Algal removal from cyanobacteria-rich waters by preoxidation-assisted coagulation-flotation: Effect of algogenic organic matter release on algal removal and trihalomethane formation

The cyanobacteria-bloom in raw waters frequently causes an unpredictable chemical dosing of preoxidation and coagulation for an effective removal of algal cells in water treatment plants. This study investigated the effects of preoxidation with NaOCl and ClO_2 on the coagulation-flotation effectiveness in the removal of two commonly blooming cyanobacteria species, Microcystis aeruginosa（MA） and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii（CR）, and their corresponding trihalomethane（THM） formation potential. The results showed that dual dosing with NaOCl plus ClO_2 was more effective in enhancing the deformation of cyanobacterial cells compared to single dosing with Na OCl, especially for CR-rich *** preoxidation approaches for CR-rich water effectively reduced the CR cell count with less remained dissolved organic carbon（DOC）, which benefited subsequent coagulation–flotation. However, preoxidation led to an adverse release of algogenic organic matter（AOM） in the case of MA-rich water. The release of AOM resulted in a poor removal in MA cells and a large amount of THM formation after oxidation-assisted coagulation-flotation process. The reduction in THM formation potential of CR-rich waters is responsible for effective algae and DOC removal by alum coagulation. It is concluded that the species-specific characteristic of cyanobacteria and their AOM released during chlorination significantly influences the performance of coagulation–flotation for AOM removal and corresponding THM formation.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common type of primary liver *** treatment options are available for managing HCC patients,classified roughly as local,local-regional,and systemic *** high postmonotherapy recurrence rate of HCC urges the need for the use of combined modalities to increase tumor control and patient *** international guidelines offer treatment recommendations based on different points of view and classification ***(RT)is a well-known local-regional treatment modality for managing many types of cancers,including ***,only some of these treatment guidelines include RT,and the role of combined modalities is rarely ***,the present study reviewed clinical evidence for the use of different combined modalities in managing HCC,focusing on modern RT's *** RT has an increased utility in managing HCC patients,mainly due to two driving ***,technological advancement(e.g.,stereotactic body radiotherapy and advanced proton-beam therapy)enables precise delivery of radiation to increase tumor control and reduce side effects in the surrounding normal ***,the boom in developing target therapies and checkpoint-blockade immunotherapy prolongs overall survival in HCC patients,re-emphasizing the importance of local tumor ***,RT combines with systemic therapies to generate the systemic therapy augmented by radiotherapy effect,a benefit now being actively investigated.

Esophagectomy for locally advanced esophageal cancer, followed by chemoradiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy

AIM： To compare the efficacy and toxicity of a three-step combination therapy with post-operative radiation alone for locally advanced esophageal cancer.METHODS： Patients with T3-4 and N0-1 esophageal carcinoma from a number of institutions were non-randomly, prospectively enrolled in the study. All patients underwent single-stage curative en bloc esophagectomy. The patients were then assigned into one of two treatment groups based on treatment consisting of either post-operative concurrent chemoradiotherapy （CCRT） with weekly cisplatin 30 mg/m^2 followed by systemic adjuvant chemotherapy （four monthly cycles of cisplatin 20 mg/m^2 and 5-fluorouracil 1 000 mg/m^2 for five consecutive days）, or, post-operative radiation alone. The radiotherapy dose was 55-60 Gy for all patients. Primary end-point of this study was to assess the per-protocol patients＇ improvement of overall survival benefit. Secondary end-point was designed to evaluate both the per-protocol and intent-totreat patients＇ outcome of survival. RESULTS： A total of 60 patients （n=30 per group） were enrolled in this study. The two groups were generally comparable for demographic characteristics and hematological and non-hematological toxicities. The CCRT with weekly cisplatin was well tolerated, with significantly better overall survival （30.9 mo vs 20.7 mo; 95% CI, 27.5-36.4 vs 15.2-26.1） and 3-year survival （70.0% vs 33.7%; P=0.003）. Low histological grade of tumor （P〈0.001） was associated with favorable survival in these locally advanced patients. CONCLUSION： For locally advanced esophageal cancer, the combination of esophagectomy, post-operative CCRT with weekly cisplatin and systemic adjuvant chemotherapy is well tolerated and effective. A large-scale, prospective randomized trial of this regimen is in progress.

Predicting Hurricane Evacuation Decisions with Interpretable Machine Learning Methods

Facing the escalating effects of climate change,it is critical to improve the prediction and understanding of the hurricane evacuation decisions made by households in order to enhance emergency *** studies in this area often have relied on psychology-driven linear models,which frequently exhibited limitations in *** present study proposed a novel interpretable machine learning approach to predict household-level evacuation decisions by leveraging easily accessible demographic and resource-related predictors,compared to existing models that mainly rely on psychological *** enhanced logistic regression model(that is,an interpretable machine learning approach) was developed for accurate predictions by automatically accounting for nonlinearities and interactions(that is,univariate and bivariate threshold effects).Specifically,nonlinearity and interaction detection were enabled by low-depth decision trees,which offer transparent model structure and robustness.A survey dataset collected in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,two of the most intense tropical storms of the last two decades,was employed to test the new *** findings show that,when predicting the households’ evacuation decisions,the enhanced logistic regression model outperformed previous linear models in terms of both model fit and predictive *** outcome suggests that our proposed methodology could provide a new tool and framework for emergency management authorities to improve the prediction of evacuation traffic demands in a timely and accurate manner.

Ghost imaging—its physics and application [Invited]

Since its first experimental demonstration, “ghost imaging” has attracted much attention, perhaps not only because of its interesting physics but also because of its attractive application. This review article discusses the physics and application of ghost imaging:(1) emphasizes the nonlocal two-photon interference nature of ghost imaging, including detailed analysis and calculations;(2) introduces three types of applications with unique advantages of ghost imaging, including a light detection and ranging device with imaging ability, namely, an Imaging Lidar or ILidar system;a turbulence-resistant, or turbulence-free, imaging technology;and a vibration-resistant X-ray microscope of high resolving *** article is prepared for a Special Issue of Chinese Optics Letters, intended for general audiences, especially young researchers and students who are interested in ghost imaging.

Hydrogen and nitrogen absorption properties of Ce-added Zr_(2)(Fe_(1-x)Ni_(x)) alloys

To improve the nitriding resistance of Zr_(2)Fe alloy,the Ce-added Zr_(2)(Fe_(1-x)Ni_(x))(x=0,0.15,0.3,0.5)alloys were prepared by magnetic levitation melting *** effects of Ni substitution for Fe on the phase structure,hydrogen and nitrogen absorption properties of the alloys were investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and p-c isotherm *** experimental results show that Ni substitution can effectively inhibit the formation of both α-Zr and ZrFe_(2) phases and promote the formation of C16 structure Zr_(2)(Fe,Ni)phase,causing Ni-substituted alloys to exhibit low nitrogen absorption rate and *** 623 K under 0.5 MPa nitrogen pressure,the nitrogen absorption capacity of Ce-added Zr_(2)(Fe_(0.5)Ni_(0.5))alloy reaches to 0.8 mL/g,much lower than that of Zr_(2)Fe alloy(1.5 mL/g).Ni substitution decreases the crystal cell volume of the C_(16)Zr_(2)(Fe,Ni)phase,resulting in an increase in the hydrogen absorption equilibrium *** 623 K under 0.05 MPa hydrogen pressure,the hydrogen absorption capacity decreases from 1.46 wt%of Zr_(2)Fe alloy to 1.41 wt%of Ce-added Zr_(2)(Fe_(0.5)Ni_(0.5))alloy.

This paper develops a novel hierarchical control strategy for improving the trajectory tracking capability of aerial robots under parameter *** hierarchical control strategy is composed of an adaptive sliding mode controller and a model-free iterative sliding mode controller(MFISMC).A position controller is designed based on adaptive sliding mode control(SMC)to safely drive the aerial robot and ensure fast state convergence under external ***,the MFISMC acts as an attitude controller to estimate the unmodeled dynamics without detailed knowledge of aerial ***,the adaption laws are derived with the Lyapunov theory to guarantee the asymptotic tracking of the system ***,to demonstrate the performance and robustness of the proposed control strategy,numerical simulations are carried out,which are also compared with other conventional strategies,such as proportional-integralderivative(PID),backstepping(BS),and *** simulation results indicate that the proposed hierarchical control strategy can fulfill zero steady-state error and achieve faster convergence compared with conventional strategies.

Adaptive learning-based optimal tracking control system design and analysis of a disturbed nonlinear hypersonic vehicle model

We propose an adaptive learning-based optimal control scheme for height-velocity control models considering model uncertainties and external disturbances of hypersonic winged-cone *** longitudinal nonlinear model is first established and transformed into the control-oriented error equations,and the control scheme is organized by a steady-compensation *** overcome and eliminate the impact of model uncertainties and external disturbances,an adaptive radial basis function neural network(RBFNN)is designed by a q-gradient *** the height-velocity error system with estimated uncertainties into account,the adaptive learning-based optimal tracking control(ALOTC)scheme is proposed by combining the critic-only adaptive dynamic programming(ADP)framework and parameter optimization of system settling ***,a novel weight update law is proposed to satisfy the online iteration requirements,and the algorithm convergence and closedloop stability are discussed by the Lyapunov ***,four simulation cases are provided to prove the effectiveness,accuracy,and robustness of the proposed scheme for the hypersonic longitudinal control system.
