Nonlinear spring characteristics of the tense torsion bar in the gap-closing type electrostatic micromirror are examined. The macro model is introduced for the experimental study. The tension applied in the torsion bar is well controlled using the electromagnetic attraction. This controllability is suited for clearing the nonlinear nature. The tension is confirmed to have the effect to widen the controllable angle range of the mirror suppressing the pull-in. The pull-in angle is observed to increases to about 74% of the mechanical limit angle at the tension of 0,96 N. This is significantly larger than 44% of the case with the linear spring. The larger resonant frequency is maintained. The hardening of the spring can keep the balance with the electrostatic force over the limit of the linear spring. The observed features are explained reasonably with the combination of twisting and bending displacements of the torsion bar.

Assuming that secretory immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) in pre-schoolers is influenced by wake-up time, bedtime, sleeping duration and activity, the current study examined the influence of basic pre-schooler lifestyle on the circadian rhythm of s-IgA. We conducted a questionnaire survey on lifestyle and measured steps, heart rate and salivary s-IgA in 44 pre-schoolers aged 4 or 5 years old. Saliva was collected over 2 days at six time points: bedtime, upon waking up, upon arriving at nursery school, before lunch, after lunch and upon going home. To obtain relatively reliable s-IgA values, the s-IgA concentration/total protein concentration ratio (referred to as s-IgA/T.P.) was calculated. Relationship between the s-IgA/T.P. and heart rate, steps, wake-up time, bedtime and sleeping duration was then examined using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Accordingly, pre-schooler lifestyle had the following effect on circadian rhythm of s-IgA: 1) s-IgA/T.P. values were higher upon waking up than at other measurement time points;2) pre-schoolers with considerable physical activity had high s-IgA/T.P. at bedtime and upon waking up;and 3) pre-schoolers with long sleeping durations and early bedtime had high s-IgA/T.P. upon waking up. Thus, our results confirmed that pre-schoolers’ lifestyle habits, such as bedtime, sleeping duration, physical activity, had an effect on the circadian rhythm of s-IgA.

Background and Aims:The clinical introduction of hepcidin25(Hep25)has led to a more detailed understanding of its relationship with ferroportin(FP)and divalent metal transporter1 in primary iron overload syndromes(PIOSs).In 2012,we proposed a classification of PIOSs based on the Hep25/FP system,which consists of prehepatic aceruloplasminemia,hepatic hemochromatosis(HC),and posthepatic FP disease(FP-D).However,in consideration of accumulated evidence on PIOSs,we aimed to renew the ***:We reviewed the 2012 classification and retrospectively renewed it according to new information on ***:Iron-loading anemia was included in PIOSs as a prehepatic form because of the newly discovered erythroferrone-induced suppression of Hep25,and the state of traditional FP-D was remodeled as the BIOIRON *** key molecules responsible for prehepatic PIOSs are low transferrin saturation in aceruloplasminemia and increased erythroferrone production by erythroblasts in iron-loading *** PIOSs comprise four genotypes of HC,in each of which the synthesis of Hep25 is inappropriately reduced in the *** Hep25 synthesis is adequate in posthepatic PIOSs;however,two mutant FP molecules may resist Hep25 differently,resulting in SLC40A1-HC and FP-D,*** phenotypes are diagnosed using laboratory tests,including circulating Hep25,followed by suitable *** sequencing of the candidate genes may be outsourced to gene centers when *** kits for the prevalent mutations,such as C282Y,may be the first choice for a genetic analysis of HC in ***:The revised classification may be useful worldwide.

A twin unidirectional impulse turbine has been proposed in order to enhance the performance of wave energy plant. This turbine system uses two unidirectional impulse turbines and their flow direction is different each other. However, the effect of guide vane solidity on the turbine characteristics has not been clarified to date. The performances of a uni- directional impulse turbine under steady flow conditions were investigated experimentally by using a wind tunnel with large piston/cylinder in this study. Then, mean efficiency of the twin impulse turbine in bidirectional airflow has been estimated by a quasi-steady analysis using experimental results in order to investigate the effect of guide vane solidity on the performance.

Scurvy in the Postoperative Oropharyngeal Cancer Patient

Scurvy is now an almost forgotten disease, but it hasn’t yet disappeared entirely. Here, we report the case of a patient with scurvy who presented with multiple hemorrhages about 5 years after undergoing pharyngeal surgery and radiochemotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer. This 60-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of sudden onset of dyspnea and purpura. A physical examination and computed tomography revealed multifocal hemorrhages, namely, purpuras and petechiae on the legs and intramuscular and alveolar hemorrhages. Coagulation tests indicated a normal bleeding time and mild extension of the activated partial thromboplastin time. The coagulation factor activities were not low enough to account for such severe hemorrhages. No new hemorrhages were observed after admission. On questioning about his past eating habits, the patient reported having long had an extremely unbalanced diet, namely, a diet that was composed largely of carbohydrates with few fresh fruits and vegetables. This was due to the development of mechanical dysphagia after the operation. Since his vitamin C level was 0.5 μg/mL (normal range: 5.5 - 16.8 μg/mL), a diagnosis of scurvy was established. Thus, scurvy can still occur in modern times due to poor eating habits that arise from unusual settings. We must keep in mind that scurvy may be the cause when a patient presents with an apparently inexplicable tendency to hemorrhage.
