Physiochemical and biological characteristics of fouling on landfill leachate treatment systems surface

Fouling of landfill leachate,a biofilm formation process on the surface of the collection system,migration pipeline and treatment system causes low efficiency of leachate transportation and treatment and increases cost for maintenance of those facilities.In addition,landfill leachate fouling might accumulate pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs),posing threats to the environment.Characterization of the landfill leachate fouling and its associated environmental behavior is essential for the management of fouling.In this study,physicochemical and biological properties of landfill leachate fouling and the possible accumulation capacity of pathogens and ARGs were investigated in nitrification(aerobic condition)and denitrification(anaerobic condition)process during landfill leachate biological treatment,respectively.Results show that microbial(bacterial,archaeal,eukaryotic,and viral)community structure and function(carbon fixation,methanogenesis,nitrification and denitrification)differed in fouling under aerobic and anaerobic conditions,driven by the supplemental leachate water quality.Aerobic fouling had a higher abundance of nitrification and denitrification functional genes,while anaerobic fouling harbored a higher abundance of carbon fixation and methanogenesis genes.Both forms of leachate fouling had a higher abundance of pathogens and ARGs than the associated leachate,suggesting the accumulation capacity of fouling on biotic pollutants.Specifically,aerobic fouling harbored three orders of magnitude higher multidrug resistance genes mex D than its associated leachate.This finding provides fundamental knowledge on the biological properties of leachate fouling and suggests that leachate fouling might harbor significant pathogens and ARGs.

Mechanism Design for Ancillary Service Market Considering Social Welfare and Fairness

Increasing penetration of distributed energy resources in the distribution network(DN)is threatening safe operation of the DN,which necessitates setup of the ancillary service market in the DN.In the ancillary service market,distribution system operator(DSO)is responsible for safety of the DN by procuring available capacities of aggregators.Unlike existing studies,this paper proposes a novel market mechanism composed of two parts:choice rule and payment rule.The proposed choice rule simultaneously considers social welfare and fairness,encouraging risk-averse aggregators to participate in the ancillary service market.It is then formulated as a linear programming problem,and a distributed solution using the multi-cut Benders decomposition is presented.Moreover,successful implementation of the choice rule depends on each aggregator’s truthful adoption of private parameters.Therefore,a payment rule is also designed,which is proved to possess two properties:incentive compatibility and individual rationality.Simulation results demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed choice rule on improving fairness and verify properties of the payment rule.

Symbiotic fungi are involved in plant flooding tolerance,while the underlying mechanism is not yet known.Since polyamines(PAs)and proline are also associated with stress tolerance,it is hypothesized that the enhancement of stress resistance by symbiotic fungi is associated with changes in PAs and/or proline.The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of inoculation with Funneliformis mosseae and Serendipita indica on plant growth,PAs,and proline and the metabolisms in peach(Prunus persica)under flooding.Two-week flooding did not affect root colonization frequence of F.mosseae,while it promoted root colonization frequence of S.indica.Under flooding,plants inoculated with F.mosseae and S.indica maintained relatively higher growth rates than uninoculated plants.Funneliformis mosseae promoted root ornithine(Orn)contentration and arginine(Arg)and Orn decarboxylase activities under flooding,which promoted putrescine(Put),cadaverine(Cad),and spermidine(Spd)contentrations.Conversely,S.indica decreased contentrations of Arg,Orn,and agmatine and Arg decarboxylase activities,thus decreasing PA contentrations under flooding.Polyamines were negatively correlated with the expression of PA uptake transporter genes,PpPUT1 and PpPUT2,in peach.Polyamine transporter genes of F.mosseae(FmTPO)and S.indica(SiTPO)were regulated by flooding,of which FmTPO1 was positively correlated with Put,Cad,and Spd,along with positive correlations of Spd with SiTPO1,SiTPO2,and SiTPO4.Under flooding,F.mosseae decreased proline concentration,while S.indica increased proline concentration and correlated with expression of a△^(1)-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase gene,PpP5CS2.It was thus concluded that F.mosseae modulated polyamine accumulation,while S.indica induced proline accumulation to tolerate flooding.

With the booming development of fifth-generation network technology and Internet of Things,the number of end-user devices(EDs)and diverse applications is surging,resulting in massive data generated at the edge of networks.To process these data eficiently,the innovative mobile edge computing(MEC)framework has emerged to guarantee low latency and enable eficient computing close to the user traffic.Recently,federated learning(FL)has demonstrated its empirical success in edge computing due to its privacy-preserving advantages.Thus,it becomes a promising solution for analyzing and processing distributed data on EDs in various machine learning tasks,which are the major workloads in MEC.Unfortunately,EDs are typically powered by batteries with limited capacity,which brings challenges when performing energy-intensive FL tasks.To address these challenges,many strategies have been proposed to save energy in FL.Considering the absence of a survey that thoroughly summarizes and classifies these strategies,in this paper,we provide a comprehensive survey of recent advances in energy-efficient strategies for FL in MEC.Specifically,we first introduce the system model and energy consumption models in FL,in terms of computation and communication.Then we analyze the challenges regarding improving energy efficiency and summarize the energy-efficient strategies from three perspectives:learning-based,resource allocation,and client selection.We conduct a detailed analysis of these strategies,comparing their advantages and disadvantages.Additionally,we visually illustrate the impact of these strategies on the performance of FL by showcasing experimental results.Finally,several potential future research directions for energy-efficient FL are discussed.

As a ceramic material,AlN has very good thermophysical and mechanical properties.In addition,AlN is an effective refining agent for Mg alloys because it has a lattice constant similar to that of Mg.Therefore,AlN is an ideal reinforcement for magnesium matrix composites(MMCs),and is attracting increasing attention.This review addresses the development of preparation technologies for AlN-reinforced Mg matrix composites.The mainstream preparation techniques include stir casting,melt infiltration,powder metallurgy,and in-situ methods.In addition,the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are analyzed in depth,and it is pointed out that the next direction for the preparation of high-performance AlN-reinforced MMCs is less aluminization and multiple technologies integration.

Joint Transmit and Reflective Beamforming Design for Active IRS-Aided SWIPT Systems

To further improve the performance of passive intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)-assisted communication systems and mitigate the serious path loss due to “double-fading ” of IRS-assisted links, an active IRS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer(SWIPT) system is investigated. This paper jointly optimizes the transmit beamforming at the base station(BS) and the phase shifts at the active IRS in order to maximize the power collected by the energy harvesting receiver under both perfect and imperfect channel state information(CSI)states, subject to the signal-to-interference-noise ratio constraint of the information decoding receiver, and the power constraints of the BS/IRS. Under perfect CSI, the alternating optimization algorithm is utilized for obtaining the transmit beamforming at the BS and the phase shifts at the active IRS. For each subproblem, we first transform nonconvex objective function and constraints into convex ones by performing a first-order Taylor expansion. Then, each subproblem is solved by using the interior point method. Given that obtaining perfect CSI is impractical, two robust beamforming designs are proposed for imperfect CSI case. Under the bounded CSI error model, we first transform the non-convex optimization problem into two semidefinite programming subproblems, and then solve each subproblem based on S-procedure and sequential rank-one constraint relaxation(SROCR) techniques. Under the stochastic CSI error model, the alternating optimization method is applied in an iterative manner based on Bernstein-type inequality and SROCR technique. Simulation results show that both robust and non-robust schemes for active IRS-assisted SWIPT systems can achieve extremely superior performance over conventional passive IRS-assisted systems under the same overall power budget.

Automated identification of steel weld defects,a convolutional neural network improved machine learning approach

This paper proposes a machine-learning-based methodology to automatically classify different types of steel weld defects,including lack of the fusion,porosity,slag inclusion,and the qualified(no defects)cases.This methodology solves the shortcomings of existing detection methods,such as expensive equipment,complicated operation and inability to detect internal defects.The study first collected percussed data from welded steel members with or without weld defects.Then,three methods,the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients,short-time Fourier transform(STFT),and continuous wavelet transform were implemented and compared to explore the most appropriate features for classification of weld statuses.Classic and convolutional neural network-enhanced algorithms were used to classify,the extracted features.Furthermore,experiments were designed and performed to validate the proposed method.Results showed that STFT achieved higher accuracies(up to 96.63%on average)in the weld status classification.The convolutional neural network-enhanced support vector machine(SVM)outperformed six other algorithms with an average accuracy of 95.8%.In addition,random forest and SVM were efficient approaches with a balanced trade-off between the accuracies and the computational efforts.

In this paper,we consider the limit distribution of the error density function estima-tor in the rst-order autoregressive models with negatively associated and positively associated random errors.Under mild regularity assumptions,some asymptotic normality results of the residual density estimator are obtained when the autoregressive models are stationary process and explosive process.In order to illustrate these results,some simulations such as con dence intervals and mean integrated square errors are provided in this paper.It shows that the residual density estimator can replace the density\estimator"which contains errors.

Sepsis is a potentially fatal condition characterized by the failure of one or more organs due to a disordered host response to infection.The development of sepsis is closely linked to immune dysfunction.As a result,immunotherapy has gained traction as a promising approach to sepsis treatment,as it holds the potential to reverse immunosuppression and restore immune balance,thereby improving the prognosis of septic patients.However,due to the highly heterogeneous nature of sepsis,it is crucial to carefully select the appropriate patient population for immunotherapy.This review summarizes the current and evolved treatments for sepsis-induced immunosuppression to enhance clinicians'understanding and practical application of immunotherapy in the management of sepsis.
