Surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence of esophageal cancer after curative esophagectomy

Aim:To clarify the significance of surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence after curative esophagectomy for esophageal ***:Clinical details,such as the recurrence site,timing,and contents of therapies for recurrence,and the prognosis,were examined in 14 patients who underwent surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence that developed after curative ***:The median disease-free interval after esophagectomy was 17.2 *** patients underwent pulmonary resection two times,and in one patient,three *** pulmonary resections were performed when other extra-pulmonary recurrences had been controlled,and R0 resection was *** and/or radiotherapy were additionally performed for pulmonary metastasis in 13 *** median survival time after initial pulmonary resection was 45.5 months,and the 1-,3-,and 5-year overall survival rates were 93%,68%,and 43%,*** 5-year overall survival rate after initial pulmonary resection was 13%in patients with Stage III or IV esophageal cancer and 100%in those with Stage I or II disease(P=0.010).The rate was 56%in patients with tumors<20 mm in size,while all 5 patients with lesions≥20 mm in size died within 3 years(P=0.005).Conclusion:Surgical resection along with systemic therapy is a promising treatment strategy for pulmonary recurrence after curative esophagectomy when it is solitary and *** factors,such as the esophageal cancer stage and the size of the pulmonary metastasis,are useful for deciding on the surgical indication.

Boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon by oxidizing refining

A purification process was developed to remove impurity element boron from the metallurgical grade silicon by the electric arc furnace refining. The thermodynamic equilibria calculation and experiment to remove boron in the oxidizing atmosphere were performed and analyzed. Boron is removed as the gaseous species BxOy and BxHzOy in O2 and H2O-O2 atmosphere respectively. The equilibrium pressure of BxHzOy is 105-1010 times that of BxOy. Boron is removed and its content in silicon is reduced from 18× 10-6 to 2×10-6 in the Ar-H2O-O2 atmosphere in the electric arc furnace.

Temperature Measurement of Supercooled Droplet in Icing Phenomenon by means of Dual-luminescent Imaging

The collision of a supercooled water droplet with a surface result an object creates ice accretion on the surface. The icing problem in any cold environments leads to severe damages on aircrafts, and a lot of studies on prevention and prediction techniques for icing have been conducted so far. Therefore, it is very important to know the detail of freezing mechanism of supercooled water droplets to improve the anti-and de-icing devices and icing simulation codes. The icing mechanism of a single supercooled water droplet impacting on an object surface would give us great insights for the purpose. In the present study, we develop a dual-luminescent imaging technique to measure the time-resolved temperature of a supercooled water droplet impacting on the surface under different temperature conditions. We apply this technique to measure the exact temperature of a water droplet, and to discuss the detail of the freezing process.

Differentiation of focal liver lesions using three-dimensional ultrasonography: Retrospective and prospective studies

AIM: To differentiate focal liver lesions based on enhancement patterns using three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D US) with perflubutane-based contrast ***: Two hundred and eighty two patients with focal liver lesions,including 168 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs),63 metastases,40 hemangiomas and 11 focal nodular hyperplasias (FNHs),were examined by 3D US with perflubutane-based contrast *** ultrasound images and sonographic angiograms were *** 282 lesions,enhancement patterns of 163 lesions between January 2007 and October 2007 were analyzed *** from November 2007 to May 2008,compared with contrast-enhanced (CE) 2D US,CE 3D US was performed on 119 lesions for prospective differential ***,specificity,area under receiver operating characteristic curve (Az) and inter-reader agreement were ***: With the tridimensional view,dominant enhancement patterns were revealed as diffuse enhancement or peripheral ring-like enhancement,followed with washout change for HCCs or metastases,respectively,and peripheral nodular enhancement or diffuse enhancement with spoke-wheel arteries,followed by persistent enhancement for hemangiomas or FNHs,*** CE 3D US,the prospective differentiation of lesions showed sensitivity 92% (mean for two readers),specificity 91% and Az value 0.95 for HCCs,84%,97%,and 0.95 for metastases,91%,98%,and 0.98 for hemangiomas and 80%,99%,and 0.99 for FNHs,respectively,while good to excellent inter-reader agreement was *** significant difference exists between prospective diagnosis accuracy at CE 3D US and that at CE 2D ***: CE 3D US provides a spatial perspective for liver tumor enhancement,and could help in differentiating focal liver lesions.

Potent water extracts of Indonesian medicinal plants against PTP1B

Objective:To examine the potent of water as a solvent agent in the preparation of traditional herbal ***:Water extracts of 18 plants were prepared through reflux and examined(25μg/mL) to evaluate their possibility for inhibiting protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B(PTP1B).The determination of IC50 values was performed for the samples possessing more than 80%***,those exhibiting IC50 values more than 7.0 μg/mL were further profiled for their chemical constituents through nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) ***:About 44%(8) of the examined samples showed more than 80%inhibition against PTP1 *** water extracts of Elephantopus scaber,Helicteres isora aerial parts,Elaeocarpus grandiflorus(***) fruits,Melaleuca leucadendron leaves,and Quercus infectoria gum had IC50 values ranging from 2.05 to 6.90 μg/***,Andropogon nardus and Centella asiatica were at the area of δ 3.0-4.0 ***,the13 C NMR observation of samples possessing the most intensive signals in their proton NMR Cinnamomum burmannii and *** showed the peaks at the area of δ 60-90 ppm as the supportive evidence for sugar group ***,a disaccharide from *** could be an active inhibitor towards PTB1 ***:In contrast to the mainstream solvents currently used in modern herbal manufactures especially Jamu medicine in Indonesia,pure-water-extracted materials should be reconsidered and could be reemerged for future studies and for the manufacture of herbal *** addition,the activity of Jamu components should be confirmed that their antidiabetes and antiobesity activities could be through the inhibition of PTP1 B.

Intuitive Concept or Physical Meaning of Lagrangian

The authors have been studying on the principle of motion generation behind animals, mainly human, and have reached a certain milestone with it in [1]. Because [1] ended up being very interdisciplinary, the author has been looking for an opportunity to close in on the part where we have grasped the conceptual idea of a Lagrangian. This paper proposes the physical meaning or its intuitive concept of a Lagrangian. This is a daring attempt because the topic is over 240 years of enigma, whereby so many have neglected of its absence, and physics has gone further towards its frontiers of their time, and has successfully flourished. Meanwhile, Lagrangian is not getting enough of teachers’ attention on students getting stuck on this function, despite the fact that it is a strong foundation as is only the beginning towards Hamiltonian formalism, general relativity, and modern physics of today. This paper’s sole motive is to answer what the title says in detail, helping each and everyone who faces Lagrangian for their first time. The paper is positioned to be a supplement for [1]. This literature had three topics bound into one. Out of the three, this document focuses in the part of the intuitive meaning of Lagrangian, since the paper had contents related to multiple disciplines. The author finds it worthy to discuss this topic in an independent, more detailed manner.

Stability of pyrrolidone derivatives against γ-ray irradiation

To evaluate the stability of N-alkylated pyrrolidone derivatives(NRPs),which are supposed to be used as precipitants for U(VI) and Pu(IV,VI) species in HNO 3 media,under irradiation environment,some candidate NRPs were irradiated by γ-*** to HNO 3 solutions up to 6 mol dm 3(= M) containing 2 M N-n-butyl-2-pyrrolidone(NBP),one of NRPs with lower hydrophobicity,has revealed that the residual ratios of NBP in the samples of HNO 3 up to 3 M decreased identically and *** 20% of NBP was found to be degraded after the irradiation at 1 *** was also found that the decrease in the precipitation ratio of UO 2 2+(P.R.,%) was gentle and that the *** were relatively in accordance with the residual ratios of *** the other hand,the degradation of the samples irradiated in 6 M HNO 3 was found more *** was proposed from the analyses of degraded compounds that the degradation of NBP in HNO 3 by γ-ray irradiation started from the cleavage of the pyrrolidone ring by the addition of oxygen atom originating from HNO 3,followed by the formation of chain compounds by the successive addition of oxygen,leading to the generation of oxalic acid and acetic *** stability of other NRPs in 3 M HNO 3 was evaluated to be nearly identical with that of NBP except lower *** of the samples containing NRPs with higher hydrophobicity irradiated at more than 0.5 MGy.

Empirical correlations for predicting the self-leveling behavior of debris bed

Studies on the self-leveling behavior of debris bed are crucial for the assessment of core-disruptive accident (CDA) occurred in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR). To clarify this behavior over a comparatively wider range of gas velocities, a series of experiments were performed by injecting nitrogen gas uniformly from a pool bottom. Current experiments were conducted in a cylindrical tank, in which water, nitrogen gas and different kinds of solid particles, simulate the coolant, vapor (generated by coolant boiling) and fuel debris, respectively. Based on the quantitative data obtained (mainly the time variation of bed inclination angle), with the help of dimensional analysis technique, a set of empirical correlations to predict the self-leveling development depending on particle size, particle density and gas injection velocity was proposed and discussed. It was seen that good agreement could be obtained between the calculated and experimental values. Rationality of the correlations was further confirmed through detailed analyses of the effects of experimental parameters such as particle size, particle density, gas flow rate and boiling mode. In order to facilitate future analyses and simulations of CDAs in SFRs, the obtained results in this work will be utilized for the validations of an advanced fast reactor safety analysis code.
