Conductive and stable polyphenylene/CNT composite membrane for electrically enhanced membrane fouling mitigation

Nanocarbon-based conductive membranes, especially carbon nanotube (CNT)-based membranes, have tremendous potential for wastewater treatment and water purification because of their excellent water permeability and selectivity, as well as their electrochemically enhanced performance (e.g., improved antifouling ability). However, it remains challenging to prepare CNT membranes with high structural stability and high electrical conductivity. In this study, a highly electroconductive and structurally stable polyphenylene/CNT (PP/CNT) composite membrane was prepared by electropolymerizing biphenyl on a CNT hollow fiber membrane. The PP/CNT membrane showed 3.4 and 5.0 times higher electrical conductivity than pure CNT and poly(vinyl alcohol)/CNT (PVA/CNT) membranes, respectively. The structural stability of the membrane was superior to that of the pure CNT membrane and comparable to that of the PVA/CNT membrane. The membrane fouling was significantly alleviated under an electrical assistance of −2.0 V, with a flux loss of only 11.7% after 5 h filtration of humic acid, which is significantly lower than those of PP/CNT membranes without electro-assistance (56.8%) and commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (64.1%). Additionally, the rejection of negatively charged pollutants (humic acid and sodium alginate) was improved by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion. After four consecutive filtration-cleaning cycle tests, the flux recovery rate after backwashing reached 97.2%, which was much higher than those of electricity-free PP/CNT membranes (67.0%) and commercial PVDF membranes (61.1%). This study offers insights into the preparation of stable conductive membranes for membrane fouling control in potential water treatment applications.

Weakly-supervised instance co-segmentation via tensor-based salient co-peak search

Instance co-segmentation aims to segment the co-occurrent instances among two images.This task heavily relies on instance-related cues provided by co-peaks,which are generally estimated by exhaustively exploiting all paired candidates in point-to-point patterns.However,such patterns could yield a high number of false-positive co-peaks,resulting in over-segmentation whenever there are mutual occlusions.To tackle with this issue,this paper proposes an instance co-segmentation method via tensor-based salient co-peak search(TSCPS-ICS).The proposed method explores high-order correlations via triple-to-triple matching among feature maps to find reliable co-peaks with the help of co-saliency detection.The proposed method is shown to capture more accurate intra-peaks and inter-peaks among feature maps,reducing the false-positive rate of co-peak search.Upon having accurate co-peaks,one can efficiently infer responses of the targeted instance.Experiments on four benchmark datasets validate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Rheological Behaviors of Polymers with Nanoparticles Tethered at Each End

The polymer with nanoparticles tethered at each end is a unique model for unraveling the effect of chain ends on the polymer dynamics. We investigated the rheological behavior of this kind of polymer by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The effect of polymer lengths and nanoparticle radii on the complex moduli and viscosity was examined. The dependence of complex moduli on the frequency becomes less pronounced as the polymer is short or the nanoparticle is large. The shear thinning behavior was revealed for these systems, and the scaling exponent of complex viscosity with respect to the frequency was found to change from-1/2 to-3/4 as the polymer shortens or the nanoparticle enlarges. The rheological behavior was further explained by analyzing the mean square distance of nanoparticles. The simulation results were compared with the existing experimental finding, showing an agreement. The work provides information for understanding the chain end effect on polymer rheology.

Urea-induced interfacial engineering enabling highly reversible aqueous zinc-ion battery

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries（AZIBs） have been regarded as prospective rechargeable energy storage devices because of the high theoretical capacity and low redox potential of Zn metal.However,the uncontrollable formation of dendrites and the water-induced side reactions at the Zn/electrolyte interface,and the poor reversibility under a high current density(> 2 mA·cm-2) and large area capacity(>2 mAh·cm-2) still limit the practical applications of AZIBs.Therefore,a strategy that can overcome these difficulties is urgently needed.Here,we introduce an environmentally friendly and low-cost additive,namely urea,to the electrolyte of AZIBs to induce uniform Zn deposition and suppress the side reactions.Measurements of the adsorption behavior,electrochemical characterization,and observations of the morphology revealed the interfacial modification induced by urea on the Zn/electrolyte interface,demonstrating its huge potential in AZIBs.Consequently,the long-term cycling stability（over2100 h） of a Zn/Zn symmetric cell under a high current density of 5 mA·cm-2and a capacity of 5 mAh·cm-2was achieved with a 1 mol·L-1ZnSO4electrolyte with the urea additive.Additionally,the assembled Zn/NH4V4O10full cell with urea exhibited excellent cycling performance and an outstanding average Coulombic efficiency of 99.98%.These results indicate that this is a low-cost and effective additive strategy for realizing highly reversible AZIBs.

Monotropein Induced Apoptosis and Suppressed Cell Cycle Progression in Colorectal Cancer Cells

Objective: To determine whether monotropein has an anticancer effect and explore its potential mechanisms against colorectal cancer(CRC) through network pharmacology and molecular docking combined with experimental verification. Methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to predict potential targets of monotropein against CRC. Cell counting kit assay, plate monoclonal assay and microscopic observation were used to investigate the antiproliferative effects of monotropein on CRC cells HCT116, HT29 and LoVo. Flow cytometry and scratch assay were used to analyze apoptosis and cell cycle, as well as cell migration, respectively in HCT116, HT29, and LoVo cells. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of proteins related to apoptosis, cell cycle, and cell migration, and the expression of proteins key to the Akt pathway. Results: The Gene Ontology and Reactome enrichment analyses indicated that the anticancer potential of monotropein against CRC might be involved in multiple cancer-related signaling pathways. Among these pathways, RAC-beta serine/threonine-protein kinase(Akt1, Akt2), cyclin-dependent kinase 6(CDK6), matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP9), epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR), cell division control protein 42 homolog(CDC42) were shown as the potential anticancer targets of monotropein against CRC. Molecular docking suggested that monotropein may interact with the 6 targets(Akt1, Akt2, CDK6, MMP9, EGFR, CDC42). Subsequently, cell activity of HCT116, HT29 and LoVo cell lines were significantly suppressed by monotropein(P<0.05). Furthermore, our research revealed that monotropein induced cell apoptosis by inhibiting Bcl-2 and increasing Bax, induced G_1–S cycle arrest in colorectal cancer by decreasing the expressions of CyclinD1, CDK4 and CDK6, inhibited cell migration by suppressing the expressions of CDC42 and MMP9(P<0.05), and might play an anticancer role through Akt signaling pathway. Relationship between clinical belonging,professional identity,and nursing information ability among nursing interns:Model construction

BACKGROUND Clinical belonging refers to the feeling that clinical medical staff feel recognized and accepted by others or groups.The level of clinical belonging of nursing interns affects students’learning motivation and confidence,which in turn affects their clinical practice behavior.AIM To explore the effects of professional identity and nursing information ability on clinical belonging among nursing interns and establish a relationship model for these factors.METHODS The researchers used the convenience sampling method to select 682 nursing interns from China.The survey was conducted using a general information questionnaire,clinical sense of belonging scale,nursing information ability self-assessment scale,and a nursing student professional identity questionnaire.The mediating effect of nursing information ability between their professional identity and clinical sense of belonging was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and the path analysis in structural equation modeling.RESULTS The total scores of clinical belonging,professional identity,and nursing information ability of nursing interns were(104.29±13.11)points,(57.89±7.16)points,and(70.29±6.20)points,respectively.Nursing information ability had a direct effect on the clinical sense of belonging(effect value=0.46,P<0.05).Occupational identity had a direct effect(effect value=0.52,P<0.05)and an indirect effect(effect value=0.21,P<0.05)on clinical belonging.CONCLUSION Nursing administrators in nursing colleges and hospitals should take effective measures to improve the professional identity and nursing information ability of nursing interns,as well as the clinical sense of belonging among nursing interns.

Ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS)represents pre-invasive breast carcinoma.In untreated cases,25-60%DCIS progress to invasive ductal carcinoma(IDC).The challenge lies in distinguishing between non-progressive and progressive DCIS,often resulting in over-or under-treatment in many cases.With increasing screen-detected DCIS in these years,the nature of DCIS has aroused worldwide attention.A deeper understanding of the biological nature of DCIS and the molecular journey of the DCIS-IDC transition is crucial for more effective clinical management.Here,we reviewed the key signaling pathways in breast cancer that may contribute to DCIS initiation and progression.We also explored the molecular features of DCIS and IDC,shedding light on the progression of DCIS through both inherent changes within tumor cells and alterations in the tumor microenvironment.In addition,valuable research tools utilized in studying DCIS including preclinical models and newer advanced technologies such as single-cell sequencing,spatial transcriptomics and artificial intelligence,have been systematically summarized.Further,we thoroughly discussed the clinical advancements in DCIS and IDC,including prognostic biomarkers and clinical managements,with the aim of facilitating more personalized treatment strategies in the future.Research on DCIS has already yielded significant insights into breast carcinogenesis and will continue to pave the way for practical clinical applications.

Formation and properties of a Zr-based amorphous coating by laser cladding

(Zr0.53Al0.1Ni0.05Cu0.3Ti0.02)99Y1（at%） coating with amorphous layer of about 180 μm thick was prepared on a steel substrate by using laser cladding method.The coating is compact and shows good metallurgical bonding with substrate.The microstructure,microhardness and corrosion behavior along the depth from the coating surface to the substrate were investigated.It is found that a gradient structure consisted of amorphous surface layer,amorphous-crystalline transitional layer and substrate is formed after the laser cladding.The microhardness and corrosion behavior exhibit variation with the microstructural evolution at different depths from the coating surface.The microhardness and corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt%NaCl solution of the amorphous surface layer are comparable to those of the as-cast Zr-based BMG with the same composition,and higher than those of the steel substrate.

Industrial coking facilities are an important emission source for volatile organic compounds(VOCs).This study analyzed the atmospheric VOC characteristics within an industrial coking facility and its surrounding environment.Average concentrations of total VOCs(TVOCs)in the surrounding residential activity areas(R1 and R2),the coking facility(CF)and the control area(CA)were determined to be 138.5,47.8,550.0,and 15.0μg/m^(3),respectively.The cold drum process and coking and quenching areas within the coking facility were identified as the main polluting processes.The spatial variation in VOCs composition was analyzed,showing that VOCs in the coking facility and surrounding areas were mainly dominated by aromatic compounds such as BTX(benzene,toluene,and xylenes)and naphthalene,with concentrations being negatively correlated with the distance from the coking facility(p<0.01).The sources of VOCs in different functional areas across the monitoring area were analyzed,finding that coking emissions accounted for 73.5%,33.3% and 27.7% of TVOCs in CF,R1 and R2,respectively.These results demonstrated that coking emissions had a significant impact on VOC concentrations in the areas surrounding coking facility.This study evaluates the spatial variation in exposure to VOCs,providing important information for the influence of VOCs concentration posed by coking facility to surrounding residents and the development of strategies for VOC abatement.

Patient satisfaction and follow-up adherence to glaucoma case management clinic in China

AIM:To assess glaucoma patient satisfaction and follow-up adherence in case management and identify associated predictors to improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes.METHODS:In this cross-sectional study,a total of 119 patients completed a Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire-18 and a sociodemographic questionnaire.Clinical data was obtained from the case management system.Follow-up adherence was defined as completing each follow-up within±30d of the scheduled time set by ophthalmologists during the study period.RESULTS:Average satisfaction scored 78.65±7,with an average of 4.39±0.58 across the seven dimensions.Age negatively correlated with satisfaction(P=0.008),whilst patients with follow-up duration of 2 or more years reported higher satisfaction(P=0.045).Multivariate logistics regression analysis revealed that longer follow-up durations were associated with lower follow-up adherence(OR=0.97,95%CI,0.95-1.00,P=0.044).Additionally,patients with suspected glaucoma(OR=2.72,95%CI,1.03-7.20,P=0.044)and those with an annual income over 100000 Chinese yuan demonstrated higher adherence(OR=5.57,95%CI,1.00-30.89,P=0.049).CONCLUSION:The case management model proves effective for glaucoma patients,with positive adherence rates.The implementation of this model can be optimized in the future based on the identified factors and extended to glaucoma patients in more hospitals.
