Efficacy and Safety Assessment of Antifungal Sequential Therapy from Micafungin to Liposomal Amphotericin B for Antibiotics-Refractory Febrile Neutropenia in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies

Invasive fungal infections are a major challenging problem in the management of febrile neutropenia (FN) in patients with hematologic malignancies. Liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) or micafungin (MCFG) has been widely used as a first-line empirical antifungal therapy for suspected fungal infection in such patients. However, there are several issues in patients receiving these agents: drug related toxicities for L-AmB and breakthrough fungal infections for MCFG. In order to make the best use of these 2 agents, we conducted a prospective study of sequential therapy from MCFG to L-AmB, and evaluated the efficacy and safety of this strategy in FN patients with hematologic malignancies. A total of 18 patients were enrolled, and 11 patients who fulfilled the protocol defined criteria were evaluated. Underlying diseases consisted of acute leukemia (n = 9), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 1), and myelodysplastic syndrome (n = 1). Treatment success was achieved in 8 patients (72.7%). Drug-related adverse events occurred in 8 patients (72.7%). All of those adverse events except one case were below grade 2. Three patients required discontinuation of L-AmB. Although our empirical antifungal sequential therapy seems to be encouraging for antibiotics-refractory FN in patients with hematologic malignancies, further investigation in large-scale studies is warranted.

Shape design of cerium oxide nanoparticles for enhancement of enzyme mimetic activity in therapeutic applications

Cerium oxide nanoparticles （CONPs）, widely used in catalytic applications owing to their robust redox reaction, are now being considered in therapeutic applications based on their enzyme mimetic properties such as catalase and super oxide dismutase （SOD） mimetic activities. In therapeutic applications, the emerging demand for CONPs with low cytotoxicity, high cost efficiency, and high enzyme mimetic capability necessitates the exploration of alternative synthesis and effective material design. This study presents a room temperature aqueous synthesis for low-cost production of shape-selective CONPs without potentially harmful organic substances, and additionally, investigates cell viability and catalase and SOD mimetic activities. This synthesis, at room temperature, produced CONPs with particular planes： {111}/{100} nanopolyhedra, {100} nano/submicron cubes, and {111}/{100} nanorods that grew in [110] longitudinal direction. Enzymatic activity assays indicated that nanopolyhedra with a high concentration of Ce4＋ ions promoted catalase mimetic activity, while nanocubes and nanorods with high Ce3＋ ion concentrations enhanced SOD mimetic activity. This is the first study indicating that shape and facet configuration design of CONPs, coupled with the retention of dominant, specific Ce valence states, potentiates enzyme mimetic activities. These findings may be utilized for CONP design aimed at enhancing enzyme mimetic activities in therapeutic applications.

Bridging long gap peripheral nerve injury using skeletal muscle-derived multipotent stem cells

Long gap peripheral nerve injuries usually reulting in life-changing problems for patients. Skeletal muscle derived-multipotent stem cells （Sk-MSCs） can differentiate into Schwann and perineurial/endoneurial cells, vascular relating pericytes, and endothelial and smooth muscle cells in the damaged peripheral nerve niche. Application of the Sk-MSCs in the bridging conduit for repairing long nerve gap injury resulted favorable axonal regeneration, which showing superior effects than gold standard therapy--healthy nerve autograft. This means that it does not need to sacrifice of healthy nerves or loss of related functions for repairing peripheral nerve injury.

Degradation behaviors of nonylphenol ethoxylates by isolated bacteria using improved isolation method

Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO)-degrading bacteria were isolated from activated sludge using an improved isolation method, and the corresponding degradation behaviours were investigated. Eight NPEO-degrading strains distributed in genera Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, Achromobacter, and Staphylococcus were acquired. An overview of a long-gap peripheral nerve therapy： A long- gap peripheral nerve transection injury is an irreparable injury to the living body, and mostly leads to permanent loss of re- lated motor and sensory functions. In such long gap injuries, nerve end-to-end suture is physically impossible. Therefore, bridging a long nerve-gap is critical to re-establish adequate mechanical support for separated nerve ends, and prevent the diffusion of neurotrophic and neurotropic factors secreted by transected stumps （Deumens et al., 2010）.

Environmental pressure rather than ongoing hybridization is responsible for an altitudinal cline in the morphologies of two oaks

Aims In a contact zone between related taxa,phenotypic variation can result from genetic and/or environmental *** study aimed to clarify the cause of phenotypic variation in leaf morphology of two Quercus crispula varieties—crispula(QCC)and mongolicoides(QCM)—in their contact zone along an altitudinal *** We measured 6 morphological traits of leaves and recorded genotypes of 13 nuclear microsatellite loci for 48 individuals in the contact zone and 24 individuals in each of the reference populations of QCC and *** constructed a model explaining the phenotypic variation(leaf morphology)in relation to environmental(altitude)and genetic(ancestry from the reference population)*** Findings Both morphological and genetic markers distinguished the two varieties in the reference populations *** were able to confirm the power of both morphological and genetic *** within the contact zone population had intermediate ancestry that was slightly biased to QCM ancestry,and the distribution of their morphologies overlapped with those of the two varieties in the reference *** effect of altitude on leaf morphological traits was significant,while that of ancestry was *** of ancestry and interclass heterozygosity in the contact zone population resembled those in F2 or later generation *** results indicate that in the contact zone between QCC and QCM,there is no ongoing hybridization,but environmental pressure has created an altitudinal gradient in morphological traits through phenotypic plasticity and/or variation in functional genes.

Influence of volute distortion on the performance of turbocharger centrifugal compressor with vane diffuser

As the geometry of the volute of turbocharger compressor is non-axisymmetric,it causes a distortion at the outlet of the diffuser and influences the upstream components.A distortion model in which a pressure distortion was applied as outlet boundary condition was established to simulate the distortion induced by the *** turned out to be sufficient to impose a circumferentially asymmetric pressure distribution at the outlet of the diffuser to replace the *** on the distortion model which was verified,the influence of the amplitude of the distortion on the performance of centrifugal compressor was studied in *** results show that the distortion severely harms aerodynamic stability of the investigated *** larger the amplitude of the distortion,the worse the performance of the *** distortion induced by asymmetric volute propagates to upstream components and causes local flow separation at part of diffuser and impeller,and then causes the compressor *** the amplitude of the volute distortion is 10%,the stable flow range of the centrifugal compressor decreases to near *** authors’knowledge,the relationship between the compressor performance and distortion amplitude is first obtained quantitatively,which provides evidence to improve the performance of turbocharger compressor by decreasing the distortion induced by asymmetric volute.

The effectiveness of hepatitis C treatment has improved with the development of interferon(IFN),and it has drastically improved with the development of peg-interferon-α(PEG-IFN) in combination with ribavirin(RBV) and,more recently,with the addition of a protease ***,which is a secondgeneration protease inhibitor,has shown clinically favorable safety and tolerability *** received its first global approval in Japan in September 2013 for the treatment of genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C in combination with PEG-IFN and *** serious adverse event associated with IFN therapy is interstitialpneumonitis,which can be *** experienced a patient with interstitial pneumonitis that was induced by simeprevir with PEG-IFN and RBV therapy for chronic hepatitis C in the early stages of therapy(8 wk after initiating therapy).This is the first case report of interstitial pneumonitis with simeprevir with PEG-IFN and RBV in the *** addition,it is very interesting that the onset of interstitial pneumonitis was earlier than that in conventional PEG-IFN and RBV *** finding suggests that simeprevir augments the adverse *** present this case report in light of relevant literature on interstitial pneumonitis with conventional PEG-IFN and RBV therapy.

The Most Complete Pistosauroid Skeleton from the Triassic of Yunnan,China

A new specimen discovered from the Falang Formation in northeastern Yunnan represents the most complete skeleton of Triassic pistosauroids. The new specimen is referred to Yunguisaurus Cheng et al., 2006 on the basis of the skull features, such as the presence of a separated nasal entering the external naris, a large pineal foramen located at the frontal/parietal suture and an interpterygoid vacuity with a narrow anterior extension. The new specimen differs from the type species of Yunguisaurus liae Cheng et al., 2006 in some aspects. Most of these differences can be attributed to ontogenetic variations. The new specimen is provisionally considered as Yunguisaurus cf. liae although its relatively short snout of the skull and slenderer hyoid may not be explained ontogenetically. Whether or not the new specimen represents a different taxon has to wait for a detailed study of the whole skeleton.

Effect of bent inlet pipe on the flow instability behavior of centrifugal compressors

Bent inlet pipes are often used in centrifugal compressors due to limited installation space,and an understanding of the effect on compressor stability is essential for safety and *** paper firstly investigates flow instability behaviors in two compressors,one with a straight inlet pipe and the other with an S-shaped bent *** detail,it analyzes the resulting flow fields,instability evolution paths and surge *** results show that the S-shaped pipe obviously affects the flow field at high mass flow rates,while reverse flow mainly influences the flow field at low mass flow *** flow first occurs at certain flow passages with a high pressure difference that is predominantly decided by the volute rather than the S-shaped bent *** addition,centrifugal compressors can tolerate reverse flow to some extent so that surge would not occur immediately if reverse flow occurs unless the reverse flow region extends circumferentially and radially to a sufficiently large *** the S-shaped pipe is not dominant in the creation and extension of reverse flow,it does not exacerbate the stability of the central compressor to a great *** but not least,the S-shaped pipe is noted to delay the occurrence of surge at 90%rotating speed,which suggests the possibility of improving compressor stability with bent inlet *** result differs from the conventional understanding that inlet distortion usually deteriorates compressor stability and emphasizes the particularity of centrifugal compressors.
