Isoflavone Aglycones and Oligopeptides in Lactic Acid-Fermented Soy Milk Differentially Regulate Lipid Metabolism-Related Gene Expression

We previously investigated the physiological effect of an ethanol extract of fermented soymilk on rats and clarified that this extract modulated their hepatic lipid metabolism. Although the soy isoflavones and oligopeptides are representative functional components of the ethanol extract, it remained unclear whether these substances share a role in lipid metabolism modulation. Therefore, we attempted to clarify the effects of isoflavones and oligopeptides in lactic acid-fermented soymilk on lipid metabolism-related gene expression in rats and HepG2 cells. The fermented soymilk extract had a higher isoflavone aglycone content than the soymilk extract. Sevenweek-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an AIN-93G diet, a diet plus 70% soymilk ethanol extract, or a diet plus 70% fermented soymilk ethanol extract for 5 weeks. Although both the soymilk and fermented soymilk ethanol extracts did not significantly affect plasma and hepatic lipid profiles, the expression levels of the genes encoding CYP7a1 and SREBP-2 were significantly upregulated in the livers of rats fed with the fermented soymilk extract. Whereas isoflavone aglycones upregulated CYP7a1-encoding gene expression in HepG2, oligopeptides in soymilk and fermented soymilk downregulated this expression. Oligopeptides in fermented soymilk downregulated the expression stronger than that observed with soymilk. On the other hand, no significant change in FAS expression was observed in the livers of rats fed the fermented soymilk extract. Although isoflavone aglycones did not affect FAS expression in HepG2 cells, oligopeptides in fermented soymilk downregulated FAS expression. The downregulation of FAS with oligopeptides from fermented soymilk was stronger than that from soymilk. In the present animal experiment, the effect on reduction of fat synthesis was not found because of insufficient amount of peptides derived from digestion of soy protein. OFDM System Implementation in DSP Platform TMS320C6678

The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is already used in commercial applications and is capable to deal with Intersymbolic Interference (ISI) caused by multipath channels. This system gained popularity after the application of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and its inverse (IFFT) to modulate the signal in many subcarriers. This paper discusses implementation aspects of an OFDM system;such system is characterized by considering real constraints, including the memory consumption and the processing time. The OFDM modulator, channel samples and OFDM demodulator were implemented entirely in the DSP TMS320C6678 platform. As a proof-of-concept, a 256-QAM OFDM BER performance is compared with theoretical values. Moreover, the memory size is not demanding, consuming very few resources. It was observed a very high number of DSP clock cycles needed for the OFDM signal modulation, corresponding to more than 4 times the number used in demodulating the signal.

Catalyst-free growth of ZnO nanowires on various-oriented sapphire substrates by pulsed-laser deposition

Catalyst-free growth of one-dimensional zinc oxide （ZnO） nanowires is reported. ZnO nanowires were synthesized on ZnO buffer layers deposited on various-oriented sapphire substrates. Syntheses of ZnO buffer layers and nanowires were performed by ultraviolet pulsed-laser deposition. ZnO nanowire＇s number density was the lowest in the case of using m-cut sapphire substrates. ZnO nanowires grown on a-cut sapphire substrates had vertical alignment with distances of tens to hundreds of nanometers. On the other hand, ZnO nanowires grown on c-cut sapphire substrates had the biggest nucleation rate. The dependence of crystalline orientation of ZnO buffer layers on the orientation of sapphire substrates were investigated by electron back scatter diffraction measurement. From their results, the growth models of ZnO buffer layers were suggested and the variations in morphological properties ofZnO nanowires were discussed.

Endoscopic diagnosis of cytomegalovirus gastritis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

AIM:To clarify the endoscopic and clinical findings of cytomegalovirus(CMV) gastritis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(allo-SCT).METHODS:Between 1999 and 2005,523 patients underwent allo-SCT at our hospital,and 115 of these patients with gastrointestinal symptoms underwent ***:CMV gastritis was diagnosed pathologically in seven patients(1.3%) with the other 108 patients serving as *** of the seven patients developed positive CMV antigenemia,and five complained of abdominal *** of abdominal pain preceded CMV antigenemia in four of the f ive *** examination showed oozing(n=2),erosion(n=6),and redness(n=5) in the seven patients with CMV gastritis,while the control patients showed oozing(n=3),erosion(n=24),and redness(n=100).Erosion and oozing were more frequently documented in patients with CMV gastritis compared with the controls,and the differences were statistically significant(P=0.0012 and 0.029,respectively).CMV inclusion bodies were documented in 12 of 14 biopsy specimens obtained from erosive lesions,while they were identif ied in 4 of 15 biopsy specimens obtained from lesions other than erosions(P=0.0025).CONCLUSION:This study suggests that erosion and oozing,as well as abdominal pain,are useful indicators in the diagnosis of CMV gastritis following allo-SCT.

The ageing of the population in Japan has become a problem. According to the research of different regions, where the ratio of the ageing population is above 25%, it is found that the Japanese society is gradually turned to hyper-aged society. The population along Kitakyushu monorail is also in such a situation. This study is based on the background, with excessive reliance on their own vehicles and public transport problems arising from the abolition of public transportation in Kitakyushu as the area of this study. Under the full consideration of people who can’t drive, the elderly who had to take buses as well as people who lack of transport ability where population decrease and the aging problem have been worsening, their surrounding environment should be further improved. In addition, it should be taken into consideration to increase the population in the walking distance around the stations.

Metabolite Profile of Lactic Acid-Fermented Soymilk

Isoflavone aglycone-rich soymilk fermented by Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii, strain TUA-4408L (F4408) has stronger lipid metabolism-modulating effects than isoflavone aglycone-poor soymilk fermented by Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii, strain TUA-4404L (F4404). As such, fermentation products other than isoflavone aglycones may also exert lipid metabolism-modulating effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the metabolites in soymilk (SM), F4404, and F4408 via a metabolomics approach. Various aglycones including isoflavones, flavones, flavonols, and flavanones increased in both F4404 and F4408 compared with SM. The increases in isoflavone and flavanone aglycones were greater in F4408 than in F4404. Some types of dipeptides and free amino acids, especially ornithine, increased in both fermented soymilks. The increase in free amino acids, especially ornithine, was higher in F4408 than in F4404. Thus, F4408 exhibited stronger glycosidase and protease activities than F4404. Functional components produced by lactic acid fermentation are known to improve lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is suggested that not only isoflavone aglycones but also other functional components exert lipid metabolism-modulating effects in fermented soymilks, especially soymilk fermented using TUA-4408L.

Unsteady Flow Condition between Front and Rear Rotor of Contra-Rotating Small Sized Axial Fan

Contra-rotating small-sized axial fans are used as cooling fans for electric equipment. In the case of the contra-rotating rotors, the blade row distance between front and rear rotors is a key parameter for the performance and stable operation. The wake and potential interference occur between the front and rear rotors and leakage flow from the front rotor tip influences on the flow condition of the rear rotor near the shroud when the blade row distance is small. Therefore, it is important to clarify the flow condition between front and rear rotors. The fan static pressure curves were obtained by the experimental apparatus and the numerical analysis was also conducted to investigate the internal flow between front and rear rotors. The leakage flow from the front rotor tip reaches the leading edge of the rear rotor when the blade row distance is small as L = 10 mm and the pressure fluctuations at the leading edge of the rear rotor tip becomes larger than those at other radial positions. In the present paper, the vorticity contour between front and rear rotors is shown and pressure fluctuations related to the leakage flow from the front rotor is investigated using the numerical analysis result. Then, suitable blade row distance for the contra-rotating small sized axial fan is discussed based on the internal flow condition.

Impedance Spectroscopy for Annealing-Induced Change of Molybdenum Oxide in Organic Photovoltaic Cell

Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) have been investigated for a long time, and practical realizations have been also in progress due to their high photovoltaic performance over 12%. In this study, we fabricated normal OPVs and investigated the reason of an improved optical-to-electrical conversion efficiency by annealing the MoOx layer. The photoconversion efficiency was improved up to 5.65% from 2.05% after annealing at 160°C for 5 min, and the external quantum efficiency also increased for all the measurement wavelength ranging from 300 to 900 nm. Especially, the short circuit current density increased among photovoltaic parameters. The carrier transport resistance of photoactive layer was found to be reduced by evaluating the impedance measurement. These results indicate that defects at the MoOx/organic interface were successfully reduced by the thermal annealing process of MoOx layer. The efficient carrier transport was realized for the annealed-device, resulting in the high device performance. In addition, the relaxation and electron recombination times were also reduced by the annealing process, which lead to the improved photovoltaic performance.

System Supporting Automatic Generation of Finite Element Using Image Information

A mesh generating system has been developed in orde r to prepare large amounts of input data which are needed for easy implementation of a finite element analysis. This system consists of a Pre-Mesh Generator, an Automatic Mesh Generator and a Mesh Modifier. Pre-Mesh Generator produces the shape and sub-block information as input data of Automatic Mesh Generator by c arrying out various image processing with respect to the image information of th e drawing input using scanner. Automatic Mesh Generator generates mesh of trian gular elements in the arbitrarily shaped and multiple connected planar domain by using minimum necessary information. This generator has 3 methods of mesh gene ration for each sub-block, A) Regular Mesh Generation, B) Semi-Regular Mesh Ge neration and C) Irregular Mesh Generation. Any of them can be selected automati cally according to the external form of sub-block or the state of domain. Mesh Modifier projects and modifies the pattern of generated mesh by Automatic Mesh Generator as required. This system simplifies the user’s task while saving manp ower in carrying out the finite element analysis.
