Elemental variations in glacier cryoconites of Indian Himalaya and Spitsbergen,Arctic

Cryoconite samples were collected from two different climatic domains i.e.,the Sutri Dhaka glacier,western Himalaya India and Svalbard glaciers,the Spitsbergen,Arctic,to understand the elemental source and elemental deposition *** data of geochemical analysis suggest that the Himalayan cryoconite samples accumulate higher concentrations as compared to the cryoconite samples of the Arctic *** concentration of lithophile elements(Cs,Li,Rb and U)was recorded higher in the cryoconite holes of the Himalayas,especially,in the lower to the higher parts of the glacier,whereas,lower concentrations were recorded in the Arctic *** elements in the Himalayan cryoconites are enriched in As and Bi while the Arctic cryoconite samples show a higher concentration of Bi,Pb and *** higher concentrations are responsible for influencing the ecosystem and in human health related *** elements(Co,Fe,Mn and Ni)show high concentrations in the Himalayan samples,whereas,the Arctic samples show minor variations and low elemental concentration in these elements,*** addition,a few elements,such as Ag,Mg,and Ca show higher concentration in the Himalayan glacier *** also occurs in high concentrations in Arctic glacier samples.R-mode factor analysis of the Himalayas(Arctic)samples indicate that the elements are distributed in four(three)factors,explaining 89%(90%)of the variance in their elemental *** Factor 1 suggests statistically significant positive loadings for most of the lithophile,chalcophile and siderophile elements of the "Himalayan" and the Arctic cryoconite *** sample-wise factor score distribution shows a considerable variation in the sampling locations along the glaciers of both the *** 2 and 3,demonstrate insignificant loading for most of the elements,except statistically significant positive loading in some of the elements of the both,Himalayan and Arctic "cryoconites".The higher el

Multi-polarized Radarsat-2 satellite sensor in assessing forest vigor from above ground biomass

Accurate estimates of forest biomass are increasingly important in relation to sequestration of carbon by forest trees. Satellite remote sensing is a useful tool for biomass estimation and monitoring of forest ecological processes. Microwave synthetic aperture radar （SAR） can increase the accuracy of estimations of forest biomass in comparison to optical remote sensing, due to the unique capacities of SAR, including high penetrability, volumetric scattering, interaction with surface roughness, and dielectric property. We studied the potential of multi-polarized C-band Radarsat-2, a SAR technology, with HH, HV and VV polarization for estimating biomass of moist tropical Indian forest. Backscatter values are correlated with fieldbased biomass values and axe regressed to generate models for estimating biomass. HH polarization provided maximum information regarding tree biomass. A coefficient of determination of 0.49 was calculated for HH polarized C-band image with in situ measurements. An exponential model was proved to be best suited for estimating forest biomass. Correlation of 0.62 and RMSE of 24.6 t ha-1 were calculated for the relationship between estimated and predicted biomass values for the best fit model. The aver- age absolute accuracy of the model was 61%, while Willmott＇s index of agreement was 0.87. Results suggest that most of the biomass of the area ranged within 70 t ha-1 a probably due to the saturation of C-band around 60-70 t ha-1 for tropical forests.

Groundwater assists farmers to irrigate crops for fulfilling the crop-water *** agriculture system is characterized by three cropping seasons known as Kharif(monsoon),Rabi(post-monsoon)and summer(pre-monsoon).In tropical countries like India,monitoring cropping practices using optical remote sensing during Kharif and Rabi seasons is constraint due to the cloud cover,which can be well addressed by microwave remote *** the proposed research,the strength of C-band polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)time series images were evaluated to classify groundwater irrigated croplands for the Kharif and Rabi cropping seasons of the year *** present study was performed in the Berambadi experimental watershed of Kabini river basin,southern peninsular India.A total of fifteen polarimetric variables were estimated includes four backscattering coefficients(HH,HV,VH,VV)and eleven polarimetric indices for all Radarsat-2 SAR *** cumulative temporal sum(seasonal and dual-season)of these parameters was supervised classified using Support Vector Machine(SVM)classifier with intensive ground observation *** results using the best equation(highest accuracy and kappa)shows that the Kharif,Rabi and irrigated double croplands are respectively 9.58 km2(20.6%),16.14 km2(34.7%)and 6.22 km2(13.4%)with a kappa coefficient respectively 0.84,0.74 and 0.94.

Plant Community and Nutrient Status of the Soils of Schirmacher Oasis,East Antarctica

Investigations on plant community and micronutrient status of Schirmacher Oasis, East Antarctica have been presented in this paper. The dominant plant communities include moss and lichen. The frequency of species occurrence and changes in species composition at different location varied. Thirty-four soil samples were ana- lyzed for chemical properties of the soils of Schirmacher Oasis and Nunatak, East Antarctica. The most common plant species growing throughout the areas of Sehirmacher Oasis and Nunataks are： Candelariella tiara （ lichen ） and Bryum pseudotriquetrum （moss）. Large variations were observed among different soil samples in all the nutri- ents and other measured soil chemical parameters. The soils are characterized by a-cidic pH ranging from 4.42 - 6.80. The mean organic carbon content was 0.62 and ranged from 0. 06 - 1.29%. The electrical conductivity in 1 ： 2 soil water ratio ranged from 0.06 - 1.29. The average content of macronutrient cation, which are ammonium acetate extractable was in the order of Ca 〉 K 〉 Na 〉 Mg. The average content of DTPA extractable micronutrient cations was in the order of Fe 〉 Mn 〉 Cu 〉 Zn. Thirty one out of 34 samples contained less than 0.80 ppm DTPA extractable Zn. Correlation studies revealed that content of macronutrient cations significantly and positively correlated to that of chlorides. Electrical conductivity exhibited significant and positive relationship with pH, K, Ca, Mg, Na and chloride content. Sodium （r =0.876 ＊＊） exhibited highest correlation followed by K （r =0. 831 ＊＊） with chlo- ride content. The correlation coefficient for chlorides was higher with electrical conductivity （r=0.732＊＊） than pH （r =0. 513 ＊＊）. Organic carbon content of the soil was positively correlated with Fe （ r = 0. 442 ＊）. The nutrient status did not appear to be a limiting factor in growth of plants. A comprehensive review of DC fault protection methods in HVDC transmission systems

High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is an economical option for transmitting a large amount of power over long distances. Initially, HVDC was developed using thyristor-based current source converters (CSC). With the development of semiconductor devices, a voltage source converter (VSC)-based HVDC system was introduced, and has been widely applied to integrate large-scale renewables and network interconnection. However, the VSC-based HVDC system is vulnerable to DC faults and its protection becomes ever more important with the fast growth in number of installations. In this paper, detailed characteristics of DC faults in the VSC-HVDC system are presented. The DC fault current has a large peak and steady values within a few milliseconds and thus high-speed fault detection and isolation methods are required in an HVDC grid. Therefore, development of the protection scheme for a multi-terminal VSC-based HVDC system is challenging. Various methods have been developed and this paper presents a comprehensive review of the different techniques for DC fault detection, location and isolation in both CSC and VSC-based HVDC transmission systems in two-terminal and multi-terminal network configurations.

Determining Potential Passive Islanding Detection Indicators for Single-point Single Inverter,Single-point Multi-inverter and Multi-point Multi-inverter Scenarios

Distributed Generation(DG)sources,predominantly renewable energy-based,such as solar photovoltaic and wind energy sources,have significantly penetrated into power system *** high penetration of DG sources may lead to the formation of unintentional islands,which is hazardous to both the equipment and personnel,if *** this paper,46 passive parameters are considered to find out which candidate(s)are promising for detecting sustained unintentional islands and avoid false DG *** 46 parameters are derived from point of common coupling(PCC)voltage,DG output current,frequency,power factor angle,active and reactive *** these parameters are tested on standard IEEE 13 and 34 bus distribution networks,integrated with inverter-interfaced DGs at different locations for different penetration levels in the MATLAB/SIMULINK *** parameters are tested for different islanding events(comprising of various local loads,such as conventional parallel RLC resonant load,R,RC,and RL loads)and for different non-islanding *** parameters are then ranked accordingly by a suitable averaging approach based performance ranking *** this analysis,the best candidates are obtained for detecting inverter DG islands at single-point(or single PCC)locations and multi-point(or multiple PCCs)*** best passive candidates are obtained for different island scenarios from which a set of promising islanding detection indicators are proposed.

A low power, eco-friendly multipurpose thermoelectric refrigerator

There has been an immense endeavor to mitigate global warming in spite of which it has only been worse. This paper presents the design and imple- mentation of a low power and eco-friendly refrigeration system using the thermoelectric effect. The conventional refrigerators make use of complex mechanisms which involves synchronous operation of various units, namely the compressor, condensers, expansion valves, evaporator, refi＇igerant and so on. But a thermoelectric refrigerator exploits the principle of the Peltier effect, thus avoiding the utilization of these complex components. This even helps curb the release of harmful chlorofluorocarbons （CFCs） into the atmosphere which contributes to the increase in global temperature. Moreover, the temperature can be controlled and set to required values with the help of a microcontroller. Hence, this can be used both for domestic and commercial purposes. The unit does not eject any harmful gases. Therefore, the heat expelled from the unit can be tapped for heating utilities, making the use of this device versatile in its application. Thus this proposal aims not only at reducing the air pollutants by not contributing to it but also at reducing the power consumption.
