Formation of biomimetic hierarchical nanostructure in homopolymers and block copolymer ternary blend particles

In order to mimic hierarchical nanostructures in nature,particles of polymer blends consisting of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine)(PBTPA),poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMma)and PBTPA-block-PMma were fabricated by a solvent evaporation *** of the molecular weight and the chemical composition of PBTPA-b-PMma,molecular weights of homopolymers,and the composition of the blend on the morphology were *** polymer blend particle consisting of PBTPA and PMma homopolymers exhibited thermodynamically favored core-shell structure,in which more hydrophilic PMma-shell surrounded *** addition of 10 wt%of PBTPA-b-PMma caused the morphological transition from core-shell toJanus or inversed core-shell,in which PBTPA-shell surrounded PMma-core,depending on the molecular weight of PBTPA segment in *** the molecular weight of PMma segment was higher than that of PMma homopolymer,watermelon-like particles in which small PBTPA domain less than 80 nm dispersed in the PMma domain surrounded by PBTPA shell were *** the ratio of PBTPA-b-PMma increased,the interface of the macrophase separation became *** 50 wt%of the PBTPA-b-PMma,only microphase separation was *** measurement of interfacial tension by pendant drop method demonstrated that PBTPA-b-PMma lower the interfacial tension between PBTPA and the aqueous phase to the value similar to that of PMma with the aqueous phase.

Alterations in cellular metabolism may contribute to tumor proliferation and *** of the facilitative glucose transporter(GLUT)plays a key role in promoting ***5 mediates modulation of fructose utilization,and its overexpression has been associated with poor prognosis in several ***,its metabolic regulation remains poorly ***,we demonstrated elevated GLUT5 expression in human cholangiocarcinoma(CCA),using RNA sequencing data from samples of human tissues and cell lines,as compared to normal liver tissues or a cholangiocyte cell *** exhibiting highexpression of GLUT5 showed increased rates of cell proliferation and ATP production,particularly in a fructose-supplemented *** contrast,GLUT5 silencing attenuated cell proliferation,ATP production,cell migration/invasion,and improved epithelialemesenchymal transition(EMT)***,fructose consumption increased tumor growth in a nude mouse xenograft model,and GLUT5 silencing suppressed growth,supporting the tumor-inhibitory effect of GLUT5 ***,in the metabolic pathways of fructolysis-Warburg effect,the expression levels of relative downstream genes,including ketohexokinase(KHK),aldolase B(ALDOB),lactate dehydrogenase A(LDHA),and monocarboxylate transporter 4(MCT4),as well as hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha(HIF1A),were altered in a GLUT5 expression-dependent *** together,these findings indicate that GLUT5 could be a potential target for CCA therapeutic approach via metabolic regulation.

Nitrative and oxidative DNA damage in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients in relation to tumor invasion

AIM： Nitrative and oxidative DNA damage such as 8-nitroguanine and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2＇-deoxyguanosine （8-oxodG） formation has been implicated in initiation and/ or promotion of inflammation-mediated carcinogenesis. The aim of this study is to clarify whether these DNA lesions participate in the progression of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS： We investigated the relation of the formation of 8-nitroguanine and 8-oxodG and the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α （HIF-1α） with tumor invasion in 37 patients with intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma. RESULTS： Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that 8-nitroguanine and 8-oxodG formation occurred to a much greater extent in cancerous tissues than in non-cancerous tissues. HIF-1α could be detected in cancerous tissues in all patients, suggesting low oxygen tension in the tumors. HIF-1α expression was correlated with inducible niltric oxide synthase （iNOS） expression （r = 0.369 and P = 0.025） and 8-oxodG formation （r = 0.398 and P = 0.015）. Double immunofluorescence study revealed that iNOS and HIF-1α co-localized in cancerous tissues. Notably, the formation of 8-oxodG was correlated significantly with lymphatic invasion （r = 0.386 and P = 0.018）. Moreover, 8- nitroguanine and 8-oxodG in non-cancerous tissues were associated significantly with neural invasion （P = 0.042 and P = 0.026, respectively）. These results suggest that reciprocal activation between HIF-1α and iNOS mediates persistent DNA damage, which induces tumor invasiveness via mutations, resulting in poor prognosis. CONCLUSION： The formation of 8-nitroguanine and 8-oxodG plays an important role in multiple steps of genetic changes leading to tumor progression, including invasiveness.

Defensive medicine practices among gastroenterologists in Japan

AIM： To clarify the prevalence of defensive medicine and the specific defensive medicine practices among gastroenterologists in Japan. METHODS： A survey of gastroenterologists in Hiroshima, Japan, was conducted by mail in march 2006. The number of gastroenterologists reporting defensive medicine behaviors or changes in their scope of practice and the reported defensive medicine practices, i.e., assurance and avoidance behaviors, were examined. RESULTS： A total of 131 （77%） out of 171 gastroenterologists completed the survey. Three （2%） respondents were sued, and most respondents （96%） had liability insurance. Nearly all respondents （98%） reported practicing defensive medicine. Avoidance behaviors, such as avoiding certain procedures or interventions and avoiding caring for high-risk patients, were very common （96%）. Seventy-five percent of respondents reported often avoiding certain procedures or interventions. However, seasoned gastroenterologists （those in practice for more than 20 years） adopted avoidance behaviors significantly less often than those in practice for less than 10 years. Assurance behaviors, i.e., supplying additional services of marginal or no medical value, were also widespread （91%）. Sixty-eight percent of respondents reported that they sometimes or often referred patients to other specialists unnecessarily. CONCLUSION： Defensive medicine may be highly prevalent among gastroenterologists throughout 3apan, with potentially serious implications regarding costs, access, and both technical and interpersonal quality of care.

Quantitative Assessment of Air Trapping Using Inspiratory and Expiratory Low-Dose Computed Tomography

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of radiation dose reduction on the quantification of air trapping on expiratory CT. materials and methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective evaluation of inspiratory and expiratory CT studies performed in routine clinical practice before and after alteration of the scanning protocol for expiratory CT at our institute. Eighty-six patients who had a clinical diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and underwent inspiratory and expiratory CT and pulmonary function testing (PFT) were included. For the quantitative analysis, CT scans were obtained at six evenly spaced levels from the lung apices to the bases. The area of segmented lung without emphysema between -500 to -950 HU was obtained from the summation of six slices. The relative area between -900 and -950 HU for the area of the segmented lung (RA900-950) was calculated on both the inspiratory and expiratory scans. Comparisons of the RA-change between the standard-dose group (200 ma) and the low-dose group (80 ma) were performed by mann-Whitney U test. Results: There was no significant difference between the standard-dose group and the low-dose group in the mean RA-change, and RA-change in both the standard-dose and low-dose groups correlated significantly with the results of PFT. In addition, there were no prominent differences in the correlation coefficients between the two groups. Conclusions: Low-dose CT could evaluate air trapping objectively and was not inferior to standard-dose CT for this purpose.

We have established a new record conversion efficiency of 21.5% for HIT solar cell (Voc: 712mV, Jsc: 38.26ma/cm2, FF: 0.787, 100.3cm2, measured at AIST). Also worthy of special mentions are the very high fill factor (FF) of 0.802 and the very high open circuit voltage (Voc) of over 725mV for other efficient solar cells. Additional practical advantage of the HIT cells is the relatively small temperature coefficients, which is another practical advantage of the HIT cell. The insight of the small temperature coefficients is also discussed by comparing other solar cells.
