Decreased levels of plasma adiponectin associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer

AIM:To investigate the association between adiponectin levels and risk of colorectal adenoma and cancer (early and advanced).METHODS: A cross-sectional study in a cohort of hospital-based patients was conducted between January 2004 and March 2006 at Yamagata University Hospital. Male subjects, who had colorectal tumors detected by endoscopic examination, were enrolled according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the T factor of the TNM system, intraepithelial carcinoma and submucosally invasive carcinoma were def ined as early cancer, and invasion into the muscularis propria or deeper was defined as advanced cancer. The plasma levels of glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, insulin like growth factor (IGF)-1, IGF binding protein-3, adiponectin, leptin, and resistin were measured. Each factor level was designated low or high, and the risk of adenoma or cancer was estimated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression ***: We enrolled 124 male subjects (47 with adenoma, 34 with early cancer, 17 with advanced cancer, and 26 without tumors as controls). In patients with adenoma, high triglyceride and low adiponectin were associated with a significant increase in the odds ratio (OR) by univariate analysis. Only a low adiponectin level was related to increased adenoma risk, with an adjusted OR for low level (<11 μg/mL) to high (≥11 μg/mL) of 5.762 (95% confidence interval (CI):1.683-19.739, P=0.005). In the patients with early cancer, high body mass index, high triglyceride, and low adiponectin were associated with a significant increase in OR in univariate analysis. Imultivariate analysis, only low adiponectin was significantly associated with early cancer, with an adjusted OR of 4.495 (95% CI:1.090-18.528, P=0.038). Effect of an extract of Ganoderma lucidum in men with lower urinary tract symptoms： a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized and dose-ranging study

Aim： To conduct a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized and dose-ranging study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the extract of Ganoderma lucidum （G. lucidum） in men with lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTS）. Methods： We enrolled male volunteers （〉 50 years） with an International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS; questions 1-7）〉 5 and a prostate-specific antigen （PSA） value 〈 4 ng/mL. Volunteers were randomized into groups of placebo （n = 12）, G. lucidum of 0.6 mg （n = 12）, 6 mg （n = 12） or 60 mg （n = 14）, administered once daily. Efficacy was measured as a change from baseline in IPSS and the peak urine flow rate （Qmax）. Prostate volume and residual urine were estimated by ultrasonography, and blood tests, including PSA levels, were measured at baseline and at the end of the treatment. Results： The overall administration was well tolerated, with no major adverse effects. Statistical significances in the magnitude of changes between the experimental groups were observed at weeks 4 and 8. No changes were observed with respect to Qmax, residual urine, prostate volume or PSA levels. Conclusion： The extract of G. lucidum was well tolerated and an improvement in IPSS was observed. The recommended dose of the extract of G. lucidum is 6 mg in men with LUTS.

Aim： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of an extract of Ganoderma lucidum that shows the strongest 5α-reductase inhibitory activity among the extracts of 19 edible and medicinal mushrooms by a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized and dose-ranging study in men with lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTS）. Methods： In this trial, we randomly assigned 88 men over the age of 49 years who had slight-to-moderate LUTS to 12 weeks of treatment with G. lucidum extract （6 mg once a day） or placebo. The primary outcome measures were changes in the International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS） and variables of uroflowmetry. Secondary outcome measures included changes in prostate size, residual urinary volume after voiding, laboratory values and the reported adverse effects. Results： G. lucidum was effective and significantly superior to placebo for improving total IPSS with 2.1 points decreasing at the end of treatment （mean difference, -1.18 points; 95% confidence interval, -1.74 to -0.62; P 〈 0.0001）. No changes were observed with respect to quality of life scores, peak urinary flow, mean urinary flow, residual urine, prostate volume, serum prostate-specific antigen or testosterone levels. Overall treatment was well tolerated with no severe adverse effects. Conclusion： The extract of G. lucidum was well tolerated and improved IPSS scores. These results encouraged a further, large-scale evaluation of phytotherapy for a long duration using the extract of G. lucidum on men with LUTS.

Learning Based Falling Detection Using Multiple Doppler Sensors

Automated falling detection is one of the important tasks in this ageing society. Such systems are supposed to have little interference on daily life. Doppler sensors have come to the front as useful?devices to detect human activity without using any wearable sensors. The conventional Doppler sensor based falling detection mechanism uses the features of only one sensor. This paper presents falling detection using multiple Doppler sensors. The resulting data from sensors are combined or selected to find out the falling event. The combination method, using three sensors, shows 95.5% accuracy of falling detection. Moreover, this method compensates the drawbacks of mono Doppler sensor which encounters problems when detecting movement orthogonal to irradiation directions.

Preparation of Zn2+-Chelated Carboxymethyl Poly(1-Vinylimidazole) for Intracellular Zn2+Delivery

Zinc ions (Zn2+), known to be a novel intracellular second messenger related to various biological functions, have been delivered inside cells. For the intracellular Zn2+ delivery, Zn2+ has been chelated to carboxymethyl poly(1-vinylimidazole) (CM-PVIm) by mixing zinc chloride (ZnCl2) or zinc acetate (Zn(OAc)2) with CM-PVIm. The resulting Zn2+-chelated CM-PVIm, that is, Zn2+/CM-PVIm complex by mixing ZnCl2 exhibited smaller particle size below 10 nm and possessed larger amount of Zn2+ ions, as compared to the Zn2+/CM-PVIm by mixing Zn(OAc)2. The both Zn2+/CM-PVIm complexes exhibited no significant cytotoxicity, leading to intracellular Zn2+ delivery. The Zn2+/CM-PVIm by mixing ZnCl2 delivered larger amount of intracellular Zn2+ ions than that by mixing Zn(OAc)2. These results suggest that the optimal Zn2+/CM-PVIm complex is a useful tool for intracellular Zn2+ delivery to control various biological functions.

Correlation between 99mTcO4-Thyroid Scintigraphy and Blood Test in Primary Hyperthyroidism

Background: The 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy is commonly used for hyperthyroidism diagnosis. Uptake value of 99mTcO4- on thyroid scintigraphy is an indicator of hyperthyroidism activity. Although, the correlation between free T3 value and free T4 value is not necessary clear in primary hyperthyroidism. Introduction: This study investigated the correlation between results of blood test and uptake of 99mTcO4- on thyroid scintigraphy in primary hyperthyroidism. Methodlogy: In this retrspective study, uptake was calculated in patients diagnosed with primary hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease/Basedow’s disease) based on clinical findings, blood tests, thyroid ultrasound, and 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy (uptake ≥3%) at St. Marianna University School of Medicine Hospital between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019. This uptake of 99mTcO4- was compared with results of blood tests. Results: Fifty-four consecutively arriving patients at the hospital (12 men, 42 women;mean age 43.0 ± 14.0 years) were selected. Free T3 (n = 54) was 14.6 ± 6.8 pg/mL, free T4 (n = 53) was 5.0 ± 2.3 ng/mL, and uptake on thyroid scintigraphy was 10.0% ± 7.1%. The correlation coefficients were 0.60 (p 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy uptake. Conclusion: In primary hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease), there is a correlation between free T4 value and 99mTcO

Dysbiosis in the intestinal microflora can affect the gut production of microbial metabolites,and toxic substances can disrupt the barrier function of the intestinal wall,leading to the development of various *** levels of Clostridium subcluster XIVa(XIVa)are associated with the intestinal dysbiosis found in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)and Clostridium difficile infection(CDI).Since XIVa is a bacterial group responsible for the conversion of primary bile acids(BAs)to secondary BAs,the proportion of intestinal XIVa can be predicted by determining the ratio of deoxycholic acid(DCA)/[DCA+cholic acid(CA)]in feces *** example,serum DCA/(DCA+CA)was significantly lower in IBD patients than in healthy controls,even in the remission *** results suggest that a low proportion of intestinal XIVa in IBD patients might be a precondition for IBD onset but not a consequence of intestinal *** report showed that a reduced serum DCA/(DCA+CA)ratio could predict susceptibility to ***,the BA profile,particularly the ratio of secondary to primary BAs,can serve as a surrogate marker of the intestinal dysbiosis caused by decreased XIVa.

The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred at 14:46 on March 11,2011,caused all off-site power to be lost at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station（NPS）,but the emergency diesel generators（EDGs） started up,and the electric power necessary for reactor safety was *** 15:27 the first tsunami was observed,which far exceeded the design basis of the power plant and caused the loss of almost all safety functions of core cooling and *** a result,the reactor core was damaged in Units 1 to 3,and hydrogen explosions destroyed the reactor buildings（R/Bs） of Units 1,3 and ***,since the spent fuel pool（SFP） cooling was also lost,external water was injected into the *** Units 1 and 3,since depressurization of primary containment vessel（PCV） through the vent from suppression chamber（S/C） was completed,release of radioactive materials was *** the other hand the PCV vent was not successful in Unit *** data rose sharply before noon on March 15 when Unit 2 PCV pressure dropped considerably and steam was seen coming from Unit 2 R/*** blowing toward the north-northwest direction prevailed that day and rain fell in that direction at night,so it is likely that the contamination in high contamination zones around the plant resulted from a release of radioactive materials from Unit 2 R/B on March *** the field surveys and the design of the PCV,it is expected that the leak might have occurred at the seal of the PCV top head *** addition,as a result of evaluating the release of radioactive materials,the vent operations and the explosions at the R/Bs were not considered a major cause of contamination.

采用pH调节法对凡纳滨对虾(Litopenaeus vannamei)虾壳中影响虾壳红变的β虾青蛋白进行分离回收,以蛋白质回收率、纯度和二级结构含量为分离特性参数,以1.0为pH变化梯度,研究pH调节法从虾壳中提取β虾青蛋白的规律。结果显示,pH调节法的回收率为47.5%,所得蛋白质纯度为78.23%、分子量为45 000 Da。该蛋白质在pH3.0和11.0时有最大溶解度,分别为60.5%和55.7%;在pH5.0时溶解度最低为15.4%;等电点为5.6。通过圆二色光谱图分析得知β虾青蛋白是一种以α螺旋为主要二级结构存在的物质,pH调节法所得α螺旋含量为70.1%。

The optimal dose of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator(rtPA)for acute ischaemic stroke(AIS)remains controversial,especially in Asian *** aimed to update the evidence regarding the use of low-dose versus standard-dose *** performed a systematic literature search across MEDLINE,Embase,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials(CENTRAL),PsycINFO and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature(CINAHL)from inception to 22 August 2016 to identify all related *** outcomes were death or disability(defined by modified Rankin Scale 2-6),death,and symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage(sICH).Where possible,data were pooled for meta-analysis with ORs and corresponding 95% CIs by means of random-effects or fixed-effects *** included 26 observational studies and 1 randomised controlled trial with a total of 23210 *** doses of rtPA were used for thrombolysis of AIS in ***-analysis shows that low-dose rtPA was not associated with increased risk of death or disability(OR 1.13,95% CI 0.95 to 1.33),or death(OR 0.86,95% CI 0.74 to 1.01),or decreased risk of sICH(OR 1.06,95% CI 0.65 to 1.72).The results remained consistent when sensitivity analyses were performed including only low-dose and standard-dose rtPA or only Asian *** review shows small difference between the outcomes or the risk profile in the studies using low-dose and/or standard-dose rtPA for ***-dose rtPA was not associated with lower risk of death or disability,death alone,or sICH.
