AIM： To investigate the changing pattern of different histological parameters occurring in the stomach tissue of Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） infected tribal populations and duodenal ulcer patients among ethnic Bengalis and correlation of the genotypes of H pylori with different histological parameters. METHODS： One hundred and twelve adult individuals were enrolled into this study between 2002 and 2004. Among them, 72 had clinical features of duodenal ulcer （DU） from ethnic Bengali population and 40 were asymptomatic ethnic tribals. Endoscopic gastric biopsy samples were processed for histology, genotyping and rapid urease test. Histologically, haematoxylin and eosin staining was applied to assess the pathomorphological changes and a modified Giemsa staining was used for better detection of Hpylori. For intestinal metaplasia, special stainings, i.e. Alcian blue periodic acid-Schiff and high iron diamine-Alcian blue staining, were performed. PCR was performed on bacterial DNA to characterize the presence or absence of virulence-associated genes, like cagA, and distribution of different alleles of vacA and iceA. RESULTS： Intraglandular neutrophil infiltration, a hallmark of activity of gastritis, was present in 34 （94%） of tribals （TRs） and 42 （84%） of DU individuals infected with H pylori. Lymphoid follicles and aggregates, which are important landmarks in H pylori infection, were positive amongst 15 （41%） of TRs and 20 （40%） of DU subjects. Atrophic changes were observed in 60% and 27.7%, respectively, among DU cases and tribals （P 〉 0.003）. Metaplastic changes were detected in low numbers in both groups. Moderate to severe density distribution of Hpylori in the gastric mucosa was 63% among TRs, whereas it was 62% in DU subjects. There were no significant differences in the distribution of virulence-associated genes like cagA, vacA and iceA of H pylori strains carried by these two populations. Hardware Realization of Artificial Neural Network Based Intrusion Detection &Prevention System

In the 21st century with the exponential growth of the Internet, the vulnerability of the network which connects us is on the rise at a very fast pace. Today organizations are spending millions of dollars to protect their sensitive data from different vulnerabilities that they face every day. In this paper, a new methodology towards implementing an Intrusion Detection & Prevention System (IDPS) based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) onto Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is proposed. This system not only detects different network attacks but also prevents them from being propagated. The parallel structure of an ANN makes it potentially fast for the computation of certain tasks. FPGA platforms are the optimum and best choice for the modern digital systems nowadays. The same feature makes ANN well suited for implementation in FPGA technology. Hardware realization of ANN to a large extent depends on the efficient implementation of a single neuron. However FPGA realization of ANNs with a large number of neurons is still a challenging task. The proposed multilayer ANN based IDPS uses multiple neurons for higher performance and greater accuracy. Simulation of the design in MATLAB SIMULINK 2010b by using Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) CUP dataset shows a very good performance. Subsequently MATLAB HDL coder was used to generate VHDL code for the proposed design that produced Intellectual Property (IP) cores for Xilinx Targeted Design Platforms. For evaluation purposes the proposed design was synthesized, implemented and tested onto Xilinx Virtex-7 2000T FPGA device.

Gravity Modeling for the Rifted Crust at the Arabian Shield Margin – Further Insight into Red Sea Spreading

A large variation in elevation and gravity anomaly prevails from the Red Sea coast to the interior of the Arabian Shield (AS) across the Asir Igneous Province (AIP);The Asir Mountain (AM) is developed on AIP. Here the elevation varies from 45 - 2700 m, corresponding changes in F.A. are from –30 to + 220 mgal and B.A. from +22 to –175 mgal. Regression relationships between elevation and gravity anomalies demonstrate significant changes in trend at about 400 m threshold of elevation across the pediment west of AM, at about 45 km inland of the shoreline, flanking the Hizaz-Asir Escarpment (HAE). Gravity anomaly variation along a traverse taken across HAE and AIP is interpreted here in terms of anomalous masses in crust as well as due to deeper crustal configuration. 2D gravity interpretation is, in part, constrained by surface geology, available geologic cross-sections for crust, interpretations from the IRIS Deep-Seismic Refraction Line, and to a lesser extent by the available gross results from shear-wave splitting and receiver function analysis. The gravity model provides probable solutions for the first time on geometric configuration and geophysical identification: a) for the seaward margin of the mid-Tertiary Mafic Crust (TMC) below sediment cover of the Asir pediment that coincides with the 400 m threshold elevation. This signifies an anomalous uplift at the rifting phase. Moho below TMC extends from 10 - 22 km depth across HAE and west margin of AIP, b). Thinned continental crust below the Asir margin whose upper layer coincides with a seismic reflector is at about 22 km depth, c). Rift-margin characteristic detachment fault associated with basaltic flows on top surface of TMC at its inner margin, d). Two geologically mapped low-angle normal faults dipping to the east developed between the basic rocks intruding the AIP and e). felsic pluton farther east within AS. Use of Ventilation-Index in the Development of Exposure Model for Indoor Air Pollution—A Review

In indoor environment, emission factor of the cooking fuel plays a vital role in determining correlation between exposure assessment and health effects. Both indoor and outdoor air pollution exposures are widely influenced by the ventilation status. An optimum control of the air change rate has also significant impact on the exposure pattern. A number of studies revealed that the indoor particulates and gaseous exposures, resulting from the combustion of various cooking fuels, are associated with significant adverse health effects on pregnant mothers and new born babies. The impacts of ventilation status on air pollution exposure in households’ kitchens or living rooms have not been explored enough. Except a few studies with concrete rooms, especially in industries, no other studies have been established on the correlation between the ventilation index and air pollution exposure. The intent of this review is to discuss reported findings focused on the ventilation and exposure to air pollution. This will obviously help better understanding to modulate exposure profile in household condition using simple tool of ventilation measurement.

Clay Mineral and Geochemical Proxies for Intense Climate Change in the Permian Gondwana Rock Record from Eastern India

The clay mineral assemblages and geochemical compositions of the Permian Talchir and Barakar mudstones of the Raniganj basin,India,have been used to interpret terrestrial *** Talchir Formation presents unequivocal evidences of the Permian global glacial climate,and the overlying Barakar Formation with braided fluvial deposits immediately follows the glacial amelioration stage to a humid warm *** unaffected by burial diagenesis and originated from a similar source under contrasting climates are ideal for developing proxies for substantial climate ***(28.4-63.8%),illite/smectite(0-58.6%,40-80%illite),chlorite(0-53.9%),and chlorite/smectite(5.6-29.8%)constitute the clay mineral assemblage in the Talchir Formation whereas illite(5.3-78.2%),illite/smectite(trace-34.1%,mostly 60-90%illite),and kaolinite(36.1-86.8%)dominate the clay mineral assemblage in the Barakar *** Talchir mudrocks are enriched in mobile elements and depleted in alumina ***,have relatively higher K_(2)O/Al_(2)O_(3) ratios(~0.3),high ICV(1.12-1.28),and lower CIA values(52.6-65.1)compared to those of the younger Barakar *** Barakar mudstones are depleted in mobile elements ***,have relatively low ICV(0.33-0.62)and K_(2)O/Al_(2)O_(3) values(0.11-0.16),and higher CIA values(72.9-88.2).Textural,mineralogical immaturity,and rock fragments of different components of the basement seen in the Talchir sandstones show these sediments being a first-cycle sedimentary *** distinctive clay mineral assemblage and major oxide composition of the Talchir mudrocks attest to a unique low intensity chemical weathering in cold arid *** presence of kaolinite as well as distinctive geochemical characters of the Barakar mudrocks marks a shift in the paleoclimate from cold arid to *** climatic shift is further supported by the proportion and composition of illite/smectite across the *** relative proportion of chlorite

A New Strain of Entomopathogenic Bacillus of the Tea Pest, Eterusia magnifica （Butl.）（Zyganiidae： Lepidoptera） from Darjeeling Foothill Region of India

An entomopathogenic strain of Bacillus sp. was isolated from diseased red slug caterpillars of the leaf-feediug pest of tea, Eterusia magnifica, from the Darjeeling foothill region. Analysis of the bacterimn based on polyphasic approach such as growth phase, biochemical tests, whole body＂ protein, crystal protein profiles along with bioassay （i.e. LC50 and LT50 values） established it as a different strain but close to Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki （Btk）, the commercial microbial pesticides of lepidopterans. Among biochemical parameters differences were noted between the new strain and Btk in ONPG, lysine decarboxylase, omithin decarboxylase, urease, nitrate reduction, V-P and glucose utilization tests. PAGE analysis of the whole body protein for the new strain recorded a 34 kDa band which was absent in Btk （used as reference）. Crystal protein profile of the newly isolated bacterial strain showed 53 and 49 kDa bands whereas in Btk only 52 kDa band was evident. Although the LC50 values of the new strain and Btk were close, their LT50 values were much different, the new strain showing a lower value than Btk. In light of the above differences and in absence of any report of entomopathogenic bacterial strain of E. magnifica, the isolated strain of Bacillus appeared to be new to science and hence was designated as RS01. The new strain opens up the possibility of its futttre use as microbial pesticide after standardizing its formulation and checking its safety aspects.

The Unexplored Role of Probiotics on the Parasitic Pathogens

The beneficial bacteria coined as probiotics are used as therapeutics to the host and evidences are there to demonstrate to treat bacterial and viral respiratory infections, gastrointestinal diseases, eczema, inflammation, H. pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome and allergic symptoms etc. In recent past, probiotics has been reported for the control of intestinal parasite infections as well as few non-gut infections spread among human and veterinary animals. Animal models and in vitro culture systems have been studied regarding cellular interactions between probiotics and pathogens or relevant host cells, though the underlying molecular mechanisms mediating the beneficial effects have not yet fully discovered. Hence, more evidence based studies are warranted to correlate whether probiotics through multiple mechanisms might indeed provide a strain-specific protection against parasites to use it as therapeutics. This article has described the effect of probiotics in some of the intestinal as well as non-gut parasites and suggested the scope of exploring the benefit for protozoan parasite Leishmania, as India is planning for the elimination of the disease.
