Factors Affecting Visual Outcom. Following Surgical Treatm.nt of Cataracts in Children

Purpose: To assess treatm.nt results in pediatric patients with cataracts, to evaluate the efficacy of various surgical interventions, and to determ.ne the factors that affect visual outcom.s. m.thods: This is aProspective cohort study. We studied a consecutive series of pediatric patients with congenital, developing, or traum.tic cataracts who underwent surgery between January, 1999 and April, 2012 at Drashti Netralaya, Dahod. Patient dem.graphics, cataract type, presenting sym.tom., surgical intervention, postoperative visual acuity, and follow-up refractive changes were recorded. Results: In total, 1305 eyes of 1047 children were included: unilateral cataracts were present in 786 (60.2%) eyes. There were 610 (46.7%) traum.tic and 695 (53.3%) non-traum.tic cases. Ages at surgery ranged from.1 to 215 m.nths. Eyes were grouped by the surgical intervention perform.d: Group 1, pars plana approach including 366 (28%) eyes that underwent lensectom.es, and Group 2, anterior approach, including 939 (71.9%) eyes that underwent phacoem.lsification ± IOL placem.nt or sm.ll incision cataract surgery ± IOL placem.nt. The m.an follow-up tim. was 117 days. Ultim.tely, 113 (30.9%) Group 1 and 503 (53.6%) Group 2 patients achieved a visual acuity better than 20/60 (P m.s, pretreatm.nt vision, IOL insertion, and etiology were all significantly related (all P m.. Conclusions: Surgical treatm.nt with intraocular lens im.lantation for children with congenital, developm.ntal, or traum.tic cataracts is an effective treatm.nt for visual rehabilitation. Visual outcom. was significantly better in cases of traum.tic cataracts versus non-traum.tic cataracts.

Strabism.s in Cases of Cataract in Pediatric Age Group

Purpose: To investigate the epidem.ology of strabism.s in cases of pediatric cataracts. To assess visual outcom. following orthoptic treatm.nt for am.lyopia in cases of cataracts in the pediatric age group. m.thods: This was a retrospective cohort study. We investigated a consecutive series of pediatric patients with congenital, developing, or traum.tic cataracts who underwent surgery between January 1999 and April 2012 at our center. Patient dem.graphics, cataract type, presenting sym.tom., surgical intervention, postoperative visual acuity, and follow-up refractive changes were recorded. Results: In total, 1331 eyes of 1043 children were included: unilateral cataracts were present in 785 (59%) eyes. There were 605 (45.5%) traum.tic and 726 (54.5%) non-traum.tic cases. Ages at surgery ranged from.1 to 215 m.nths. All eyes were exam.ned for ocular alignm.nt;66 (5%) were found to m.nifest strabism.s. Deviation was significantly associated with age at intervention (p p m. following am.lyopia therapy (p 0.001). Conclusions: Surgical treatm.nt with intraocular lens im.lantation in children with congenital, developm.ntal, or traum.tic cataracts is effective for visual rehabilitation. Orthoptic treatm.nt m.de a significant difference in visual outcom. (p < 0.001).

The response of cells to physical or chem.cal stim.li is com.lex,unfolding on tim.-scales from.seconds to days,with or without de novo protein synthesis,and involving signaling processes that are transient or *** com.ining the technology of m.crofluidics that supports fast and precise execution of a variety of cell handling operations,with that of m.ss spectrom.try detection that facilitates an accurate and com.lex characterization of the protein com.lem.nt of cells,in this work,we developed a platform.that supports(near)real-tim. sam.ling and proteom.level capturing of cellular responses to a perturbation such as treatm.nt with *** geom.tric design of the chip supports three critical features:(a)capture of a sufficient num.er of cells to m.et the detection lim.t requirem.nts of m.ss spectrom.try instrum.ntation,(b)fluid delivery for uniform.stim.lation of the resident cells,and(c)fast cell recovery,lysis and processing for accurate sam.ling of tim.-sensitive cellular responses to a *** sim.lations and m.croscopy were used to predict and evaluate the flow behavior inside the m.crofluidic *** analysis of the cellular extracts generated by the chip experim.nts revealed that the identified proteins were representative of all cellular locations,exosom.s,and m.jor biological processes related to proliferation and signaling,dem.nstrating that the device holds prom.sing potential for integration into com.lex lab-on-chip workflows that address system. biology *** applicability of the chips to study tim.-sensitive cellular responses is discussed in term. of technological challenges and biological relevance.

Traum.tic cataracts in children: Visual outcom.

AIm. To review results of traum.tic cataracts in ***: Only those pediatric patients who fitted in the definite inclusion criteria were considered for study enrollm.nt. They were further exam.ned for any kind of co-m.rbidities because of traum., operated upon for traum.tic cataracts with intraocular lens im.lantation. Am.lyopia if present was treated. All were re-exam.ned at the culm.nation of six-week postoperative *** to the Birm.ngham.Eye Traum. Term.nology System.the traum.tic cataract cases were divided into group 1(open globe) and group 2(closed globe), and then determ.nants of visual acuity were ***: There were 544 eyes in group 1 and 127 eyes in group 2 in our study of 671 eyes with pediatric traum.tic cataracts. Visual acuity at the end of 6 wk after surgery in the operated eye was > 6/60 in 450(82.7%) and ≥ 6/12 in 215(39.4%) eyes in the open globe group and > 20/200 in 127(81.8%) and ≥ 6/12 in 36(28.4%) eyes in the closed globe group(P = 0.143), and the difference between the groups was not significant in children. Overall, 402(39.4%) eyes gained ≥ 6/60 and > 5/12 in 238(35.4%) cases. Surgical treatm.nt caused a significant difference in visual outcom.(P = 0.000). When we com.ared achieved visual outcom. with ocular traum. score predicted vision, no significant difference was ***: Traum.tic cataracts in children m.y have better outcom. and ocular traum. score is a useful predictive m.thod for the ocular traum. in children.
