Asian cultivated rice shows allelic variation in sodium transporter,OsHKT1;5,correlating with shoot sodium exclusion(salinity tolerance).These changes map to intra/extracellularly-oriented loops that occur between four transmembrane-P loop-transmembrane(MPM)motifs in OsHKT1;5.HKT1;5 sequences from more recently evolved Oryza species(O.sativa/O.officinalis complex species)contain two expansions that involve two intracellularly oriented loops/helical regions between MPM domains,potentially governing transport characteristics,while more ancestral HKT1;5 sequences have shorter intracellular loops.We compared homology models for homoeologous OcHKT 1;5-K and OcHKT1;5-L from halophytic O.coarctata to identify complementary amino acid residues in OcHKT1;5-L that potentially enhance affinity for Na+.Using haplotyping,we showed that Asian cultivated rice accessions only have a fraction of HKT1;5 diversity available in progenitor wild rice species(O.nivara and O.rufipogon).Progenitor HKT1;5 haplotypes can thus be used as novel potential donors for enhancing cultivated rice salinity tolerance.Within Asian rice accessions,10 non-synonymous HKT1;5 haplotypic groups occur.More HKT1;5 haplotypic diversities occur in cultivated indica gene pool compared to japonica.Predominant Haplotypes 2 and 10 occur in mutually exclusive japonica and indica groups,corresponding to haplotypes in O.sativa salt-sensitive and salt-tolerant landraces,respectively.This distinct haplotype partitioning may have originated in separate ancestral gene pools of indica and japonica,or from different haplotypes selected during domestication.Predominance of specific HKT1;5 haplotypes within the 3000 rice dataset may relate to eco-physiological fitness in specific geo-climatic and/or edaphic contexts.

MXenes,a class of two-dimensional materials,have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties and versatile applications in various fields.This review provides a comprehensive overview of MXene synthesis methods,highlighting their distinctive layered structure and tunable properties through surface functionalization.The focus then shifts to their remarkable role in supercapacitor technology.MXenes exhibit high electrical conductivity,large surface areas,and tailored surface chemistry,making them promising candidates for energy storage in supercapacitors.The paper discusses the interplay of electric double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance mechanisms within MXenebased electrodes,detailing recent research efforts aimed at optimizing their energy storage performance.Through a combination of theoretical insights and experimental findings,the potential of MXenes to revolutionize supercapacitor technology emerges,offering prospects for high-energy-density and long-lasting energy storage solutions.Additionally,this review highlights recent advances in MXenebased supercapacitors,including novel electrode designs,electrolyte engineering,and hybrid materials,showcasing the dynamic evolution of MXene-based supercapacitor research.This comprehensive overview aims to provide a thorough understanding of MXenes'synthesis,properties,and their pivotal role in advancing supercapacitor technology,while also encompassing the latest breakthroughs in this rapidly evolving field.

BACKGROUND Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists(GLP-1 RA)are effective in diabetes and obesity,reducing hyperglycemia by increasing insulin release and delaying gastric emptying.However,they can cause gastroparesis,raising concerns about aspiration during procedures.Recent guidelines advise discontinuing GLP-1 RA before surgery to reduce the risk of pulmonary aspiration.AIM To evaluate the effect of GLP-1 RAs on gastric residual contents during endosco-pic procedures.METHODs A retrospective chart review at BronxCare Health system,New York,from January 2019 to October 2023,assessed gastric residue and aspiration in GLP-1 RA patients undergoing endoscopic procedures.Two groups were compared based on dietary status before the procedure.Data included demographics,symptoms of gastroparesis,opiate use,hemoglobin A1c,GLP-1 agonist indication,endo-scopic details,and aspiration occurrence.IBM sPss was used for analysis,cal-culating means,standard deviations,and applying Pearson’s chi-square and t-tests for associations,with Ps being significant.REsULTs During the study,306 patients were included,with 41.2%on a clear liquid/low residue diet and 58.8%on a regular diet before endoscopy.Most patients(63.1%)were male,with a mean age of 60±12 years.The majority(85.6%)were on GLP-1 RAs for diabetes,and 10.1%reported digestive symptoms before endoscopy.Among those on a clear liquid diet,1.5%had residual food at endoscopy compared to 10%on a regular diet,which was statistically significant(P=0.03).Out of 31 patients with digestive symptoms,13%had residual food,all from the regular diet group(P=0.130).No complications were reported during or after the procedures.CONCLUsION The study reflects a significant rise in GLP-1 RA use for diabetes and obesity.A 24-hour liquid diet seems safe for endoscopic procedures without aspiration.Patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms might have a higher residual food risk,though not statistically significant.Further research is needed to assess risks based on diabetes duration,gast

The steady decline in malaria cases and deaths in recent years is a step ahead toward elimination;however,an increasing number of reports of antimalarial and insecticide resistance highlight the importance of having newer approaches to achieve the goal in the stipulated time frame.Therefore,having an effective and durable malaria vaccine is extremely crucial,which can complement the tools currently in use.Although the malaria vaccine development efforts initiated in the 1910’s with the first attempts to develop a malaria vaccine involved inoculating humans with live,attenuated strains of the malaria parasite but the efforts have been intensified over the previous decade,resulting in several significant developments.

India's healthcare system continues to place the highest priority on the fight against malaria[1].Malaria elimination program has received considerable attention from both the public and private sectors,resulting in a significant drop in malaria cases[2].In 2022,a total of 176000 million cases of malaria were reported in India,in which Plasmodium(P.)falciparum has contributed 57.0%and 42.3%were P.vivax cases and limited cases of P.malariae and P.ovale.

Enantioselective organocatalytic synthesis of the chiral chromenes by domino oxa-Michael-aldol reaction

The proline based chiral organocatalyst has been found to be an efficient catalyst for the facile synthesis of substituted 2-aryl-2 H-chromenes-3-carbaldehyde. We envisioned that the iminium interaction between chiral amino catalysts and a,b-unsaturated carbonyl group was beneficial along with thiourea group as hydrogen bond donor, heterocyclic amines as general base in the domino oxa-Michael-aldol reaction. This catalytic system provided the products in good to high yields（73%–96%） with excellent enantioselectivity（up to 97%） and reasonable reaction time. The atom economy, high yield and mild reaction conditions are some of the important features of this protocol.

Effect of hole-transporting materials on the photovoltaic performance and stability of all-ambient-processed perovskite solar cells

High-efficiency perovskite solar cells（PsCs） reported hitherto have been mostly prepared in a moisture and oxygen-free glove-box atmosphere, which hampers upscaling and real-time performance assessment of this exciting photovoltaic technology. In this work, we have systematically studied the feasibility of allambient-processing of PsCs and evaluated their photovoltaic performance. It has been shown that phasepure crystalline tetragonal MAPbI;perovskite films are instantly formed in ambient air at room temperature by a two-step spin coating process, undermining the need for dry atmosphere and post-annealing.All-ambient-processed PsCs with a configuration of FTO/TiO;/MAPbI;/spiro-OMeTAD/Au achieve opencircuit voltage（990 mV） and short-circuit current density（20.31 mA/cm;） comparable to those of best reported glove-box processed devices. Nevertheless, device power conversion efficiency is still constrained at 5% by the unusually low fill-factor of 0.25. Dark current–voltage characteristics reveal poor conductivity of hole-transporting layer caused by lack of oxidized spiro-OMe TAD species, resulting in high seriesresistance and decreased fill-factor. The study also establishes that the above limitations can be readily overcome by employing an inorganic p-type semiconductor, copper thiocyanate, as ambient-processable hole-transporting layer to yield a fill-factor of 0.54 and a power conversion efficiency of 7.19%. The present findings can have important implications in industrially viable fabrication of large-area PsCs.

Bitter melon： a panacea for inflammation and cancer

Nature is a rich source of medicinal plants and their products that are useful for treatment of various diseases and disorders. Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon or bitter gourd, is one of such plants known for its biological activities used in traditional system of medicines. This plant is cultivated in all over the world, including tropical areas of Asia, Amazon, east Africa, and the Caribbean and used as a vegetable as well as folk medicine. All parts of the plant, including the fruit, are commonly consumed and cooked with different vegetables, stir-fried, stuffed or used in small quantities in soups or beans to give a slightly bitter flavor and taste. The plant is reported to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti-obesity, and immunomodulatory activities. The plant extract inhibits cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, autophagy and inhibiting cancer stem cells. The plant is rich in bioactive chemical constituents like cucurbitane type triterpenoids, triterpene glycosides, phenolic acids, flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, fatty acids, and proteins. some of the isolated compounds(Kuguacin J, Karaviloside XI, Kuguaglycoside C, Momordicoside Q-U, Charantin, α-eleostearic acid) and proteins(α-Momorcharin, RNase MC2, MAP30) possess potent biological activity. In the present review, we are summarizing the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities of Momordica charantia along with a short account of important chemical constituents, providing a basis for establishing detail biological activities of the plant and developing novel drug molecules based on the active chemical constituents.

Background:There is overwhelming evidence that periodontal disease and dental caries affect the majority of populations and that western culture and lifestyle may have a profound influence on oral health,especially in adults.The present study was performed to determine the effect of westernization on the oral health of college students of Udaipur City,Rajasthan.Methods:A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among students attending various professional and non-professional bachelor's degree colleges of Udaipur City,Rajasthan,India,from March 2013 to May 2013.Eight hundred students were selected based on a two-stage random sampling procedure.Westernization was assessed by a self-administered structured questionnaire.Periodontal status,dental caries status and malocclusion were assessed according to World Health Organization(WHO) criteria(1997).statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square and Multivariate logistic regression.The confidence level and level of significance were set at 95% and 5%,respectively.Results:The present study suggested that adverse habits,listening to English music and preferring English food had a significant association with dental caries and periodontal diseases.Malocclusion also showed a significant relationship with consuming English food for snacks and desserts.Multivariate analysis revealed a significantly greater odds ratio(OR) for periodontal disease and dental caries among those who preferred English food for lunch.Conclusion:Based on the results of the present study,there is an association between westernization and oral health.

Momordica charantia trypsin inhibitor Ⅱ inhibits growth and development of Helicoverpa armigera

Bitter gourd （Momordica charantia L.） seeds contain several squash-type serine proteinase inhibitors （PIs）, which inhibit the digestive proteinases of the polyphagous insect pest Helicoverpa armigera. In the present work isolation of a DNA sequence encoding the mature peptide of a trypsin inhibitor McTI-Ⅱ, its cloning and expression as a recombinant protein using Pichia pastoris have been reported. Recombinant McTI-Ⅱ inhibited bovine trypsin at 1 ： 1 molar ratio, as expected, but did not inhibit chymotrypsin or elastase. McTI-Ⅱ also strongly inhibited trypsin-like proteinases （81% inhibition） as well as the total proteolytic activity of digestive proteinases （70% inhibition） from the midgut of H. armigera larvae. The insect larvae fed with McTI-Ⅱ-incorporated artificial diet suffered over 70% reduction in the average larval weight after 12 days of feeding. Moreover, ingestion of McTI-Ⅱ resulted in 23% mortality in the larval population. The strong antimetabolic activity of McTI-Ⅱ toward H. armigera indicates its probable use in developing insect tolerance in susceptible plants.
