Histological and biochemical alterations in early-stage lobar ischemia-reperfusion in rat liver

AIM： To investigate the structural and biochemical changes in the early stage of reperfusion in the rat livers exposed to lobar ischemia-reperfusion （IR）. METHODS： The median and left lobes of the liver were subjected to 60 min ischemia followed by 5, 10, 30, 45, 60 and 120 min reperfusion. Blood samples were taken at different time intervals to test enzyme activities and biochemical alterations induced by reperfusion. At the end of each reperfusion period, the animals were killed by euthanasia and tissue samples were taken for histological examination and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS： Cell vacuolation, bleb formation and focal hepatitis were the most important changes occur during ischemia. While some changes including bleb formation were removed during reperfusion, other alterations including portal hepatitis, inflammation and the induction of apoptosis were seen during this stage. The occurrence of apoptosis, as demonstrated by apoptotic cells and bodies, was the most important histological change during reperfusion. The severity of apoptosis was dependent on the time of reperfusion, and by increasing the time of reperfusion, the numbers of apoptotic bodies was significantly enhanced. The amounts of lactate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransfrase, creatinine and urea were significantly increased in serum obtained from animals exposed to hepatic IR. CONCLUSION： Inflammation and subsequent apoptotic cell death were the most important changes in early-stage hepatic reperfusion injury, and the number of apoptotic bodies increased with time of reperfusion.

Application of a new SPA-SVM coupling method for QSPR study of electrophoretic mobilities of some organic and inorganic compounds

In this work, two chemometrics methods are applied for the modeling and prediction of electrophoretic mobilities of some organic and inorganic compounds. The successive projection algorithm, feature selection （SPA） strategy, is used as the descriptor selection and model development method. Then, the support vector machine （SVM） and multiple linear regression （MLR） model are utilized to construct the non-linear and linear quantitative structure-property relationship models. The results obtained using the SVM model are compared with those obtained using MLR reveal that the SVM model is of much better predictive value than the MLR one. The root-mean-square errors for the training set and the test set for the SVM model were 0.1911 and 0.2569, respectively, while by the MLR model, they were 0.4908 and 0.6494, respectively. The results show that the SVM model drastically enhances the ability of prediction in QSPR studies and is superior to the MLR model.

Achieving full grating-lobe-free field of view with low-complexity co-prime photonic beamforming transceivers

Integrated photonic active beamforming can significantly reduce the size and cost of coherent imagers for LiDAR and medical imaging *** current architectures,the complexity of photonic and electronic circuitry linearly increases with the desired imaging *** propose a novel photonic transceiver architecture based on co-prime sampling techniques that breaks this trade-off and achieves the full(radiating-element-limited)field of view(FOV)for a 2D aperture with a single-frequency *** only order-of-N radiating elements,this architecture achieves beamwidth and sidelobe level(SLL)performance equivalent to a transceiver with order-of-N^(2) elements with half-wavelength ***,we incorporate a pulse amplitude modulation(PAM)row-column drive methodology to reduce the number of required electrical drivers for this architecture from order of N to order of √N.A silicon photonics implementation of this architecture using two 64-element apertures,one for transmitting and one for receiving,requires only 34 PAM electrical drivers and achieves a transceiver SLL of-11.3 dB with 1026 total resolvable spots,and 0.6°beamwidth within a 23°×16.3°FOV.

Discretization of annular-ring diffraction pattern for large-scale photonics beamforming

A solid-state active beamformer based on the annular-ring diffraction pattern is demonstrated in an integrated photonic *** a circularly symmetric annular-ring aperture achieves a radiating element limited field of ***,it is demonstrated that a multi-annular-ring aperture with a fixed linear density of elements maintains the beam efficiency for larger apertures while reducing the beamwidth and side-lobe level.A 255-element multi-annular-ring optical phased array with active beamforming is implemented in a standard photonics process.A total of 510 phase and amplitude modulators enable beamforming and beam steering using this aperture.A row-column drive methodology reduces the required electrical drivers by more than a factor of 5.

Comparing End-Use Potential for Industrial Food-Waste Sources

Approximately one quarter of the global edible food supply is wasted. The drivers of food waste can occur at any level between production, harvest, distribution, processing, and the consumer. While the drivers vary globally, the industrialized regions of North America, Europe, and Asia share similar situations; in each of these regions the largest loss of food waste occurs with the consumer, at approximately 51% of total waste generated. As a consequence, handling waste falls on municipal solid waste operations. In the United States, food waste constitutes 15% of the solid waste stream by weight, contributes 3.4 -107 t of carbon dioxide （CO2） equivalent emissions, and costs 1.9 billion USD in disposal fees. The levels of carbon, nutrients, and moisture in food waste make bioprocessing into higher value products an attractive method for mitigation. Opportunities include extraction of nutraceuticals and bioactive compounds, or conversion to a variety of volatile acids-including lactic, acetic, and propionic acids-that can be recovered and sold at a profit. The conversion of waste into volatile acids can be paired with bioen- ergy production, including hydrogen or biogas. This present review compares the potential for upgrading industrial food waste to either specialty products or methane. Higher value uses of industrial food waste could alleviate approximately 1.9-108 t of CO2 equivalent emissions. As an example, potato peel could be upgraded to lactic acid via fermentation to recover 5600 million USD per year, or could be converted to methane via anaerobic digestion, resulting in a revenue of 900 million USD per year. The potential value to be recovered is significant, and food-waste valorization will help to close the loop for various food industries.

Effects of solution treatment on high temperature deformation behavior of extruded Mg-0.35Y-2.17Nd-0.36Zr biomedical alloy

The high temperature deformation behavior of an extruded Mg-0.35 Y-2.17 Nd-0.36 Zr(wt.%) alloy was investigated for biomedical application by employing compression tests in temperature range of 225-525 ℃ and strain rate range of 0.0003-0.03 s-1. To study the significance of solute elements, the material was solution-treated before deformation. The low temperature yield strength of the as-extruded material significantly decreased after solutionizing process. A drastic change in the strength of solutionized alloy was recorded as the temperature was raised to 450 ℃, which was attributed to the promotion of grain boundary sliding(GBS). It was evidently shown that the slip-to-twinning transition temperature did not necessarily coincide with the strength-drop temperature. Based on constitutive equations, deformation parameters and related activation energy for the experimental alloy have been determined, incorporating the strain-dependent material constants. The verification of predictability of the developed models indicates a good agreement between experimental and predicted data.

Introduce a Novel PCA Method for Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets Based on Cross Entropy

In this paper, a new method for Principal Component Analysis in intuitionistic fuzzy situations has been proposed. This approach is based on cross entropy as an information index. This new method is a useful method for data reduction for situations in which data are not exact. The inexactness in the situations assumed here is due to fuzziness and missing data information, so that we have two functions (membership and non-membership). Thus, method proposed here is suitable for Atanasov’s Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (A-IFSs) in which we have an uncertainty due to a mixture of fuzziness and missing data information. For the demonstration of the application of the method, we have used an example and have presented a conclusion.

The considered in this paper has been solved already numerically in [1].

Clinical features of hepatopulmonary syndrome in cirrhotic patients

AIM： To evaluate the frequency, clinical and paraclinical features of hepatopulmonary syndrome （HPS） and to determine their predictive values in diagnosis of this syndrome in patients in Iran. METHODS： Fifty four cirrhotic patients underwent contrast enhanced echocardiography to detect intrapulmonary and intracardiac shunts by two cardiologists. Arterial blood oxygen, 02 gradient （A-a） and orthodoxy were measured by arterial blood gas （ABG） test. The patients positive for diagnostic criteria of HPS were defined as clinical HPS cases and those manifesting the intrapulmonary arterial dilation but no other criteria （arterial blood hypoxemia） were defined as IHPS cases. HPS frequency, sensitivity, positive and negative predictive values of clinical and paraclinical features were studied. RESULTS： Ten （18.5%） and seven （13%） cases had clinical and subclinical HPS, respectively. The most common etiology was hepatitis B. Dyspnea （100%） and cyanosis （90%） were the most prevalent clinical features. Dyspnea and clubbing were the/host sensitive and specific clinical features respectively. No significant relationship was found between HPS and splenomegaly, ascites, edema, jaundice, oliguria, and collateral veins. HPS was more prevalent in hepatitis B. PaO2〈 70 and arterial-alveolar gradient had the highest sensitivity in HPS patients. Orthodoxy specificity was 100%. CONCLUSION： Clubbing with positive predictive value （PPV） of 75% and dyspnea with negative predictive value （NPV） of 75% are the best clinical factors in diagnosis of HPS syndrome. PaO2〈70 and P （A-a） 02〉 30 and their sum, are the most valuable negative and positive predictive values in HPS patients.
