Anti-Osteoporosis and Anti-Osteoarthritis Activity of Fresh Water Snail <i>(Viviparous bengalensis)</i>Flesh Extract in Experimental Animal Model

Aims: Aim was to evaluate the anti-osteoporotic and anti-osteoarthritic activity of fresh water snail (Viviparous bengalensis) (VB) flesh extract (VBE) in experimental model. Settings and Design: Experimental osteoporosis (OSP) was developed in female Wistar rats by bilateral overectomy and Osteoarthritis (OA) was developed in male Wistar rats by bacterial collagenase injection. Methods and Material: VB was collected locally and authenticated, then homogenized in 3500 rpm × 15 mins and supernatant was collected. Rats were divided into-Group-1: Sham control, Group-2: OSP/OA control, Group-3: Standard (vitD3 200 mg·kg -1;p.o., calcium i.p. 1500 mg·kg -1?× 15 days in OSP and indomethacin 0.25 mg·kg-1, p.o. × 5 alternative days in OA), Group-4: VBE treated (1 gm·kg-1;p.o. × 15 days), Group-5: VBE treated (2 mg·kg-1;p.o. × 15 days). Anti-osteoporotic and anti-osteoarthritic activity of VBE was examined through physical, urinary and serum parameters. Statistical use: Data were expressed in terms of mean ± SEM (n = 6). ANOVA was performed, p Key findings: It was observed that the body weight, ankle/ knee diameters, urinary markers hydroxyproline/glucosamine/calcium/phosphate/creatinine, serum ACP/ALP/TRAP, calcium/creatinine, cytokines (TNF-α/IL-1β/CINC-1) levels were changed significantly and restored after VBE treatment. Significance: Fresh water snail flesh extract possess anti-osteoporosis and anti-osteoarthritic activity in experimental animal models.

Balanced nitrogen economy as a flexible strategy on yield stabilizing and quality of aquatic food crops in wetland ecosystem

In wetland ecosystem, nitrogen along with other elements and its management is most imperative for the production of so many aquatic food, non-food and beneficial medicinal plants and for the improvement of soil and water characteristics. With great significant importance of INM (integrated nutrient management) as sources, emphasizing on management on nitrogen as a key element and its divergence, a case study was undertaken on such aquatic food crops (starch and protein-rich, most popular and remunerative) in the farmers' field of low-lying 'Tal' situation of New Alluvial Zone of Indian subtropics. The study was designed in factorial randomized block design, where, three important aquatic food crops (water chestnut (Trapa bispinosa Roxb.), makhana (Euryale ferox Salisb.) and water lily (Nymphaea spp.) as major factor and eleven combinations of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients as sub-factor was considered in the experiment. It revealed from the results that the production of fresh kernels or nuts of water chestnut (8.571 ha-1), matured nut yield of makhana (3.06 t ha-1) and flower stalks of water-lily as vegetables (6.38 t ha-1) including its nutritional quality (starch, protein, sugar and minerals) was remarkably influenced with the application of both organic (neem oilcake @ 0.2 t ha-1) and inorganic sources (NPK @ 30:20:20 kg ha-1 along with spraying of NPK @ 0.5% each over crop canopy at 20 days interval after transplanting) than the other INM combinations applied to the crops. Among the crops, highest WCYE (water chestnut yield equivalence) exhibited in makhana due to its high price of popped-form in the country, which is being exported to other countries at now. Sole application of both (organic and inorganic sources) with lower range did not produce any significant outcome from the study and exhibited lower value for all the crops. A Comparative Study of Thyroid Hormone and Lipid Status of Patient with and without Diabetes in Adults

Introduction: Lipid and thyroid function abnormalities are common in IDDM and NIDDM. Very few studies have addressed this issue in Bangladesh though Bangladeshi population is very much susceptible to patient with diabetes. Aims: To study on lipid profile and thyroid function in IDDM and NIDDM and the effect of glycemic control on it. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out in the Dept. of Endocrinology, BIRDEM, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period of January, 2012 to May, 2012. In this study, population consisted of 120 subjects (Age between 40 - 72 years;and Sex matched) divided into two groups: patient with diabetes 60 subjects (male-30, female-30) and patient without diabetes 60 subjects (male-30, female-30). Plasma glucose, HbA1c and serum lipids were measured by enzymatic method. Thyroid hormones were measured by a Chemiluminescent Micro particle Immunoassay (CMIA).Results: The statistical significance was evaluated by Student’s t-test, Correlation-Coefficient test. All Values are given as mean ± SD. The level of serum TSH in patient with diabetes (3.43 ± 2.71) was significantly (p 0.05) increased compared to patient without diabetes subjects (1.98 ± 1.72). TSH levels were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.240, p 0.05), serum cholesterol (r = 0.290, p 0.020) and triglyceride concentration (r = 0.246, p 0.05). On the other hand, free T4 levels were inversely correlated with postprandial blood glucose (r =-0.256, p 0.046). Conclusions: It may be concluded that the lipid and thyroid function abnormalities with others socio-demographic and biophysical risk factors were more common in patient with diabetes cases rather than patient without diabetes cases. Therefore, further prospective studies with larger number of patients are required to strengthen the observations of the present study.

Defensive Role of Plant Latex on Insect Pests’ Suppression: A Critical Review

Over 350 million years have passed since the documentation of the first interaction between plants and insects. Numerous plant defense qualities and associated counter-adaptive features have developed as a result of these interactions between insects and plants. These characteristics might be either morphological or biological in nature. One of the most significant and useful biochemical characteristics in plants is latex. Latex has a sticky property due to presence of secondary metabolites in it, which aids in entangling or sealing the mouthparts of small insects. These metabolites also chemically interact with the insects interfering with crucial bodily processes. Plant latex has amazing properties that help protect plants from insects and inhibit them in general. It may be possible to control insect pests in a natural, secure, and long-lasting manner by correctly identifying plant latex with strong insecticidal properties and developing formulations of plant latex.

Visible Light Induced Knoevenagel Condensation Catalyzed by Starfruit Juice of <i>Averrhoa carambola</i>

Aqueous starfruit juice catalyzed a simple and efficient Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with malononitrile has been developed under visible light. Products were obtained in yields up to 98% after short reaction times and they were isolated by simple filtration in pure crystallization states. The method is green and economically viable. A plausible mechanism for photochemical Knoevenagel condensation reaction catalyzed by starfruit juice was also predicted.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important cereal food grain crop and is consumed by the majority of the world’s human population. Among all cultivars, fragrant/aromatic rice is preferred by the better part of the human population because of its aroma, taste and cooking quality. But most of the fragrant rice varieties are low yielding and easily sensitive to the surrounding environmental condition. Among different agronomic performances, proper nutrient management can improve the yield of fragrant rice not only by giving the required amount of nutrients but also by maintaining the health of the soil and the quality of the produce. In most cases, traditional agricultural practices degraded soil health and increased environmental pollution which leads to inferior grain quality. On the other hand, excessive application of chemical fertilizers reduced the nutrient status of the soil and badly affected the soil productivity and environmental stability. Therefore, a suitable approach of nutrient management is required to keep the production of fragrant rice to a notable amount and increase the nutrient use efficiency of soil. Application of manures and fertilizers in an appropriate dose which is the main object of nutrient management is required for its utmost importance in the growth and development of the crop that finally results in better yield and grain quality. Therefore, nutrient management is an important aspect in aromatic rice production to attain sustainable grain yield and high economic return with better quality of produce.

A Comparative Study on Correlation Measures of Pure Bipartite States through Incomparability

The entanglement of a pure bipartite state is uniquely measured by the von-Neumann entropy of its reduced density matrices. Though it cannot specify all the non-local characteristics of pure entangled states. It was proven that for every possible value of entanglement of a bipartite system, there exists an infinite number of equally entangled pure states, not comparable(satisfies Nielsen’s criteria) to each other. In this work, we investigate other correlation measures of pure bipartite states that are able to differentiate the quantum correlations of the states with entropy of entanglement. In Schmidt rank 3, we consider the whole set of states having same entanglement and compare how minutely such states can be distinguished by other correlation measures. Then for different values of entanglement we compare the sets of states belonging to the same entanglement and also investigate the graphs of different correlation measures. We extend our search to Schmidt rank 4 and 5 also.
