AIM: To examine the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also known as CCN2, in gastric carcinoma (GC), and the correlation between the expression of CTGF, clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes of patients with GC. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two GC patients were included in the present study. All patients were followed up for at least 5 years. Proteins of CTGF were detected using the Powervision two-step immunostaining method. RESULTS: Of the specimens from 122 GC patients analyzed for CTGF expression, 58 (58/122, 47.5%) had a high CTGF expression in cytoplasm of gastric carcinoma cells and 64 (64/122, 52.5%) had a low CTGF expression. Patients with a high CTGF expression showed a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis than those with a low CTGF expression (P = 0.032). Patients with a high CTGF expression had significantly lower 5-year survival rate than those with a low CTGF expression (27.6% vs 46.9%, P = 0.0178), especially those staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ (35.7% vs 65.2%, P = 0.0027). CONCLUSION: GC patients with an elevated CTGF expression have more lymph node metastases and a shorter survival time. CTGF seems to be an independent prognostic factor for the successful differentiation of high-risk GC patients staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ. Over-expression of CTGF in human GC cells results in an increased aggressive ability.

Using metallo-organatic compound TPT as the source of Ti, H13 mould steels were coated with Ti(CN) films by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) and the properties of Ti(CN) films were studied. Under the appropriate temperature and pressure, Ti(CN) films on H13 mould steel surfaces had the highest micro-hardness of HV1760 at 500°C, and the films showed excellent anti-oxidation property below 500°C. The lifetime of Ti(CN)-coated augers and dies could be enhanced 7 and 4 times longer than those of untreated respectively.

AIM: To study the trends of major causes of visual impairment(VI) in adults in Sichuan,China and evaluate the effect of aging on the trends. ·METHODS: We used data from the National Sample Survey on Disabilities(NSSD) in Sichuan province conducted in 1987 and 2006. The age-adjusted prevalence of major causes of VI and the prevalence stratified by age in each cause were calculated and compared. The association between age and each cause of VI was also analyzed.·RESULTS: Retinal disease increased and became the second leading cause of VI in 2006 while blinding trachoma decreased markedly. Cataract and non-trachomatous corneal diseases were among the leading causes of VI in both years. We found associations between age and causes of VI,with age showing the strongest association with cataract and relatively lower associations with other causes. · CONCLUSION: In the last two decades,dramatic changes occurred in the major causes of VI with significantly increased retinal disease and decreased blinding trachoma. Aging of the population might be an important factor accounting for the changed trends of VI. Understanding the prevalence of VI,its major causes and trends over time can assist in prioritizing and developing effective interventional strategies and monitoring their impact.

Background： Na^＋/Ca^2＋ exchanger （NCX） plays a crucial role in pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsion. However, it is unclear whether NCX is critically involved in hyperthermia-induced convulsion. In this study, we examined the potential changes in NCX3 in the hippocampus and cerebrocortex of rats with hyperthermia-induced convulsion. Methods： Twenty-one Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to control group, convulsion-prone group and convulsion-resistant group （n = 7 in each group）. Whole-cell patch-clamp method was used to record NCX currents. Both the Western blotting analysis and immunofluorescence labeling techniques were used to examine the expression of NCX3. Results： NCX currents were decreased in rats after febrile convulsion. Compared to the control group, NCX3 expression was decreased by about 40% and 50% in the hippocampus and cerebrocortex of convulsion-prone rats, respectively. Furthermore, the extent of reduction in NCX3 expression seemed to correlate with the number of seizures. Conclusions： There is a significant reduction in NCX3 expression in rats with febrile convulsions. Our findings also indicate a potential link between NCX3 expression, febrile convulsion in early childhood, and adult onset of epilepsy.

Accurate universal time is essential to longitude determination and is also widely used for practical purposes. The work of universal time service is generally divided into two steps: (i) transmission of precise radio time signals based on the preliminary results of astronomical time observations, and (ii) correction of the small discrepancies in these signals after the analysis of a large amount of astronomical time observations. These corrections are the final results of time service, and their precision shows the quality of the time service work. Cold is an important factor contributing to the high incidence of *** order to explore the mechanisms of cold-induced *** study observed whether large conductance calcium-activated potassium channel BKCa) on vascular smooth muscle cells（VSMC） played a role in the development of hypertension during chronic exposure to ***-eight rats were divided into cold-treated group and control group randomly,then,one subgroup of the cold-treated and one subgroup of control rats were sacrificed at 2,4,6 and 8 *** blood pressure started to rise after 2 weeks of cold exposure and continued to increase, reaching a maximal level by the 6th week of exposure to cold,and then pressure beginned to decrease slowly throughout the remainder of the *** BKCa,current and BKCa peak current density in aortic VSMC increased significantly as the time of exposure to cold went until the 6th week exposure to ***,the expression of L-type Cav1.2 channelα1C subunit mRNA in the cold-treated rats were higher than those in the control *** stress increased expression of L-type Cav1.2 channelα1d subunit mRNA, indicate that cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration increased with cold-treated extended at 6 weeks in the beginning,resulting in increasing blood *** channel currents increased in this progress as the negative-feedback regulators of vascular *** results indicated that activation of BKCa channel could reduce blood pressure（7th and 8th week） in hypertensive subjects.
