Since Hermann Staudinger coined the revolutionary concept of macromolecules in 1920, synthetic polymers have served as a major game changer to our society and become indispensable in our daily lives. Unlike biomacromolecules (e.g., DNA and proteins) possessing precise molar masses/chain sequences/topologies and specific biological functions, synthetic polymers are abiotic materials characterized by broad chain length distributions and undefined sequences. To bridge the gap between natural and synthetic polymers, the biomimetic synthesis of polymers with precise chain length, sequences and topologies has been long pursued and yet unmet in polymer science.

Spider silk has attracted increasing attention due to its fascinating combination of ultra-high tenacity high strength,and excellent elasticity.Based on the fundamental biological studies on spider silk,significant research efforts have been devoted to biotechnology and chemical synthesis to mimic or even exceed the properties of natural spider silk fibers.Moreover,the natural spider silk fiber has been simulated with the burgeoning development of numerous spinning technologies,including wet spinning,dry spinning,electrostatic spinning,and microfluidic spinning,which continuously help to optimize the properties of synthetic spider silk.The unique characteristics of natural spider silk include high refraction transmission,heat resistance,antimicrobial properties,biocompatibility,and super shrinking.Biconical recreation of spider silk with special features and extraordinary capabilities demonstrates potential applications in biomedicine,smart wearables,artificial muscles and sensors,aerospace and other domains.

The application of multifunctional materials in various fields such as electronics and signal processors has attracted massive attention. Herein, a new organic-inorganic hybrid material [Et_(3)NCH_(2)Cl]_(2)[MnBr_(4)](1) is reported, which contains two organic amines cations and one [MnBr_(4)] tetrahedral ion. Compound 1 has a dielectric anomaly signal at 338 K, which proves its thermodynamic phase transition. The single crystal measurements at 200 K and 380 K show that the phase transition of compound 1 is caused by the thermal vibration of organic amine cations in the lattice. Moreover, compound 1 shows yellow-green luminescence under UV light irradiation. The magnetism measurements indicate that compound 1 shows switchable magnetic properties. This organic–inorganic material is a multifunctional material with dielectric, optical, and magnetic synergetic switchable effects, which expands a new direction for designing multifunctional materials.

Rice production accounts for approximately half of the freshwater resources utilized in agriculture,result-ing in greenhouse gas emissions such as methane(CH4)from flooded paddy fields.To address this chal-lenge,environmentally friendly and cost-effective water-saving techniques have become widely adopted in rice cultivation.However,the implementation of water-saving treatments(WsTs)in paddy-field rice has been associated with a substantial yield loss of up to 50%as well as a reduction in nitrogen use efficiency(NUE).In this study,we discovered that the target of rapamycin(TOR)signaling pathway is compromised in rice under WsT.Polysome profiling-coupled transcriptome sequencing(polysome-seq)analysis unveiled a substantial reduction in global translation in response to WST associated with the downregulation of TOR activity.Molecular,biochemical,and genetic analyses revealed new insights into the impact of the positive TOR-S6K-RPS6 and negative TOR-MAF1 modules on translation repression under WST.Intriguingly,ammonium exhibited a greater ability to alleviate growth constraints under WsT by enhancing TOR signaling,which simultaneously promoted uptake and utilization of ammonium and nitrogen allocation.We further demonstrated that TOR modulates the ammonium transporter AMT1;1 as well as the amino acid permease APP1 and dipeptide transporter NPF7.3 at the translational level through the 5'untranslated region.Collectively,these findings reveal that enhancing TOR signaling could mitigate rice yield penalty due to WST by regulating the processes involved in protein synthesis and NUE.Our study will contribute to the breeding of new rice varieties with increased water and fertilizer utilization efficiency.

Superconducting SnTe-type topological crystalline insulators （TCIs） are predicted to host multiple Majorana zero modes（MZMs） which can coexist in a single vortex. Fermi level （FL） close to the Dirac points of topological surface states is helpful for detecting MZMs. However, the TCI SnTe is a heavily p-type semiconductor which is very difficult to modify to n-type via doping or alloying. In this work, we fabricate the atomically flat Sn1-xPbxTe/Pb heterostructure by molecular beam epitaxy, and make the p-type Sn1-xPbxTe become n-type through changing the interface roughness. Using scanning tunnelling microscope, we find the Dirac points of Sn1-xPbxTe/Pb heterostructure are always above the FL due to the Fermi level pinning （FLP） induced by topological surface states at atomically flat interface. After increasing the interface roughness, the FLP effect is suppressed and then the Dirac points of p-type Sn1-xPbxTe can be tuned very close to or even below the FL. Our work provides a new method for tuning the FL of SnTe-type TCI which has potential application in novel topological superconductor device.

Polymer chain architectures play a crucial role in the physical properties of polymers and this unique phenomenon has been recognized as the topological effects.As one of the most representative architectures,macrocyclic polymers characterized by the endless topology have received extensive attention due to their distinct physical properties as compared to the linear counterparts.To understand these differences and unravel the underlying mechanisms,there is a long pursuit to efficiently fabricate macrocyclic polymers.To date,both ring-closing and ring-expansion strategies have been developed,which drastically elevates the accessibility of macrocyclic polymers.The improved availability of macrocyclic polymers enables the further investigation of the biomedical applications and the preliminary results suggest that macrocyclic polymers outperform their linear analogs in terms of improving gene delivery efficiency,elevating blood circulation time,and enhancing colloidal stability of nanoparticles.

Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) has been extensively used in clinical diagnosis and currently over 30% MRI runs are performed in the presence of contrast agents. However, commercially available contrast agents originated from small molecules typically exhibit relatively low relaxivities and insufficient circulation time. Therefore, there is a long pursuit to develop new contrast agents with high relaxivities to discriminate pathological tissues from normal ones. Compared with small molecule MRI contrast agents, the incorporation of small molecule contrast agents into macromolecular scaffolds allows for constructing macromolecular MRI contrast agents, remarkably elevating the relaxivities due in part to increased rotational correlation time(τR). Moreover, if the macromolecular scaffolds are responsive to external stimuli, the MRI signals could be selectively switched on at the desired sites(e.g., pathological tissues), further intensifying the imaging contrast. In this feature article, we outline the recent achievements in the fabrication of stimuli-responsive macromolecular MRI contrast agents. Specifically, macromolecular contrast agents being responsive to acidic p H, redox potentials, and other stimuli including photoirradiation, pathogens, and salt concentration are discussed. These smart contrast agents could affect either longitudinal(T1) or transverse(T2) relaxation times of water protons or other nuclei(e.g.,19 F), exhibiting enhanced signals in pathological tissues yet suppressed signals in normal ones and displaying promising potentials in in vitro and in vivo MRI applications.
