Precise measurement of gold nanorods by using depolarized dynamic light scattering apparatus

A precise and noninvasive method for the size and shape measurement of gold nanorods(GNRs) has been proposed based on depolarized dynamic light scattering(DDLS). A home-made DDLS apparatus has been established. By applying depolarized optical path with precise alignment method, the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of this apparatus is highly improved. GNRs with three different diameter and length has been precisely measured by using DDLS method as well as scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The thickness of adsorption layer of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) in solution has been taken into consideration. Results show that size measurement of GNRs by using DDLS method agrees very well with that by using SEM. In addition, it is shown that the extinction spectroscopy strongly limited the application of DDLS method by affecting the effective scattering light intensity. Proper laser wavelength should be chosen before the application of this method.

The Arctic is rapidly transforming into a navigable ocean because of global *** retreat of ice extent and widened marginal ice zone(MIZ)in the Arctic made it possible for non-icebreaking commercial vessels to sail into Arctic waters where ice floes of various concentrations and thicknesses *** main objective of this work is to estimate the performance of a non-icebreaking cargo ship that sails in the Arctic marginal ice *** numerical approaches are utilized to calculate ice-induced resistance and compared with those proposed in empirical *** comparison shows that the resistances predicted by the two numerical tools differ obviously and are in general smaller in comparison with the ones calculated from the empirical formulas under lower ice *** total resistances are further calculated to predict the required propulsion powers for the case study vessel to enable navigation under severe ice *** work highlights the significance of developing new and more sophisticated tools for estimation of ship’s ice performance in MIZ,which is the prerequisite to enable non-icebreaking cargo fleet to utilize the Arctic shipping lane.

Large eddy simulation （LES） of low Mach num- ber compressible turbulent channel flow with spanwise wall oscillation （SWO） is carried out. The flow field is analyzed with emphases laid on the heat transport as well as its rela- tion with momentum transport. When turbulent coherent structures are suppressed by SWO, the turbulent transports are significantly changed, however the momentum and heat transports change in the same manner, which gives the evi- dence of inherently consistent transport mechanisms between momentum and heat in turbulent boundary layers. The Reynolds analogies of all the flow cases are quite good, which confirms again the fact that the transport mechanisms of momentum and heat are consistent, which gives theoreti- cal support for controlling the wall heat flux control by using the drag reducing techniques.

A simplified three-dimensional numerical model was presented to simulate the micro-crack nucleation and growth to some predefined dimension(approximately 0.38 mm) on the throat surface of a Ni-base powder metallurgy(PM) *** numerical simulation of micro-crack initiation was based on the Tanaka-Mura micro-crack initiation models,where individual grains of the mesoscopic model were simulated using the Voronoi *** improvements were made in the model.(1) Considering crack initiation along with 12 principal slip systems on octahedral slip planes of face centered cubic(FCC) crystal in three-dimensional(3-D) models.(2) Considering the effect of secondary phase precipitate due to impinging slip and dislocation pileup.(3) The Tanaka-Mura theory of fatigue-crack-initiation from notches was applied to simulate the crack initiation from another crack tip.(4) The coalescence of random initiated micro-cracks was simulated once they intersected with each other and a macro-crack was finally *** calculated results were in good agreement with the experimental data which verified the rationality of the simulation *** applicability of the proposed model for treating fatigue-crack-initiation life in engineering structures was preliminarily achieved.

The stoichiometric LaCoO_(3) and nonstoichiometric LaCo_(1.2)O_(3) perovskite catalysts were prepared by citric acid sol-gel method,and then,LaCoO_(3) perovskite was etched with nitric *** structure,surface composition and reducibility of the catalyst were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD),nitrogen desorption,transmission electron microscope(TEM),temperature program reduction of H_(2)(H_(2)-TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).It was found that nitric acid etching did not change the crystal structure and the overall morphology of the LaCoO_(3) catalyst,but it can cause the exposure of B-site Co metal to the surface of the *** a result,after acid etching,the reducibility of the LaCoO_(3) catalyst was improved,leading to the improvement in the catalytic activity of the LaCoO_(3) catalyst for CO oxidation and C_(3)H_(8) ***,the catalytic activity of the LaCoO_(3) catalyst after acid etching was higher than that of LaCo_(1.2)O_(3) and CoOx/LaCoO_(3) catalyst.

BACKGROUND： von Willebrand factor （vWF） is only released from endothelial cells and platelets and is an in vivo and in vitro marker of endothelial injury in septic patients with acute lung injury （ALI）. Interleukin-8 （IL-8）, as a proinflammatory mediator causing recruitment of inflammatory cells, induces an increase in oxidant stress mediators and makes it as a key parameter for localized inflammation. However, it has not been well established whether the level of serum IL-8 is associated with the severity of lung injury and whether it is a prognosis marker for severe lung contusion. This study was to investigate the expression of plasma vWF and IL-8 and their association with the severity and outcomes of severe pulmonary ***： A total of 63 patients were divided into a severe pulmonary contusion with acute respiratory distress syndrome （ARDS） group and a non-ARDS group, or a survivor group and a non- survivor group, or an injury severity score （ISS）〈20 group and an ISS 〉20 group. Another 20 healthy volunteers served as controls. The levels of plasma vWF and serum IL-8 were measured by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） at 1,3, 5 and 7 days after injury. The expression patterns of the plasma vWF and serum IL-8 were compared between different groups. RESULTS： The concentrations of plasma vWF and serum IL-8 were significantly increased in all severe pulmonary contusion patients at all time points in comparison with the control group. The concentrations of plasma vWF in patients with ARDS increased during the whole study period, but vWF in patients with non-ARDS increased gradually until day 5 and then decreased at day 7. The concentration of serum IL-8 showed a similar expression pattern in both groups, but the expression increased more significantly in the ARDS group than in the non-ARDS group.
