Down-scaled regional ocean modeling system (ROMS) for high-resolution coastal hydrodynamics in Korea

A down-scaled operational oceanographic system is developed for the coastal waters of Korea using a re- gional ocean modeling system （ROMS）. The operational oceanographic modeling system consists of at- mospheric and hydrodynamic models. The hydrodynamic model, ROMS, is coupled with wave, sediment transport, and water quality modules. The system forecasts the predicted results twice a day on a 72 h basis, including sea surface elevation, currents, temperature, salinity, storm surge height, and wave information for the coastal waters of Korea. The predicted results are exported to the web-GIS-based coastal informa- tion system for real-time dissemination to the public and validation with real-time monitoring data using visualization technologies. The ROMS is two-way coupled with a simulating waves nearshore model, SWAN, for the hydrodynamics and waves, nested with the meteorological model, WRE for the atmospheric surface forcing, and externally nested with the eutrophication model, CE-QUAL-ICM, for the water quality. The op- erational model, ROMS, was calibrated with the tidal surface observed with a tide-gage and verified with current data observed by bottom-mounted ADCP or AWAC near the coastal waters of Korea. To validate the predicted results, we used real-time monitoring data derived from remote buoy system, HF-radar, and geostationary ocean color imager （GOCI）. This down-scaled operational coastal forecasting system will be used as a part of the Korea operational oceanographic system （KOOS） with other operational oceanographic systems.

Introduction Neuroendocrine tumors(NETs)are neoplasms with variable malignant potential that may arise from neuroendocrine *** gastrointestinal tract is a common site for primary NETs and annually 1.3 for every 100,000 persons are newly detected[1,2].Although gastrointestinal NETs are common in the small bowel,appendix,rectum,and stomach,those that arise from the extra-hepatic bile duct are extremely rare(0.1%–0.4%)[3-5].

High-power and long-life supercapacitive performance of hierarchical, 3-D urchin-like W18049 nanostructure electrodes

We report the facile, one-pot synthesis of 3-D urchin-like W18O49 nanostructures （U-WO） via a simple solvothermal approach. An excellent supercapacitive performance was achieved by the U-WO because of its large Brunauer-Emmett- Teller （BET） specific surface area （ca. 123 m2.g-1） and unique morphological and structural features. The U-WO electrodes not only exhibit a high rate-capability with a specific capacitance （Csp） of -235 F·g-1 at a current density of 20 A.g-1, but also superior long-life performance for 1,000 cycles, and even up to 7,000 cycles, showing -176 F·g-1 at a high current density of 40 A.g-1.

The neuroprotective function of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in ischemic stroke was rarely *** study aimed to investigate the effects of early treadmill exercise on recovery from ischemic stroke and to determine whether these effects are associated with the expression levels of MIF and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) in the ischemic area.A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the ischemia and exercise group [middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)-Ex,n = 10),ischemia and sedentary group(MCAO-St,n = 10),sham-surgery and exercise group(Sham-Ex,n= 10),or sham-surgery and sedentary group(Sham-St,n = 10).The MCAO-Ex and MCAO-St groups were subjected to MCAO for 60 minutes,whereas the Sham-Ex and Sham-St groups were subjected to an identical operation without *** in the MCAO-Ex and Sham-Ex groups then ran on a treadmill for 30 minutes once a day for 5 consecutive *** reperfusion,the hanging time tested by the wire hang test was longer and the relative fractional anisotropy determined by MRI was higher in the peri-infarct region of the MCAO-Ex group compared with the MCAO-St *** expression levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region were upregulated in the MCAO-Ex *** MIF and BDNF levels were positively correlated with relative fractional anisotropy changes in the peri-infarct *** was no significant difference in the levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region between the Sham-Ex and Sham-St *** study demonstrated that early exercise(initiated 48 hours after the MCAO) could improve motor and neuronal recovery after ischemic ***,the increased levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region(penumbra) may be one of the mechanisms of enhanced neurological function *** experiments were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in Asan Medical Center in South Korea(2016-12-126).

Boosting Pseudocapacitive Behavior of Supercapattery Electrodes by Incorporating a Schottky Junction for Ultrahigh Energy Density

Pseudo-capacitive negative electrodes remain a major bottleneck in the development of supercapacitor devices with high energy density because the electric double-layer capacitance of the negative electrodes does not match the pseudocapacitance of the corresponding positive *** the present study,a strategically improved Ni-Co-Mo sulfide is demonstrated to be a promising candidate for high energy density supercapattery devices due to its sustained pseudocapacitive charge storage *** pseudocapacitive behavior is enhanced when operating under a high current through the addition of a classical Schottky junction next to the electrode-electrolyte interface using atomic layer *** Schottky junction accelerates and decelerates the diffusion of OH-/K+ions during the charging and discharging processes,respectively,to improve the pseudocapacitive *** resulting pseudocapacitive negative electrodes exhibits a specific capacity of 2,114 C g^(-1)at 2 A g^(-1)matches almost that of the positive electrode’s 2,795 C g^(-1)at 3 A g^(-1).As a result,with the equivalent contribution from the positive and negative electrodes,an energy density of 236.1 Wh kg^(-1)is achieved at a power density of 921.9 W kg^(-1)with a total active mass of 15 mg *** strategy demonstrates the possibility of producing supercapacitors that adapt well to the supercapattery zone of a Ragone plot and that are equal to batteries in terms of energy density,thus,offering a route for further advances in electrochemical energy storage and conversion processes.

Tetramic acid-containing natural products are attracting significantly increasing attention from biologists and chemists due to their intriguing structures and biological *** the present study,two new tetramic acid alkaloids tolypyridone I(1)and tolypyridone J(2),together with five known ones(3–7),were isolated from cultures of a marine fungus Tolypocladium cylindrosporum FB06 isolate obtained from a marine sediment in Beaufort sea of North *** structures were elucidated using 1D,2D NMR,and *** configurations were established on the basis of 1H coupling constants,ROESY correlations and DP4 *** 2 was isolated as mixtures of rotational isomers with C-3 to C-7 axis between 4-hydroxy-2-pyridone and 1-ethyl-3,5-dimethylcyclohexane,hindering *** our unbiased screening to discover neuroprotective compounds in an in vitro Parkinson’s disease(PD)model,SH-SY5Y dopaminergic cells were treated with isolated compounds followed by treatment with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium(MPP^(+)),a parkinsonian *** tested compounds,F-14329(7)significantly protected cells from MPP^(+)-induced ***^(+)-mediated cell death is known to be related to the regulation of Bcl-2 family proteins,specifically the down-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and the up-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax *** with 2 mmol/L of MPP^(+)for 24 h significantly reduced Bcl-2 levels compared to control treated with ***,treatment with F-14329(7)attenuated such *** study demonstrates that tetramic acid-motif compounds could be potential lead compounds for treating PD.

Fatty acid oxidation and autophagy promote endoxifen resistance and counter the effect of AKT inhibition in ER-positive breast cancer cells

Tamoxifen(TAM)is the first-line endocrine therapy for estrogen receptor-positive(ER+)breast cancer(BC).However,acquired resistance occurs in∼50%***,although the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is a viable target for treatment of endocrine therapy-refractory patients,complex signaling feedback loops exist,which can counter the effectiveness of inhibitors of this ***,we analyzed signaling pathways and metabolism in ER+MCF7 BC cell line and their TAM-resistant derivatives that are co-resistant to endoxifen using immunoblotting,quantitative polymerase chain reaction,and the Agilent Seahorse XF *** found that activation of AKT and the energy-sensing kinase AMPK was increased in TAM and endoxifen-resistant ***,ERRα/PGC-1βand their target genes MCAD and CPT-1 were increased and regulated by AMPK,which coincided with increased fatty acid oxidation(FAO)and autophagy in TAM-resistant *** of AKT feedback-activates AMPK and ERRα/PGC-1β-MCAD/CPT-1 with a consequent increase in FAO and autophagy that counters the therapeutic effect of endoxifen and AKT ***,our results indicate increased activation of AKT and AMPK with metabolic reprogramming and increased autophagy in TAM-resistant *** inhibition of AKT and FAO/autophagy is necessary to fully sensitize resistant cells to endoxifen.

Inverse relationship between bioavailable testosterone and subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese Korean men

Although low testosterone levels in men have been associated with high risk for cardiovascular disease, little is known about the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary disease in men with apparently low cardiometabolic risk. This study was performed to investigate the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary artery calcification measured as coronary calcium score in non-obese Korean men. We examined the relationship of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, bioavai lable testosterone and free testosterone with coronary calcium score in 291 non-obese Korean men （mean age： 52.8--- 9.3 years） not having a history of cardiovascular disease. Using multiple linear regression, we evaluated associations between log （sex hormone） levels and log （coronary calcium score） after adjusting for confounding variables in 105 men with some degree of coronary calcification defined as coronary calcium score ~〉 1. In multiple linear regression analysis, bioavailable testosterone was inversely associated with coronary calcium score （P=0.046） after adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, mean blood pressure, resting heart rate, C-reactive protein, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein （HDL） cholesterol, hypertension medication and hyperlipidernia medication, whereas total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin and free testosterone were not （P=0.674, P=O. 121 and P=O. 102, respectively）. Our findings indicate that bioavailable testosterone is inversely associated with the degree of subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese men.

Laser direct-writing enables micro and nanoscale patterning,and is thus widely used for cutting-edge research and industrial *** nanolithography methods,such as near-field,plasmonic,and scanning-probe lithography,are gaining increasing attention because they enable fabrication of high-resolution nanopatterns that are much smaller than the wavelength of ***,conventional methods are limited by low throughput and scalability,and tend to use electron beams or focused-ion beams to create *** this study,we developed a procedure for massively parallel direct writing of nanoapertures using a multi-optical probe system and superresolution near-fields.A glass micro-Fresnel zone plate array,which is an ultra-precision far-field optical system,was designed and fabricated as the multi-optical probe *** a chalcogenide phase-change material(PCM),multiple layers of Sb_(65)Se_(35) were used to generate the super-resolution near-field effect.A nanoaperture was fabricated through direct laser writing on a large-area(200×200mm^(2))multi-layered PCM.A photoresist nanopattern was fabricated on an 8-inch wafer via near-field nanolithography using the developed nanoaperture and an i-line commercial exposure *** other methods,this technique allows high-throughput large-area nanolithography and overcomes the gap-control issue between the probe array and the patterning surface.
