electrochemical anodization of cast titanium alloys in oxalic acid for biomedical applications

Titanium and its alloys have numerous biomedical applications thanks to the composition and morphology of their oxide *** this study,the colorful oxide films were formed by anodizing cast Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys in a 10%oxalic acid solution for 30 s at different voltages(20–80 V)of a direct current power *** force microscopy was used as an accurate tool to measure the surface roughness of thin films on the nanometer *** electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were performed to analyze surface morphology and phase *** to the results,the produced titanium oxide layer showed high surface roughness,which increased with increasing anodizing *** impact of anodizing voltages on the color and roughness of anodized layers was *** corrosion resistance of the anodized samples was studied in simulated body fluid at pH 7.4 and a temperature of 37℃ utilizing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the potentiodynamic polarization *** anodized samples for both alloys at 40 V were at the optimal voltage,leading to a TiO_(2) layer formation with the best compromise between oxide thickness and corrosion ***,findings showed that TiO_(2) films produced on Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys had superior surface roughness properties compared to those of Ti-6Al-4V alloys,making them more appropriate for orthopedic *** the obtained data and the fruitful discussion,it was found that the utilized procedure is simple,low-cost,and ***,anodization in 10%oxalic acid proved a viable alternative for the surface finishing of titanium alloys for biomedical applications.

Comparative study between three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts for antimicrobial applications

The design of nanostructured materials occupies a privileged position in the development and management of affordable and effective technology in the antibacterial ***,we discuss the antimicrobial properties of three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts materials of graphene oxide(GO),reduced graphene oxide(RGO),and single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)that have a mechano-bactericidal effect,and the ability to piercing or slicing bacterial *** demonstrate the significance of size,morphology and composition on the antibacterial activity mechanism,the designed nanomaterials have been *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC),standard agar well diffusion,and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to evaluate the antibacterial activity of GO,RGO,and *** on the evidence obtained,the three carbonaceous materials exhibit activity against all microbial strains tested by completely encapsulating bacterial cells and causing morphological disruption by degrading the microbial cell membrane in the order of RGO>GO>*** of the external cell wall structure and outer membrane proteins,the synthesized carbonaceous nanomaterials exhibited higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains than Gram-negative and fungal *** had the lowest MIC values(0.062,0.125,and 0.25 mg/mL against ***,***,and ***,respectively),as well as minimum fungal concentrations(0.5 mg/mL for both *** and ***).At 12 hr,the cell viability values against tested microbial strains were completely *** lysis and death occurred as a result of severe membrane damage caused by microorganisms perched on RGO *** work gives an insight into the design of effective graphene-based antimicrobial materials for water treatment and remediation.

Objective:To evaluate the combination therapy of pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate against Babesia in vitro and in ***:Bioinformatic analysis was performed using atom pair *** in vitro combination test was performed against Babesia bovis and Theileria ***,the in vivo chemotherapeutic efficacy of pyronaridine tetraphosphate in combination with diminazene aceturate was investigated against the growth of Babesia microti in mice using a fluorescence inhibitory ***:Pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate exhibited nearly similar molecular *** in vitro combination of pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate was synergistic on Babesia bovis and additive on Theileria *** addition,5 mg/kg pyronaridine tetraphosphate combined with 10 mg/kg diminazene aceturate inhibited Babesia microti growth significantly compared with those observed after treatment with 25 mg/kg diminazene aceturate alone from day 6 post treatment to day 12 post *** combination therapy also normalized the hematological parameters of infected ***:An oral dose of pyronaridine tetraphosphate combined with a subcutaneous dose of diminazene aceturate inhibits Babesia in vitro and in mice,suggesting it might be a new paradigm for the treatment of babesiosis.

Tier-based approach to establish a culture of biosafety at a medical microbiology research laboratory in Egypt

Microbiology Research Laboratory(MRL)is a biosafety level-2(BSL-2)research laboratory located at the main campus of Faculty of Medicine,Ain Shams University(ASU)in *** the objective of strengthening the departmental capacities of biosafety,a series of activities were carried out between October 2019,and January 2020 to raise awareness,along with instilling standard biosafety practices and procedures among laboratory staff including non-health *** staff were categorized according to their biosafety knowledge into three tiers:tier(1):with zero to minimal knowledge,tier(2):with basic knowledge,tier(3):with satisfactory *** based activities were designed to align with their job ***:44 selected laboratory staff were trained on biosafety practices:12 from tier(1),19 from tier(2)and 13 constituted tier(3).Through regular follow-ups,the impact of the implemnted training plan was reflected on the practices and knowledge of all laboratory *** among health professions has increased by 60%.Furthermore,6 staff members have granted a biosafety certification by International Federation of Biosafety Association(IFBSA).Conclusion:establishing a culture of biosafety within microbiology research laboratories is integral to safe research *** with developing local and national biosafety regulations and policies will ensure research advancement without compromising public health or environmental safety.

Preparation and characterization of (CeO2)x-(Fe2O3)1-x nanocomposites:reduction kinetics and hydrogen storage

A series of nanosized CeO2-Fe2O3 mixed-oxide nanocomposites with different Ce4+/Fe3+molar ratios were successfully prepared by a co-precipitation *** surface area increased with Fe2O3 content increasing up to 60 wt%in the ***,with further increase in Fe2O3 content,the surface area began to *** reduction processes of the CeO2-Fe2O3 nanocomposites were studied in a hydrogen atmosphere at 300-600℃.The reduction rates increased by increasing both the temperature and Fe2O3 content in the *** microstructure of the reduced composites at 500℃illustrated the presence of a considerable number of macro-and *** activation energy values were calculated which were in the range of 3.56-5.37 kJ mol-1 at the initial stages(up to 35%reduction)and 5.21-10.2 kJ·mol-1 at the final stages(up to 80%reduction)of *** rate-controlling mechanisms in both the initial and final reduction stages were determined,and the initial reaction stage was controlled by combined gaseous diffusion and interfacial chemical reaction mechanisms for all the composites except for pure CeO2,which was controlled by a chemical reaction *** final reaction stage was controlled by a gaseous diffusion mechanism for some composites,while for the others it was controlled by combined gaseous diffusion and interfacial chemical reaction *** hydrogen sorption properties of the nanocomposites were studied by pressure composition isotherms using a volumetric *** storage in the nanocomposites increased by increasing the temperature because of the formation of oxygen vacancies which enhance atomic H adsorption and function as strong adsorption sites forming more metal hydride covalent bonds.

Optical properties and radiative rates of Nd^(3+) doped zinc-sodium phosphate glasses

Preparation using melt quenching technique and optical characterizations of Nd^(3+) doped Zn-Na phosphate glasses are presented. The structure of the present glasses was studied using X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. UV-vis spectra of the present glasses were analyzed at different concentrations of Nd_2 O_3. The effect of neodymium concentration on the density and energy band gap was investigated. The density of the present glasses slightly increases with the increasing of Nd_2 O_3. A small variation of energy band gap with the increasing of neodymium content is observed as well, while E_g values decrease with the increase of Nd_2 O_3 content. The E_g values lie between 4.36 and 4.69 eV. Based on the measured optical spectra, Judd-Ofelt theory was used to determine the optical parameters such as line strengths, optical intensity parameters(Ω_t), transition probabilities, and transition lifetimes. Hypersensitive transitions were identified in the absorption spectrum, the greatest line strengths are recorded at the transitions^2 G_(7/2)+ ~4 G_(5/2), ~4 S_(3/2) + ~4 F_(7/2) and ~4 D_(1/2) + ~4 D_(3/2)+ ~4 D_(5/2) + ~2 I_(11/2) with wavelengths of 580, 475 and 355 nm,respectively. Lifetimes of the important ~4 F_(3/2) laser-level were determined; which show decreasing trend with the increasing of Nd_2 O_3 content and are found to be between 0.838 and 1.595 ms. The uncertainty of the present results was estimated. The RMS deviations were determined, which show lower values than those in the literature.

Pancreatic pseudocyst or a cystic tumor of the pancreas?

Pancreatic pseudocysts are the most common cystic lesions of the pancreas and may complicate acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, or pancreatic trauma. While the majority of acute pseudocysts resolve spontaneously, few may require drainage. On the other hand, pancreatic cystic tumors, which usually require extirpation, may disguise as pseudocysts. Hence, the distinction between the two entities is crucial for a successful outcome. We conducted this study to highlight the fundamental differences between pancreatic pseudocysts and cystic tumors so that relevant management plans can be devised. We reviewed the data of patients with pancreatic cystic lesions that underwent intervention between June 2007 and December 2010 in our hospital. We identified 9 patients(5 males and 4 females) with a median age of 40 years(range, 30–70 years). Five patients had pseudocysts, 2 had cystic tumors, and 2 had diseases of undetermined pathology. Pancreatic pseudocysts were treated by pseudocystogastrostomy in 2 cases and percutaneous drainage in 3 cases. One case recurred after percutaneous drainage and required pseudocystogastrostomy. The true pancreatic cysts were serous cystadenoma, which was treated by distal pancreatectomy, and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, which was initially treated by drainage, like a pseudocyst, and then by distal pancreatectomy when its true nature was revealed. We conclude that every effort should be exerted to distinguish between pancreatic pseudocysts and cystic tumors of the pancreas to avoid the serious misjudgement of draining rather than extirpating a pancreatic cystic tumor. Additionally, percutaneous drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst is a useful adjunct that may substitute for surgical drainage.

Melatonin and schistosomal antigens ameliorate the anti-oxidative and biochemical response to Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamster

The present study was designed to investigate the potential protective effect of melatonin as an antioxidant separately or in combination with antigens (cercarial; CAP or soluble worm; SWAP) against Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamsters. Each hamster was sensitized with an initial immunization of 0.6 ml of the extracted antigen (30 μg protein/mL). After four days,a second injection of 0.4 mL was given (20 μg protein/mL). Then,each hamster was exposed to 260±20 *** cercariae followed with melatonin treatment (3.5 mg/kg) for thirty days from the 1st day of post infection. Levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) products,catalase (CAT) activity,hepatic glutathione (GSH) and biochemical changes in the liver and kidneys functions were investigated. The results revealed a high significant increasing of LPO and decreasing of CAT and GSH in liver of infected hamsters. Biochemical observations showed severe damage in the liver enzyme activities and increasing cholesterol level in infected animals. Melatonin co-treatment with antigen to the infected-hamster attenuated the increase of LPO and restored the activity of CAT and levels of hepatic GSH. Also,the biochemical damages in the liver and kidneys functions were reduced. The present study suggests that melatonin may be useful in combating free radical-induced damage due to infection toxicity. The immunization with previous antigens resulted in a remarkable improvement on the liver enzyme activities,which were increased after infection. Thus,vaccination of hamsters with antigens (both CAP and SWAP) and melatonin treatment has more potent effect on the enhancement of antioxidant and biochemical of *** infected-hamster than each treatment separately. Immunization of the hamster with SWAP followed by melatonin was the best way among the other regime treatments to improve the biochemical and antioxidant parameters of the
