantle metasomatism induced by addition of crustal materials. Using the Laser Ablation Multiple Collec- tor Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS), zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic ba- salts at Changle in Shandong, Mingxi in Fujian, and Penglai in Hainan provinces have been used for Hf isotopic analyses. The data indicate that there is no significant deviation for the different zircon grains in each locale, except those from Penglai. The obtained 176Hf /177Hf ratios are 0.28302 — 0.28308 for Changle, 0.28297—0.28300 for Mingxi, and 0.28288—0.28293 for Penglai, with corresponding εHf values of 8.7—10.8, 7.0—7.9, and 3.9—5.7, respectively. These data display that there existed some regional heterogeneity, but the Hf model ages clustere in the Phanerozoic. Therefore, it is inferred that metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle be- neath eastern China took place in the Phanerozoic, most probably in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. However, the formation time of the lithospheric mantle is not clearly constrained based on the present Hf isotopic data.
