Energy Management of Price-maker Community Energy storage by stochastic Dynamic Programming

In this paper,we propose an analytical stochastic dynamic programming(sDP)algorithm to address the optimal management problem of price-maker community energy storage.As a price-maker,energy storage smooths price differences,thus decreasing energy arbitrage value.However,this price-smoothing effect can result in significant external welfare changes by reduc-ing consumer costs and producer revenues,which is not negligible for the community with energy storage systems.As such,we formulate community storage management as an sDP that aims to maximize both energy arbitrage and community welfare.To incorporate market interaction into the sDP format,we propose a framework that derives partial but sufficient market information to approximate impact of storage operations on market prices.Then we present an analytical sDP algorithm that does not require state discretization.Apart from computational efficiency,another advantage of the analytical algorithm is to guide energy storage to charge/discharge by directly comparing its current marginal value with expected future marginal value.Case studies indicate community-owned energy storage that maximizes both arbitrage and welfare value gains more benefits than storage that maximizes only arbitrage.The proposed algorithm ensures optimality and largely reduces the computational complexity of the standard sDP.Index Terms-Analytical stochastic dynamic programming,energy management,energy storage,price-maker,social welfare.

Motion of charged particles in bright squeezed vacuum

The motion of laser-driven electrons quivers with an average energy termed pondermotive energy.We explore electron dynamics driven by bright squeezed vacuum(BsV),finding that BsV induces width oscillations,akin to electron quivering in laser light,with an equivalent ponderomotive energy.We identify closed and open trajectories of the electronic width that are associated with high harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization,respectively,similarly to trajectories of the electron position when its motion is driven by coherent light.In the case of bound electrons,the width oscillations may lead to ionization with noisy sub-cycle structure.Our results are foundational for strong-field and free-electron quantum optics,as they shed light on ionization,high harmonic generation,and nonlinear Compton scattering in BsV.

Using injectable fillers for chin and jawline rejuvenation

Objective:As the population ages,facial plastic providers must remain aware of the treatments to prevent and reverse the external signs of aging.In the mandibular region,skin laxity and soft tissue sagging in the jawline may lead to jowling and chin ptosis along with reduced chin projection.While surgical procedures,including chin implantation,may be performed,nonsurgical procedures are becoming increasingly popular due to their temporary,noninvasive,yet effective methods.This review covers the use of hyaluronic acid,calcium hydroxylapatite,poly-L-lactic acid,and polymethyl methacrylate in the jawline.Methods:PubMed was searched for data on the mechanism of action,pertinent anatomy,indications,contraindications,technique,and evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of the fillers.Results:There are a wide variety of fillers available for use in the lower face with unique characteristics and application methods.While the advantages of injectable fillers include relatively affordable cost,minimal patient discomfort,and limited recovery times,taking measures to prevent short-and long-term complications is necessary for optimal results.Conclusions:Understanding the benefits and limitations of injectable fillers in the jawline can help providers appropriately counsel and treat patients.

Nowadays,p53 is like a Dreamliner airplane,riding the high skies of cancer research with dignity and pride.You do not have to be a card-bearing p53 researcher to know about p53,care about it,and respect it.Yet,this was not always so.As a matter of fact,in the first years of p53 research,from its discovery in the late 1970's to about the end of the 1980's,p53 was more like a kite:one moment high up in the air,the next moment being dragged on the ground.

Crohn’s and colitis in children and adolescents

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can be grouped as the inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD).These conditions have become increasingly common in recent years,including in children and young people.Although much is known about aspects of the pathogenesis of these diseases,the precise aetiology is not yet understood,and there remains no cure.Recent data has illustrated the importance of a number of genes-several of these are important in the onset of IBD in early life,including in infancy.Pain,diarrhoea and weight loss are typical symptoms of paediatric Crohn's disease whereas bloody diarrhoea is more typical of colitis in children.However,atypical symptoms may occur in both conditions:these include isolated impairment of linear growth or presentation with extra-intestinal manifestations such as erythema nodosum.Growth and nutrition are commonly compromised at diagnosis in both Crohn's disease and colitis.Consideration of possible IBD and completion of appropriate investi-gations are essential to ensure prompt diagnosis,thereby avoiding the consequences of diagnostic delay.Patterns of disease including location and progression of IBD in childhood differ substantially from adultonset disease.Various treatment options are available for children and adolescents with IBD.Exclusive enteral nutrition plays a central role in the induction of remission of active Crohn's disease.Medical and surgical therapies need to considered within the context of a growing and developing child.The overall management of these chronic conditions in children should include multi-disciplinary expertise,with focus upon maintaining control of gut inflammation,optimising nutrition,growth and quality of life,whilst preventing disease or treatment-related complications.

Limnological instrumentation in the middle of the 19^(th) century:the first temperature and density profiles measured in the Dead sea

The first modern survey of the Dead sea was performed by the Geological survey of Israel in 1959–1960,and the report published remains the baseline study for our understanding of the physical and chemical properties of the lake.At the time the Dead sea was a meromictic lake with a strong salinity gradient separating the deep waters(>40 m depth) from the less saline surface waters.A few results of analyses of deeper water samples collected in the 1930 s were reported,but overall we have very little information about the structure of the lake's water column before the 1959–1960 survey.However,it is little known that data on the physical and the chemical structure of the Dead sea water column were obtained already in the middle of the 19 th century,and the information collected then is highly relevant for the reconstruction of the limnological properties of the lake in earlier times.The expedition of Lieutenant William Lynch(U.s.Navy) in 1848 reported the presence of a temperature minimum at a depth of ~18 m,and also retrieved a water sample collected close to the bottom for chemical analysis.In 1864,the French Dead sea exploration by the Duc de Luynes and his crew yielded detailed density and salinity profiles for a number of sampling stations.The results of these pioneering studies are discussed here,as well as the sampling equipment and measuring instruments used by the 1848 and the 1864 expeditions.

What do we know about biological nitrogen fixation in insects? Evidence and implications for the insect and the ecosystem

Many insects feed on a low‐nitrogen diet,and the origin of their nitrogen supply is poorly understood.It has been hypothesized that some insects rely on nitrogen‐fixing bacteria(diazotrophs)to supplement their diets.Nitrogen fixation by diazotrophs has been extensively studied and convincingly demonstrated in termites,while evidence for the occurrence and role of nitrogen fixation in the diet of other insects is less conclusive.Here,we summarize the methods to detect nitrogen fixation in insects and review the available evidence for its occurrence(focusing on insects other than termites).We distinguish between three aspects of nitrogen fixation investigations:(i)detecting the presence of potential diazotrophs;(ii)detecting the activity of the nitrogen‐fixing enzyme;and(iii)detecting the assimilation of fixed nitrogen into the insect tissues.We show that although evidence from investigations of the first aspect reveals ample opportunities for interactions with potential diazotrophs in a variety of insects,demonstrations of actual biological nitrogen fixation and the assimilation of fixed nitrogen are restricted to very few insect groups,including wood‐feeding beetles,fruit flies,leafcutter ants,and a wood wasp.We then discuss potential implications for the insect's fitness and for the ecosystem as a whole.We suggest that combining these multiple approaches is crucial for the study of nitrogen fixation in insects,and argue that further demonstrations are desperately needed in order to determine the relative importance of diazotrophs for insect diet and fitness,as well as to evaluate their overall impact on the ecosystem.

In plants, the phloem is the component of the vascular system that delivers nutrients and transmits signals from mature leaves to developing sink tissues. Recent studies have identified proteins, mRNA, and small RNA within the phloem sap of several plant species. It is now of considerable interest to elucidate the biological functions of these potential long-distance signal agents, to further our understanding of how plants coordinate their developmental programs at the whole-plant level. In this study, we developed a strategy for the functional analysis of phloem-mobile mRNA by focusing on IAA transcripts, whose mobility has previously been reported in melon （Cucumis melo cv. Hale＇s Best Jumbo）. Indoleacetic acid （IAA） proteins are key transcriptional regulators of auxin signaling, and are involved in a broad range of developmental processes including root development. We used a combination of vasculature-enriched sampling and hetero-grafting techniques to identify IAA18 and IAA28 as phloemmobile transcripts in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Micro-grafting experiments were used to confirm that these IAA transcripts, which are generated in vascular tissues of mature leaves, are then transported into the root system where they negatively regulate lateral root formation. Based on these findings, we present a model in which auxin distribution, in combination with phloem-mobile Aux/IAA transcripts, can determine the sites of auxin action.

Hepatocellular carcinoma in the post-hepatitis C virus era: should we change the paradigm?

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common and deadly malignancy. The disease usually develops on a background of chronic liver disease. Until recently, the most common etiology was infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The advent of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies has been a major breakthrough in HCV treatment. sustained virologic response can now be achieved in almost all treated patients, even in patients with a high risk for the development of HCC, such as the elderly or those with significant fibrosis. Early reports raised concerns of a high risk for HCC occurrence after DAA therapy both in patients with previous resection of tumors and those without previous tumors. As the World Health Organization’s goals for eradication of HCV are being endorsed worldwide, the elimination of HCV seems feasible. simultaneous to the decrease in the burden of cirrhosis from HCV, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence has been increasing dramatically including significant increased incidence of cirrhosis and HCC in these patients. surprisingly, a substantial proportion of patients with NAFLD were shown to develop HCC even in the absence of cirrhosis. Furthermore, HCC treatment and potential complications are known to be influenced by liver steatosis. These changes in etiology and epidemiology of HCC suggest the beginning of a new era: The post–HCV era. Changes may eventually undermine current practices of early detection, surveillance and management of HCC. We focused on the risk of HCC occurrence and recurrence in the post–HCV era, the surveillance needed after DAA therapy and current studies in HCC patients with NAFLD.
