Soybean(Glycine max)is a high water-demand crop and grown under moderate temperature in *** protect the crop from hot summer and to utilize rainfall for its cultivation,selection of appropriate mulching material(s)is *** optimum production of the crop,soil moisture and temperature regimes as well as water use efficiency(WUE)of the crop were investigated under straw,grass,paper,plastic and bare soil(control)mulching under rain-fed condition at Gifu university farm in *** mulching treatments,compared to the control,lowered soil temperature by 2°C at 5 cm depth and 0.5°C at 15 and 25 cm *** plastic and straw mulching stored the highest quantity of soil moisture at 5 and 15 cm depths;the bare soil stored the lowest *** 25 cm depth,soil-moisture content was the highest under paper mulch but invariable under the other *** mulching reduced evaporation rate from the soil surface and,consequently,the reduced soil-water consumption(SWC)from the root zone augmented WUE of *** paper mulching,by conserving soil-moisture and reducing soil temperature,provided better crop growth attributes,while the plastic mulching improved WUE of green ***,the plastic mulch performed best in reducing soil-water consumption and increasing WUE,while the paper mulch was good for soil-moisture conservation and temperature modification that increased soybean yield.

Multi-modal Gesture Recognition using Integrated Model of Motion, Audio and Video

Gesture recognition is used in many practical applications such as human-robot interaction, medical rehabilitation and sign language. With increasing motion sensor development, multiple data sources have become available, which leads to the rise of multi-modal gesture recognition. Since our previous approach to gesture recognition depends on a unimodal system, it is difficult to classify similar motion patterns. In order to solve this problem, a novel approach which integrates motion, audio and video models is proposed by using dataset captured by Kinect. The proposed system can recognize observed gestures by using three models. Recognition results of three models are integrated by using the proposed framework and the output becomes the final result. The motion and audio models are learned by using Hidden Markov Model. Random Forest which is the video classifier is used to learn the video model. In the experiments to test the performances of the proposed system, the motion and audio models most suitable for gesture recognition are chosen by varying feature vectors and learning methods. Additionally, the unimodal and multi-modal models are compared with respect to recognition accuracy. All the experiments are conducted on dataset provided by the competition organizer of MMGRC, which is a workshop for Multi-Modal Gesture Recognition Challenge. The comparison results show that the multi-modal model composed of three models scores the highest recognition rate. This improvement of recognition accuracy means that the complementary relationship among three models improves the accuracy of gesture recognition. The proposed system provides the application technology to understand human actions of daily life more precisely.

Train control systems ensure the safety of railways. This paper begins with a summary of the typical train control systems in Japan and Europe. Based on this summary, the author then raises the following question regarding current train control systems： What approach should be adopted in order to enhance the functionality, safety, and reliability of train control systems and assist in commercial operations on railways？ Next, the author provides a desirable architecture that is likely to assist with the development of new train control systems based on current information and communication technologies. A new unified train control system （UTCS） is proposed that is effective in enhancing the robustness and com- petitiveness of a train control system. The ultimate architecture of the UTCS will be only composed of essential elements such as point machines and level crossing control devices in the field. Finally, a pro- cessing method of the UTCS is discussed.

Effects of α-mangostin on apoptosis induction of human colon cancer

AIM:To investigate the effect of α-mangostin on the growth and apoptosis induction of human colon cancer ***:The three colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines tested (COLO 205,MIP-101 and SW 620) were treated with α-mangostin to determine the effect on cell proliferation by MTT assay,cell morphology,chromatin condensation,cell cycle analysis,DNA fragmentation,phosphatidylserine exposure and changing of mitochondrial membrane *** molecular mechanisms of α-mangostin mediated apoptosis were further investigated by Western blotting analysis including activation of caspase cascade,cytochrome c release,Bax,Bid,p53 and Bcl-2 modifying ***:The highest inhibitory effect of α-mangostin on cell proliferation of COLO 205,MIP-101 and SW 620 were 9.74 ± 0.85 μg/mL,11.35 ± 1.12 μg/mL and 19.6 ± 1.53 μg/mL,*** study showed that α-mangostin induced apoptotic cell death in COLO 205 cells as indicated by membrane blebbing,chromatin condensation,DNA fragmentation,cell cycle analysis,sub-G1 peak (P < 0.05) and phosphatidylserine *** executioner caspase,caspase-3,the initiator caspase,caspase-8,and caspase-9 were expressed upon treatment with α-*** studies of apoptotic proteins were determined by Western blotting analysis showing increased mitochondrial cytochrome c release,Bax,p53 and Bmf as well as reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (P < 0.05).In addition,up-regulation of tBid and Fas were evident upon treatment with α-mangostin (P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:α-Mangostin may be effective as an anti-cancer agent that induced apoptotic cell death in COLO 205 via a link between extrinsic and intrinsic pathways.

AIM:To investigate the usefulness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration(EUS-FNA) in the differentiation of autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP).METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed 47 of 56 AIP patients who underwent EUS-FNA and met the Asian diagnostic *** 47 EUS-FNA specimens,we evaluated the presence of adequate material and characteristic features of lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis(LPSP) and idiopathic duct-centric pancreatitis(IDCP) mentioned in the International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria and examined if these findings make a contribution to the differential diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 AIP.A disposable 22-gauge needle was used for ***:Adequate specimens including pancreatic tissue for differentiating AIP from cancer were obtained from 43 of 47 patients who underwent ***-FNA was performed from the pancreatic head in 21 cases,which is known to be technically difficult when performed by core biopsy;there was no significant difference in the results compared with pancreatic *** of 47 patients met level 1 findings of LPSP and 5 patients met level 2 findings of *** one met level 1 findings of IDCP,but 3 patients met level 2 findings of *** 10 seronegative cases,2 cases were diagnosed with "definitive type 1 AIP",and 3 cases were diagnosed with "probable type 2 AIP" when considering both the level 2 histological findings and response to ***:EUS-FNA is useful in the differentiation of type 1 and type 2 AIP,particularly in seronegative cases.

Influence of chirality on the cyclohexene-fused C_(60) fullerene derivatives as an accepter partner in a photovoltaic cell

Organic photovoltaic devices(OPVs) using chiral cyclohexene-fused [C_(60)]-fullerene derivatives that have(l)-menthyl ester moiety have been prepared and their properties evaluated as acceptor molecules with P3 HT polymer: racemic cyclohexene-fused [C_(60)] fullenene,(RS)-(1 R,2 S,5 R)-2 a showed higher PCE(2.81%) than that of standard [C_(60)]-PCBM(2.64%) under the same analysis conditions. On the contrary, devices using chiral(R)-(1 R,2 S,5 R)-2 a and(S)-(1 R,2 S,5 R)-2 a, showed PCE as 1.08% and 1.10%, respectively. The main origin of the differences in PCE was found to be their poor Jsc values. The results indicate that the aggregation state might influence the interaction state with P3 HT and impact the results of the OPV properties, Jsc values in particular.

Genome-wide microarray screening for Bombyx mori genes related to transmitting the determination outcome of whether to produce diapause or nondiapause eggs

The bivoltine silkworm Bombyx mori （Lepidoptera： Bombycidae） exhibits a maternally controlled embryonic diapause. Maternal silkworms decide whether to lay diapause or nondiapause eggs depending on environmental factors such as the temperature and photoperiod during the egg and larval stages, and then induce diapause eggs during the pupal stage. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism that conveys the outcome of whether to produce diapause or nondiapause eggs from the egg or larval stages to the pupal stage. This study used microarray analysis to investigate differentially expressed genes in the larval brains of diapause- and nondiapause-egg producers, to which bivoltine silkworms were destined by thermal or photic stimulation during the egg stage. The cytochrome P450 18al and Kriippel homolog i genes were upregulated in producers of diapause eggs compared with those of nondiapause eggs under both experimental conditions. Cytochrome P450 18al encodes a key enzyme for steroid hormone inactivation and Krfippel homolog 1 is an early juvenile hormone-inducible gene that mediates the repression of metamorphosis. The upregulation of these genes during the larval stage might be involved in the signaling pathway that transmits information about the diapause program from the egg stage to the pupal stage in the silkworm.
