String kernels are popular tools for analyzing protein sequence data and they have been successfully applied to many computational biology problems. The traditional string kernels assume that different substrings are independent. However, substrings can be highly correlated due to their substructure relationship or common physico-chemical properties. This paper proposes two kinds of weighted spectrum kernels： The correlation spectrum kernel and the AA spectrum kernel. We evMuate their performances by predicting glycan-binding proteins of 12 glycans. The results show that the correlation spectrum kernel and the AA spectrum kernel perform significantly better than the spectrum kernel for nearly all the 12 glycans. By comparing the predictive power of AA spectrum kernels constructed by different physico-chemical properties, the authors can also identify the physico- chemical properties which contributes the most to the glycan-protein binding. The results indicate that physico-chemical properties of amino acids in proteins play an important role in the mechanism of glycamprotein binding.

Thirty years have passed since the first report of portal vein embolization(PVE),and this procedure is widely adopted as a preoperative treatment procedure for patients with a small future liver remnant(FLR).PVE has been shown to be useful in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and chronic liver ***,special caution is needed when PVE is applied prior to subsequent major hepatic resection in cases with cirrhotic livers,and volumetric analysis of the liver segments in addition to evaluation of the liver functional reserve before PVE is mandatory in such *** in the embolic material and selection of the treatment approach,and combined use of PVE and transcatheter arterial embolization/chemoembolization have yielded improved outcomes after PVE and major hepatic resections.A novel procedure termed the associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy has been gaining attention because of the rapid hypertrophy of the FLR observed in patients undergoing this procedure,however,application of this technique in HCC patients requires special caution,as it has been shown to be associated with a high morbidity and mortality even in cases with essentially healthy livers.

Utilizing lightweight Al alloys in various industrial applications requires achieving precise pressure tightness and leak *** pressure impregnation(VPI)with thermosetting polymers is commonly used to address leakage defects in die-cast Al *** this study,the efficacy of the VPI technique in sealing alloy parts was investigated using a combination of nondestructive micro X-ray computed tomography(micro XCT)and a standard leak *** results demonstrate that the commonly used water leak test is insufficient for determining the sealing ***,micro XCT shows distinct advantages by enabling more comprehensive *** reveals the presence of a low atomic number impregnates sealant within casting defects,which has low grey contrast and allows for visualizing primary leakage paths in *** effective atomic number of impregnated resin is 6.75 and that of Al alloy is 13.69 by dual-energy X-ray *** research findings will contribute to enhancing the standard VPI process parameters and the properties of impregnating sealants to improve quality assurance for impregnation in industrial metals.

Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding(LGIB) is a common indication for hospital admission. Patients with LGIB often experience persistent or recurrent bleeding and require blood transfusions and interventions, such as colonoscopic,radiological, and surgical treatments. Appropriate decision-making is needed to initially manage acute LGIB, including emergency hospitalization, timing of colonoscopy, and medication use. In this literature review, we summarize the evidence for initial management of acute LGIB. Assessing various clinical factors,including comorbidities, medication use, presenting symptoms, vital signs, and laboratory data is useful for risk stratification of severe LGIB, and for discriminating upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Early timing of colonoscopy had the possibility of improving identification of the bleeding source, and the rate of endoscopic intervention, compared with elective colonoscopy. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography before colonoscopy may help identify stigmata of recent hemorrhage on colonoscopy, particularly in patients who can be examined immediately after the last hematochezia. How to deal with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs) and antithrombotic agents after hemostasis should be carefully considered because of the risk of rebleeding and thromboembolic events. In general, aspirin as primary prophylaxis for cardiovascular events and NSAIDs were suggested to be discontinued after LGIB. Managing acute LGIB based on this information would improve clinical outcomes. Further investigations are needed to distinguish patients with LGIB who require early colonoscopy and hemostatic intervention.

A Study of the Impulse Wave Discharged from the Exits of Two Parallel Tubes

The twin impulse wave leads to very complicated flow fields, such as Mach stem, spherical waves, and vortex ring. The twin impulse wave discharged from the exits of the two tubes placed in parallel is investigated to understand the detailed flow physics associated with the twin impulse wave, compared with those in a single impulse wave. In the current study, the merging phenomena and propagation characteristics of the impulse waves are investigated using a shock tube experiment and by numerical computations. The Harten-Yee''s total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to solve the unsteady two-dimensional compressible Euler equations. The Mach number Ms of incident shock wave is changed below 1.5 and the distance between two-parallel tubes, L/d, is changed from 1.2 to 4.0. In the shock tube experiment, the twin impulse waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system for the purpose of validation of computational work. The results obtained show that on the symmetric axis between two-parallel tubes, the peak pressure produced by the twin impulse waves and its location strongly depend upon the distance between two-parallel tubes, L/d and the incident shock Mach number, Ms. The predicted Schlieren images represent the measured twin-impulse wave with a good accuracy.

A ’H NMR signal shifted drastically to down field (δ - 10.0) at the bay area and in dose proximity to C = O group for H-1 was observed through complete assignments of 1H NMR spectra for pyridino- and benzobenzanthrones. It is concluded that this phenomenon is due not only to the anisotropy effect of C=O plus aromatic ring current effect, but also to the electrostatic attraction of C-H (δ+)…O(δ-)=C interaction. The evidence for the sp2C-H…O = C intramolecular interaction similar to hydrogen bond has also been given by EI-MS and MS/MS (CID) spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy, as well as MNDO-PM3 calculations. This new kind of interaction might be called ’quasi-hydrogen bond’.

Many studies demonstrate that conventional anticancer drugs elevate intracellular level of reactive oxygen species （ROS） and alter redox-homeostasis of cancer cells. It is widely accepted that anticancer effect of these chemotherapeutics is due to induction of oxidative stress and ROS-mediated apoptosis in cancer. On the other hand, the harmful side effects of conventional anticancer chemotherapy are also due to increased production of ROS and disruption of redox-homeostasis of normal cells and tissues. This article describes the mechanisms for triggering and modulation of apoptosis through ROS-dependent and ROS^independent pathways. We try to answer the question：＂Is it possible to induce highly specific apoptosis only in cancer cells, without overproduction of ROS, as well as without harmful effects on normal cells and tissues？＂ The review also suggests a new therapeutic strategy for selective killing of cancer cells, without significant impact on viability of normal cells and tissues, by combining anticancer drugs with redox-modulators, affecting specific signaling pathways and avoiding oxidative stress.

Radiofrequeut magnetron sputtering technique was used to produce calcium phosphate coated on the titurdum substrates, and the sputtered coating films were crystallized in an autoclave at 110℃ using a low temperature hydrothermal technique. The crystallization of as-sputtered coating film on the titanium substrates were amorphous calcium phosphate film. However, after the hydrothermal technique, calcium phosphate crystals grew and these were cohumnar crystal. The Ca/P ratio of sputtered coating films in 1.6 to 2.0.

Influence of contamination on banded iron formations in the Isua supracrustal belt, West Greenland: Reevaluation of the Eoarchean seawater compositions

Banded Iron Formations（BIFs） are chemical sediments, ubiquitously distributed in the Precambrian supracrustal belts; thus their trace element compositions are helpful for deciphering geochemical evolution on the Earth through time. However, it is necessary to elucidate factors controlling the whole-rock compositions in order to decode the ancient seawater compositions because their compositions are highly variable. We analyzed major and trace element contents of the BIFs in the 3.8-3.7 Ga Isua supracrustal belt（ISB）, southern West Greenland. The BIFs are petrographically classified into four types：Black-,Gray-, Green-and White-types, respectively. The Green-type BIFs contain more amphiboles, and are significantly enriched in Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, heavy rare earth element（HREE） and U contents. However,their bulk compositions are not suitable for estimate of seawater composition because the enrichment was caused by secondary mobility of metamorphic Mg, Ca and Si-rich fluid, involvement of carbonate minerals and silicate minerals of olivine and pyroxene and/or later silicification or contamination of volcanic and clastic materials. The White-type BIFs are predominant in quartz, and have lower transition element and REE contents. The Gray-type BIFs contain both quartz and magnetite. The Black-type BIFs are dominated by magnetite, and contain moderate to high transition element and REE contents. But,positive correlations of V, Ni, Zn and U contents with Zr contents suggest that involvement of detrital,volcanic and exhalative materials influences on their contents. The evidence for significant influence of the materials on the transition element contents such as Ni in the BIFs indicates the transition element contents in the Archean ocean were much lower than previously estimated. We reconstructed secular variations of V,Co, Zn and U contents of BIFs through time, which show Ni and Co contents decreased whereas V, Zn and U contents increased through time. Especially, the Ni
