Effects of ZJ0273 on barley and growth recovery of herbicide-stressed seedlings through application of branched-chain amino acids

In this study, we evaluated the effect of the herbicide propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino) benzoate(ZJ0273) on barley growth and explored the potential to trigger growth recovery through the application of branched-chain amino acids(BCAAs). Barley plants were foliar-sprayed with various concentrations of ZJ0273(100, 500, or 1000 mg/L) at the four-leaf stage. Increasing either the herbicide concentration or measurement time after herbicide treatment significantly impaired plant morphological parameters such as plant height and biomass, and affected physiological indexes, i.e. maximal photochemical efficiency(Fv/Fm), quantum yield of photosystem II(ФPSII), net photosynthetic rate(Pn), and chlorophyll meter value(soil and plant analyzer development(SPAD)). Cellular injury of herbicide-treated plants was also evidenced by increased levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and antioxidative enzyme activity. Elevated levels of herbicide significantly reduced the activity of acetolactate synthase(ALS)-a keyD, enzyme in the biosynthesis of BCAAs. In a separate experiment, growth recovery in herbicide-stressed barley plants ? was studied using various concentrations of BCAAs(10, 50, 100, and 200 mg/L). Increasing BCAA concentration in growth media significantly increased the biomass of herbicide-stressed barley seedlings, but had no significant effect on non-stressed plants. Further, BCAAs(100 mg/L) significantly down-regulated ROS and consequently antioxidant enzyme levels in herbicide-stressed plants. Our results showed that exogenous application of BCAAs could reverse the inhibitory effects of ZJ0273 by restoring protein biosynthesis in barley seedlings.

Metallodeuteroporphyrins（MDPs） were employed as the catalysts for aerobic oxidation of β-pinene in absence of solvents and additives. Allylic hydroxylation products were found to be the main products from this protocol. The catalytic activity of MDPs with different metal nuclei and the influences of technological conditions on this reaction were investigated. This catalytic system has bright application prospect since only eco-friendly and readily available dioxygen were needed.

AIM： To discuss the protective effect of electroacupuncture at the Foot-Yangming Meridian on gastric mucosal lesion, somatostatin （SS） and the expression of SS receptor genes （SSR1mRNA） in rabbits with gastric ulcer and to further explore the relative specificity of meridians and viscera at gene expression level. METHODS： Forty rabbits were randomly divided into control group （A）, gastric ulcer model group （B）, FootYangming Meridian group （C）, Foot-Shaoyang Meridian group （D） and Foot-Taiyang Meridian group （E）. The gastric ulcer model was prepared by infusing alcohol into stomach. Groups C-E were treated with electroacupuncture at points along the above meridians using meridian stimulating instruments for 7 days respectively. By the end of treatment, the index of gastric ulcer was determined, the amount of epidermal growth factor（EGF） and somatostatin was measured by radioimmunoassay （PJA）. SS-R1mRNA expression in gastric mucosa was determined by RT-PCR. RESULTS： The value of EGF in model group was obviously lower（73.6±14.8 vs 91.3±14.9 pg/mL, P〈 0.01） than that in control group. The index of gastric ulcer, content of SS and expression of SSRtmRNA in gastric mucosa were significantly higher than those in control group （24.88 ± 6.29 vs 8.50 ± 2.98 scores, P〈 0.01; 2978.6 ± 587.6 vs 1852.4 ± 361.7 mIU/mL, P〈 0.01; 2.56±0.25 vs 1.04±0.36, P〈0.01） . The value of EGF in Foot-Yangming Meridian group was higher than that in model group（92.2±6.7 vs 73.6±14.8 pg/mL, P〈 0.01）. The index of gastric ulcer, content of SS and expression of SS-R1mRNA in gastric mucosa were significantlylower than those in control group（10.88±3.23 vs 24.88±6.29 scores, P〈0.01; 1800.2±488 vs 2978.6±587.6 mIU/mL, P 〈 0.01; 1.07±0.08 vs 2.56±0.25mIU/mL, P〈0.01）. Compared to the model group, the content of SS and expression of SSRlmRNA in gastric mucosa in Foot-Shaoyang Meridian group decreased （2441.0±488. vs 2978.6± 587.6 mIU/mL, P〈 0.05; 1.73±0.16 vs 2.56±0.25 mIU/mL, P〈0.01）. BACKGROUND Thallium poisoning is rare and difficult to *** diagnosis and treatment of thallium-poisoned patients are essential to prevent morbidity and *** To evaluate the efficacy of treatments and outcomes of five patients with early diagnosis of acute thallium *** Five patients who consumed a thallium-contaminated meal were hospitalized in succession,and underwent clinical examinations such as blood tests and electromyography *** and blood tests confirmed the diagnosis of thallotoxicosis,revealing the occurrence of food *** patients underwent detoxification treatment,including hemoperfusion(HP)and treatment with Prussian blue(PB).A 24-mo follow-up was performed to evaluate the long-term outcomes on the patients after *** Initially,the patients presented with symptoms of acute thallium poisoning including hyperalgesia of the limbs and abdominalgia,which may differ from common peripheral *** symptoms such as hepatic damage and alopecia were observed in all the patients,which further confirmed the diagnosis of *** with chelating agents was ineffective,while HP and treatment with PB drastically decreased the thallium concentration in the urine and *** early diagnosis and intervention,four patients had a good prognosis and no permanent *** patient developed blindness and disability during the 24-mo follow-up *** Identification of incident cluster and characteristic symptoms is extremely important for early diagnosis of acute thallium *** plus PB is essential to improve the prognosis of thallium-poisoned patients.

Diabetes is the most prevalent and serious metabolic disease, and the number of diabetic patients worldwide is increasing. The reduction of insulin biosynthes is in pancreatic E-cells is closely associated with the onset and progression of diabetes, therefore, it is important to search for ways to induce insulin-producing cells in non-E-cells. In the present study, it has been reported that activin A and a basic fibroblast growth factor 2 （ FGF2）, can synergistically increase the insulin mRNA level, in both mouse El4 striatal primary cell cultures and the hippocampal neuronal cell line HT22. Activin A and FGF2 can jointly stimulate the nuclear translocation of Smad3 and specifically activate ERK1/2. It is interesting to note that a specific inhibitor for MEK, U0126, can efficiently block the induction of an insulin promoter activity by activin A and FGF2. This indicates that activin A collaborates with FGF2, giving a signal to induce the insulin gene through selective activation of the ERK-type MAP kinase and Smad3 in mouse striatal and HT22 cells. These data suggest that activin A may act in concert with FGF2 for the development of insulin -positive neurons

Thirteen species of the lichen genus Ramalina are reported from Northeastern China. Descriptions, comments and illustrations of two species new to China, R. conduplicans and R. yasudea are provided. The earlier reports of R. fraxinea and R. polymorpha are found to be misidentified, and the correct names of them are R. sinensis and R. sekika respectively.

Quorum sensing (QS) refers to the cell communication through signaling molecules that regulate many important biological functions of bacteria by monitoring their population density. Although a wide spectrum of studies on the QS system mechanisms have been carried out in experiments, mathematical modeling to explore the QS system has become a powerful approach as well. In this paper, we review the research progress of network modeling in bacterial QS to capture the system's underlying mechanisms. There are four types of QS system models for bacteria: the Gram-negative QS system model, the Gram-positive QS system model, the model for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive QS system, and the synthetic QS system model. These QS system models are mostly described by the ordinary differential equations (ODE) or partial differential equations (PDE) to study the changes of signaling molecule dynamics in time and space and the cell population density variations. Besides the deterministic simulations, the stochastic modeling approaches have also been introduced to discuss the noise effects on kinetics in QS systems. Taken together, these current modeling efforts advance our understanding of the QS system by providing systematic and quantitative dynamics description, which can hardly be obtained in experiments.
